A red light in a house window has a historical association with a brothel, but the color alone does not tell you why a particular household is using one. It is a recognized meaning in English usage—not reliable evidence about a specific home or its occupants.
The historical meaning of a red light in a house window
Collins English Dictionary records a red lamp in or outside a house as a sign associated with a brothel. The related expression “red-light district” refers to an area associated with brothels; the dictionary notes that such establishments formerly displayed red lights. Collins English Dictionary’s entry for “red light” documents this conventional historical association.
Does a red light tell you what a particular home means?
No. A dictionary definition explains a recognized usage; it does not establish the intent behind a light at an individual home. Color by itself cannot show that a resident is using a historical signal, or establish anything about the people who live there. Avoid drawing conclusions about a neighbor or household without direct evidence.
Why the association can be misunderstood
A family-history account recalls that, around 1950–1951, acquaintances misunderstood red-shaded bedroom lamps as a brothel signal. This is one recollection, not evidence of a formal signaling system or of how often the association is used today. Callans and McClarys family-history account recounts the anecdote.

What to make of a red porch light
The historical association is worth knowing, but the available evidence does not establish a universal meaning for red porch or window lights today, or show that the color has a formal signaling status. Without more context, the reason for a particular light remains unknown; it is more accurate not to assign it a message.
