The result is encouraging for textile-reinforced cement composites, but it is not a field-tested product specification or proof of long-term building durability.
What did the researchers make?
Payam Sadrolodabaee, Josep Claramunt, Mònica Ardanuy and Albert de la Fuente studied a Portland-cement matrix modified with silica fume and reinforced with recycled textile-waste nonwoven fabric. Rather than stirring chopped cloth into ordinary ready-mix concrete, they impregnated fabric layers with cement paste and assembled them as laminate plates.
The team first characterized cement paste with silica-fume contents from 0% to 30%. For the composite specimens, they used six fabric layers and compared pastes containing 0%, 15% or 30% silica fume. The journal study also examined mechanical response and accelerated durability exposures, including wet/dry and freeze/thaw cycles. The 2023 journal article record describes the study and its tested formulations.
How did silica fume affect the aged composite?
The journal article highlights the laminate made with 30% silica fume as performing satisfactorily in both unaged and aged conditions. For those tested samples, the publisher record reports flexural strength of 14.5–15.5 MPa and flexural toughness of 8.0–8.7 kJ/m² across the unaged and aged conditions. These are laboratory results for that formulation, not guaranteed values for other mixes, fabrics or construction applications.

A related 2022 fib PhD Symposium paper looked specifically at the hybrid textile-waste/flax nonwoven composite with 30% silica fume under accelerated wet/dry aging. Its abstract reports that unaged mechanical properties differed negligibly from the no-silica-fume laminate; after aging, the treated composite had 40% better post-cracking mechanical parameters than the comparison without silica fume. That 40% figure belongs to the symposium paper and its comparison—not to the journal article’s flexural-strength or toughness ranges. The University of Birmingham record for the symposium paper provides that account.
What do these results mean for construction?
The findings suggest that silica fume may help this particular layered textile-cement composite preserve mechanical performance through the accelerated exposures tested. They do not establish how the material would perform over decades outdoors, under building loads, or in a particular building component. Accelerated aging is useful for comparing specimens under controlled conditions, but it does not replace long-term field monitoring or a validated construction specification.

- Promising: the 30% silica-fume laminate showed reported flexural strength and toughness ranges in aged as well as unaged conditions.
- Not established: a verified service life, field performance, code approval, or a ready-to-use recipe for a structural application.
- Environmental impact: the reviewed records provide no life-cycle assessment or verified carbon-saving percentage, so recycled inputs alone do not demonstrate a measured environmental benefit.
How should the 2022 and 2023 publications be distinguished?
The journal article appeared in Cement and Concrete Composites, volume 135, as article 104829, with a January 2023 issue date. A related symposium paper appeared in 2022 and reports the separate 40% post-cracking comparison after wet/dry aging. The DOI’s 2022 date does not make the journal issue a 2022 publication. The University of Birmingham record for the journal article identifies the publication.
