Construction was expected to start in 2016, but a January bushfire significantly damaged the camp and delayed the project. Forest Edge is again taking camp enquiries, but its current website does not establish whether the ski facility was ever built or opened.
What the 2015 proposal included
The PerthNow report published on 25 November 2015 described a proposed facility of up to 3,500 square metres, with five planned areas:
- A main slope
- A freestyle area
- A snow tube area
- A toboggan area
- A training slope
The proposed surface was Proslope, described as synthetic-fibre bristles over mats, with a fine mist intended to make it slippery. This was the design described at the time, not confirmation of equipment installed at Forest Edge. Camp owner Graeme Watson told PerthNow that “nothing would ever be the same as skiing but the dry ski slope was the next best thing.” PerthNow’s 2015 report presented the facility as an alternative to snow skiing, not a snow-covered slope or indoor ski dome.
Why the proposed construction was delayed
A bushfire in January 2016 significantly damaged Forest Edge Recreation Camp. A regional development account and the Shire of Waroona’s February 2016 newsletter described the damage and the disruption to the ski project; the Shire newsletter reported the slope as planned for completion in 2016, not as completed. The regional development account says construction timelines were pushed back.

#1 Best Overall
- Ideal for out-of-season ski and snowboard practice, Easy to install and disassemble / Popular Enoki mushroom dry ski mat (the same style used in the FIS World Cup)
- The dry ski mat emits a sound similar to the "sizzling" noise heard on real snow; pay attention to the changes in sound as they reflect the force of your movements and your technical progress.
- The longest side is 200cm, which is longer than the length of the snowboard. There is extra space for practicing more difficult technical moves, giving you both fitness and the fun of skiing.
- All the skiing techniques you practice at zero degrees can be performed on our mat, the most realistic artificial ski surface.
In a 2016 Peel regional publication, Graeme Watson said the project remained a hope, but that the loss of camp infrastructure could affect the family’s ability to fund it. Sonia Watson described the owners’ recovery goals: reopening the camp in January 2017 and the dry-sports facility the following year. Those were targets stated in 2016, not evidence that either milestone was achieved. The 2016 Peel publication records the hopes and recovery challenge after the fire.

The available current information does not resolve the ski facility’s final status. Forest Edge’s website promotes camps and accommodation and accepts booking enquiries, but its current pages do not establish that Dry Snowsports WA was built or opened. The original approval and later recovery plans are not proof of a completed venue.
Rank #2
Forest Edge lists its address as 133 Weller Road, Waroona WA 6215, about 90 minutes south of Perth and five kilometres east of Waroona. Its enquiry page says limited 2026 camp packages remain and it is taking bookings for 2027 and 2028. The camp describes school programs for years 5–12 and bunkroom accommodation for up to 140 guests on its camp and accommodation pages. These details concern the camp, not the dry slope.

What can be said with confidence
- Waroona Shire Council approved a proposed dry ski facility at Forest Edge in 2015, promoted as WA’s first artificial ski slope.
- The proposal described a 3,500-square-metre site and five activity areas; the size and features were plans, not verified measurements of a completed facility.
- The January 2016 bushfire damaged the camp and delayed the project.
- Later owner statements described the facility as a hope and set recovery targets, but do not confirm construction or opening.
- Forest Edge currently takes camp enquiries; its current public pages do not say whether the ski project proceeded.
