An electrical fire or an overheating electrical component may smell like burning or melting plastic, rubber, or wiring. Sometimes the odor is only a vague burning smell. No scent confirms an electrical fire on its own: treat a new, unexplained burning odor near electrical equipment as a warning, not a diagnosis.
What does an electrical fire smell like?
People commonly describe the odor as burning plastic, melting rubber, or hot wiring. It may also be a general burning smell with no distinctive quality. The Philippines Bureau of Fire Protection includes melting plastic, rubber, or wiring among warning odors, while Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and Massachusetts Department of Fire Services also identify unusual or vague burning smells as possible electrical danger signs.

There is no reliable, unique scent that identifies an electrical fire or tells you where a fault is. An odor can signal overheating or fire risk, but smell alone cannot establish the cause.
What to do if you notice a burning electrical smell
If you see smoke or flames
- Leave the building and stay outside. Do not try to put out an electrical fire.
- Call your local emergency number. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service gives the advice: “In the event of a fire, do not attempt to extinguish the fire. Get out, stay out, call 999.” Use the emergency number for your location; 999 applies to the cited UK guidance.
If there is an odor but no visible fire
- Shut off power at the main breaker only if you can reach it safely. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises turning off the electrical system at the main circuit breaker when there is a burning odor. Do not approach a panel through smoke or fire, and do not enter standing water or operate electrical equipment while standing in water.
- Stop using the suspect appliance or circuit. Do not touch, open, or dismantle equipment to look for the source. New York City Fire Department guidance says to discontinue use of an appliance that develops a different smell, unusual sounds, or a warm cord.
- Arrange qualified help. Have a suspected electrical fault checked by a qualified electrician. FDNY also advises using a qualified licensed electrician for hot outlets or switch plates.
If electrical equipment has been wet
Do not turn wet electrical equipment back on until it has been inspected by a qualified electrician and is completely dry, CDC advises.

Other warning signs to notice from a safe distance
Do not touch or open equipment to check it. Alongside an unexplained burning odor, look for visible signs such as:
- Smoke, sparks, or scorch marks
- Melted or damaged plastic
- A cord that appears warm or equipment that seems hot
- Unusual sounds from an appliance or electrical equipment
Smoke or flames call for evacuation and an emergency call. Without visible fire, a persistent or unexplained odor still warrants stopping use of the suspect equipment and seeking qualified help.

Can an electrical fire smell like burning plastic?
Yes. Burning or melting plastic is one commonly reported description, along with melting rubber and hot wiring. But a plastic-like smell does not prove that an electrical fire is present, and not every electrical hazard will smell the same. Do not sniff an outlet, remove a cover, or try to trace the odor by touching equipment.

Reduce electrical fire risk at home
- Install working smoke alarms on every floor and test them at least monthly, as Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service recommends. A smoke alarm warns about smoke; it does not diagnose an electrical fault or necessarily alert you before smoke develops.
- Use bulbs that match the fixture’s recommended wattage and avoid overloading power strips, as the U.S. Fire Administration advises.
- Stop using appliances with a new or unusual smell, abnormal sounds, or a warm cord, and have suspected electrical problems assessed by a qualified professional.
