Bunbury’s Parade Hotel Damaged in Severe WA Storm on 1–2 June 2024

A severe storm damaged the Parade Hotel’s roof while people were inside on 1–2 June 2024. The tornado assessment remained unresolved, while DFES later recorded 221 properties affected by the storm.

A severe storm damaged the Parade Hotel’s roof while people were inside the Bunbury pub on the night of 1–2 June 2024. The storm also damaged homes and other properties across the South West. The June event was not confirmed as a tornado, and it was separate from the tornado that struck Bunbury on 10 May 2024.

What happened at the Parade Hotel?

As strong winds and heavy rain crossed Western Australia’s west coast, the Parade Hotel’s roof was damaged at about 10pm, according to DFES South West Superintendent Andy Wright in PerthNow’s report. Patrons were inside. ABC News reported that ten people were at the venue and that two women were taken to hospital. PerthNow reported three people were admitted with minor injuries, so the contemporaneous reports do not agree on the number hospitalized.

ABC News quoted Bunbury fire station spokesman Daryn Rowland saying, “Our main concern was the people inside … luckily they have all escaped with a few minor injuries.” Patron Makayla Dunn told the broadcaster, “The roof collapsed on us,” and said she and her mother crawled out after moving roofing debris that blocked the door.

Was the June storm a tornado?

The June event should be described as a severe storm, not a confirmed tornado. At the time, Wright told PerthNow that DFES was working with the Bureau of Meteorology and needed to gather evidence before assessing the event. In a 5 June follow-up, ABC News reported that the Bureau had been unable to determine whether it was a tornado.

This was distinct from the separate Bunbury tornado and storm of 10 May 2024. The two events should not be conflated when describing the damage or the official totals.

How widespread was the damage?

Early response figures and later assessed totals describe different stages of the emergency. Wright told PerthNow that crews were called to other incidents involving “significant damage to approximately 12 homes” and that three roofs were believed to have been fully removed. That was an early account, not a final property tally.

In its later recovery summary, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), Western Australia, recorded 221 properties affected by the 1–2 June storm across East Bunbury (Koombana Bay), Glen Iris and Picton. DFES said the May and June 2024 storms together damaged more than 440 residential and non-residential properties, displaced residents and disrupted local businesses.

The storm brought strong winds and heavy rain, caused power outages and prompted weather warnings as a cold front crossed the west coast. ABC News reported that outages peaked at more than 8,000 properties in southern WA during the response. That was an early reported peak on 2 June 2024, not a final or current outage count. The same report noted a 91 km/h gust at Cape Leeuwin; that regional observation was not a measurement at the Parade Hotel.

What is known about the hotel now?

The contemporary reports described the hotel as closed after the damage, but those reports do not establish whether it has since reopened or what its present-day operating status is. They also do not establish a later change of ownership or use. The reports document the immediate storm damage, not the hotel’s status today.
