A 200-gallon deck box is designed for bulky outdoor items such as patio cushions, pool supplies, toys, towels, gardening equipment, grilling accessories, folded chairs and chaise-lounge pads. It can also hold a combination of those items when their stored dimensions work together.
“200 gallons” is a capacity label, not a promise that every box has the same usable shape. The interior width, depth, height, lid opening and the way each item must be oriented determine what actually fits. Measure your belongings and compare those measurements with the model’s internal dimensions before you buy or load it.

The short answer: what a 200-gallon deck box can hold
Manufacturers position 200-gallon boxes for large, soft and irregular outdoor gear rather than small household storage. Common contents include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Patio and deep-seating cushions
- Chaise-lounge pads
- Most folded outdoor chairs when placed flat
- Pool toys, swim gear, pool-maintenance supplies and beach towels
- Garden supplies and yard accessories
- Grilling equipment and related patio accessories
- Pillows, towels and other seasonal soft goods
You may be able to combine several categories, but no reliable universal answer exists for “how many cushions” or “how many towels.” Cushion thickness, chair frames, packaging, internal bracing and the box’s exact shape change the result. Treat the gallon figure as a broad size class and the interior measurements as the real capacity test.

Why the 200-gallon label is not enough
Manufacturers use the same capacity class for different shapes
Two products marketed as 200-gallon boxes can have noticeably different proportions. One may be wider and taller, while another is deeper. That difference controls whether a long chaise pad lies flat, whether a folded chair can pass through the opening, and how efficiently cushions stack.
Keter’s sizing guidance makes the key point: “What really matters is the internal space—the dimensions inside the box that determine what actually fits.” The statement is especially important for long, rigid or unusually thick items that cannot be compressed.
Usable volume is less than a simple geometric calculation
Interior walls may taper, a lid can occupy clearance near the top, and hinges or gas struts can intrude into the opening. Soft items also leave air gaps when stacked. A box’s published gallon rating therefore should not be treated as a measured promise of perfectly packable liquid volume.
Opening size matters as much as interior size
An item can be shorter than the interior but still fail to enter through the lid opening if it cannot be angled into place. Check the opening and lid clearance for folded chairs, rigid pool equipment and thick cushion bundles. A large interior does not help if the largest item cannot get through the top.
Published interior dimensions from two 200-gallon examples
Use model-specific interior dimensions when estimating fit. The following manufacturer specifications illustrate why the capacity label alone cannot settle the question.
| Example model | Interior width | Interior depth | Interior height | What the specification shows |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keter Denali 200 Gallon Deck Box | 56.2 in | 25 in | 33.18 in | Wider and taller, but shallower than the Suncast example |
| Suncast BMDB200ZP Peppercorn 200 Gallon Deck Box | 54 in | 27.5 in | 30 in | Deeper, but narrower and lower than the Keter example |
These are model specifications, not universal dimensions for every 200-gallon deck box. They also are interior measurements; exterior width and depth should not be substituted when checking whether your belongings fit.
What normally fits
Patio and deep-seating cushions
Large seat, back and deep-seating cushions are the primary use case for this size class. Store them on their broadest face when possible, and note the thickest point rather than measuring only a compressed edge. A cushion that fits by width may still consume too much height when several are stacked.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Before loading, group cushions by the way they will actually be stored. If a back cushion must stand on edge to fit, measure its full height and thickness in that orientation. If it must lie flat, compare its longest and widest faces with the box’s interior width and depth.
Chaise-lounge pads
Keter describes a 200-gallon box as suitable for chaise-lounge pads, subject to checking the exact interior measurements. These pads are often longer than standard seat cushions, so length and lid opening are the critical checks. Measure the pad folded or rolled only if the manufacturer permits that storage method; do not bend a pad around hinges or force it under the lid.
Folded outdoor chairs
Most folded chairs can fit when laid flat, according to Keter’s sizing guide, but “most” is not a dimensional guarantee. Include the folded chair’s longest dimension, frame thickness, armrests and any protruding feet. Stack chairs so their frames do not create a high point that prevents the lid from closing.
Pool supplies, toys and towels
Pool noodles, flotation toys, goggles, swim gear, maintenance accessories and beach towels are typical contents. Soft towels and small gear can fill gaps around larger cushions, while rigid toys should be checked for their longest dimension and for snagging points. Keep wet items out until they are dry; a sealed box can trap moisture.
Gardening and yard accessories
Suncast identifies garden supplies and yard accessories as appropriate deck-box contents. Examples include hand tools, kneeling pads, gloves, empty planters and hose accessories that fit the available depth. Long-handled tools may exceed the opening even when their handles could theoretically fit diagonally, so measure them in the orientation you intend to use.
Grilling and patio accessories
Keter lists grilling equipment among the intended uses for its Cortina box. Store only clean, completely cool equipment and protect sharp edges from cushions. Fuel canisters, hot ash, flammable liquids and anything that requires a ventilated safety cabinet do not belong in a general deck box.
A mixed load of accessories
A combination of cushions, towels, toys and garden accessories can work if the largest items establish a workable base and the smaller pieces fill remaining spaces. Plan the stack before loading rather than pushing items down until the lid closes. Mixed loads are harder to retrieve, so place frequently used items near the top.

How to determine whether your items will fit
- List every item. Write down cushions, pads, chairs, toys, towels, tools and accessories. Include items you may add later in the season.
- Measure each item in its stored form. Record the largest length, width and thickness after folding or nesting. For a chair, measure the folded frame; for a cushion, measure the widest face and the thickest point.
- Obtain the box’s interior dimensions. Use the manufacturer’s internal width, depth and height, not exterior dimensions. If a specification is missing, ask the seller or manufacturer before purchasing.
- Check the lid opening. Compare the opening’s clear width and depth with the largest rigid or semi-rigid item. Account for the angle needed to insert it.
- Choose an orientation. Decide whether each item lies flat, stands on edge, nests inside another item or occupies a corner. Re-measure any item whose orientation changes its dimensions.
- Sketch the base layer. Place the longest and heaviest items first in a simple top-down plan. Keep hinges, struts and any raised interior features clear.
- Allow practical clearance. Leave enough room to lift items out without scraping the lid or compressing cushions excessively. This is practical packing advice, not a manufacturer-published allowance.
- Test retrieval, not just closure. A lid that closes once does not prove the arrangement is usable. Make sure the item you need first can be removed without unloading everything.
Orientation rules for common items
Cushions and pads
- Measure the largest face and thickness; do not rely on the label size of a cushion set.
- Stack similar shapes together so the pile stays level.
- Do not use the lid to compress a stack. Persistent pressure can deform foam and prevent the lid from sealing correctly.
- Keep fabric edges away from hinges and latch hardware.
Folded chairs
- Measure from the outermost frame points, including feet and armrests.
- Lay chairs flat when their folded length exceeds the box’s practical standing height.
- Alternate chair directions only if doing so does not create a raised corner that blocks the lid.
Long tools and accessories
- Check straight-line length first; diagonal placement is limited by the opening, not just the interior.
- Cap or wrap sharp ends so they cannot puncture cushions or the box walls.
- Do not force rigid items against the lid’s hinge path.
Capacity comparison checklist when choosing between models
When two boxes share a 200-gallon label, compare the following points rather than choosing by the label alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Comparison point | Why it affects real capacity |
|---|---|
| Interior width | Determines whether wide seat cushions or chair frames can lie flat. |
| Interior depth | Controls the fit of deep cushions, folded chairs and long accessories. |
| Interior height | Sets the maximum stack height and whether items can stand on edge. |
| Lid opening and clearance | Determines whether the largest item can be inserted and removed. |
| Interior shape and obstructions | Tapered walls, hinges and support hardware reduce usable corners. |
| Largest item’s orientation | A cushion or chair may fit in one direction but not another. |
| Ventilation and locking features | Useful for protection and security, but they do not increase storage capacity. |
Keter describes built-in ventilation and a padlock-compatible design for its Cortina model. Suncast lists a pad-lockable hasp for the BMDB200ZP. Those features can affect how you use the box, but they should be evaluated separately from the dimensions that determine fit.
Moisture, weight and safe storage
Dry items before closing the lid
Towels, cushions and swim gear should be dry before they go into a closed container. Water trapped in fabric or foam can create odor and mildew even when the box itself is weather resistant. If an item is damp after use, let it dry in an open, shaded area before storage.
Separate dirty or sharp equipment
Rinse sand and chlorine residue from pool accessories, and clean soil from garden tools before storage. Put sharp tools in a rigid container or wrap their edges so they cannot cut cushions or scratch the interior.
Respect the box’s load limits
The gallon rating does not state the lid’s seating capacity or the base’s maximum load. Do not sit or stand on the lid unless the specific manufacturer explicitly rates it for that use. Distribute heavy items across the floor instead of creating a concentrated stack on one corner.
Keep hazardous materials elsewhere
Do not store gasoline, propane cylinders, pesticides, solvents, hot coals or other hazardous materials in a general outdoor deck box. Follow the product label and local safety requirements for those substances.

Organizing a 200-gallon box for everyday use
- Create zones. Reserve one area for cushions, another for towels and toys, and a separate container inside for small garden or grilling accessories.
- Use washable bags or bins for small pieces. They prevent goggles, gloves and hand tools from disappearing under cushions.
- Label by season or activity. “Pool,” “patio,” and “garden” labels reduce unnecessary unloading.
- Keep high-use items on top. Place winter cushions or rarely used accessories below items needed weekly.
- Inspect the interior periodically. Remove debris, dry condensation and check that hinges and the latch remain clear.
Questions the gallon rating cannot answer
A 200-gallon label cannot tell you a standardized cushion count, the exact number of chairs, whether a particular chaise pad will fit, or how much mixed equipment remains after loading. Manufacturer sources reviewed for this guide do not publish a universal packing count for those objects. Any fixed number presented without the exact item and model should be treated skeptically.

Those are separate specifications that should be checked for the model you are considering.
Bottom line
A 200-gallon deck box is the right general size for bulky patio cushions, chaise pads, many folded chairs, pool and beach equipment, towels, garden supplies, grilling accessories and mixed outdoor gear. The deciding test is not the word “200”; it is whether the measured items fit through the opening and within the model’s interior width, depth and height.
Measure your belongings in their intended stored orientation, compare them with the exact internal dimensions, leave practical retrieval clearance and keep wet or hazardous materials out. That method gives a dependable answer for your box instead of an unreliable universal item count.
