What Do N-P-K Numbers on Fertilizer Mean? A Practical Guide to Reading the Label

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The three numbers on a U.S. fertilizer bag are the product’s N-P-K grade: nitrogen (N), phosphorus listed as phosphate equivalent (P2O5), and potassium listed as potash equivalent (K2O), always in that order. Each number is a percentage of the product’s weight. A 10-pound bag marked 5-10-5 therefore contains 0.5 pound of nitrogen, 1 pound of phosphate equivalent, and 0.5 pound of potash equivalent.

The grade tells you what the product supplies, not what your soil or plants need. Use a soil-test recommendation, the crop or planting being grown, and the complete product label to decide whether a fertilizer is appropriate and how much to apply.

Read the grade from left to right

On conventional U.S. fertilizer labels, the three-number sequence is read in a fixed order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. First number — N: the percentage by weight of nitrogen.
  2. Second number — P: the percentage by weight expressed on the label as phosphate (P2O5) equivalent.
  3. Third number — K: the percentage by weight expressed on the label as potash (K2O) equivalent.

Thus, 5-10-5 means 5 percent nitrogen, 10 percent phosphate equivalent and 5 percent potash equivalent by weight. The figures are not pounds, nutrient ratios, or percentages of the entire chemical composition. They are the guaranteed-grade analysis used to describe the primary nutrients on the label.

The second and third figures deserve special care. In everyday speech, people often call them phosphorus and potassium, but conventional U.S. labels state them as P2O5 and K2O equivalents. Do not read the printed 10 as 10 percent elemental phosphorus, or the printed 5 as 5 percent elemental potassium. For a basic label calculation, use the numbers exactly as printed and keep the oxide-equivalent wording attached to them.

What a percentage by weight means

Each grade number is the fraction of the package’s total weight represented by that labeled nutrient form. To find the amount in a bag, multiply the package weight by the decimal form of the relevant percentage:

nutrient amount = package weight × (grade number ÷ 100)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, the first number in a 5-10-5 grade is 5. Convert 5 percent to 0.05, then multiply by the bag weight. The same method works for the second and third numbers, while retaining the label terms phosphate equivalent and potash equivalent.

Worked example: a 10-pound bag of 5-10-5

A 10-pound bag contains:

Label component Calculation Amount in the bag
Nitrogen (N) 10 lb × 0.05 0.5 lb
Phosphate equivalent (P2O5) 10 lb × 0.10 1 lb
Potash equivalent (K2O) 10 lb × 0.05 0.5 lb

This example describes the nutrient quantities represented by the grade. The remainder of the bag can include carrier material, other ingredients, or additional nutrients listed elsewhere on the label. The three numbers do not describe every substance in the product.

Worked example: a 50-pound bag of 10-10-10

For a 50-pound bag marked 10-10-10, each grade number is 10 percent. Multiplying 50 pounds by 0.10 gives 5 pounds of nitrogen, 5 pounds of phosphate equivalent and 5 pounds of potash equivalent.

Equal numbers do not mean the product is automatically right for every lawn or garden. They only show that the three labeled components are present at equal percentages by weight.

Grade and ratio are different measurements

The grade is the three-number percentage analysis printed on the package. The ratio describes the relative proportions of those three numbers after they are reduced to the smallest common scale. A ratio is not a second set of percentages and cannot be used in place of the grade when calculating how much product is in a bag.

Example: converting 18-6-6 to a ratio

For 18-6-6, divide every number by the lowest nonzero number, 6:

18 ÷ 6 : 6 ÷ 6 : 6 ÷ 6 = 3 : 1 : 1

The product therefore has a 3-1-1 ratio, while its grade remains 18-6-6. The grade tells you the actual percentage concentration; the ratio helps you compare the relative balance among N, P and K.

What if one number is zero?

A zero means the corresponding labeled N, P or K component is absent from the grade. When reducing a grade to a ratio, use the lowest nonzero number as the divisor, as in the standard method. Do not divide by zero. A grade with a zero can still be a useful fertilizer analysis when a soil or crop recommendation calls for no added amount of that nutrient.

What “complete fertilizer” means

A fertilizer is generally called complete when all three primary nutrients are represented in its grade. For example, a 10-10-10 product is complete because it has nonzero N, P and K entries. “Complete” does not mean the bag contains every nutrient plants require, nor does it mean the formulation is suitable for every soil. Calcium, sulfur, micronutrients and other ingredients may be listed separately, and their presence must be checked on the label.

A grade such as 10-0-10 is not complete under this convention because the phosphorus entry is zero. That description does not by itself say whether the product is better or worse; it simply tells you which primary nutrient is not supplied in the labeled analysis.

How to decide which grade fits a planting

There is no universal “best” N-P-K grade. A balanced-looking product such as 10-10-10 should not be selected merely because the numbers match. Soil nutrient levels differ, and recommendations may call for substantially more of one nutrient than another.

1. Start with a soil test

Use a laboratory soil test as the basis for a fertilizer decision. The test identifies nutrient conditions and supports a recommendation suited to the site. University extension guidance advises testing before adding fertilizer rather than assuming that a plant needs all three nutrients in equal amounts. A home test kit may be convenient, but the cited guidance supports laboratory testing; do not assume that every home kit provides an equivalent recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Match the recommendation to the crop or planting

Interpret the soil-test recommendation together with what you are growing. A vegetable bed, turf area, ornamental planting and container crop can have different nutrient goals and timing. The N-P-K grade is only the concentration statement; the crop and soil context determine whether those concentrations are appropriate.

3. Choose a source that supplies the needed proportions

If the recommendation calls for relatively more nitrogen and little or no phosphorus, a grade with that pattern is more relevant than a nominally balanced grade. If phosphorus or potassium is the limiting nutrient, compare products that provide the required amount without adding unnecessary quantities of the others. Follow the recommendation and product label for the application rate; this article does not establish a general rate for any lawn, garden or crop.

4. Check the complete label

Look beyond the three large numbers. The label can identify nutrient sources, additional guaranteed nutrients and how nitrogen is divided between quick-release and slow-release forms. Those details affect how the product is used, even when two products display similar N-P-K grades.

How to compare two fertilizer products

When two products are being considered for the same soil-test recommendation, compare the information that changes the nutrient delivery rather than judging the bold numbers alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Grade: compare the N, P2O5 and K2O percentages with the recommended nutrient proportions.
  • Amount supplied: calculate the pounds of each labeled component in the package or in the planned application.
  • Package size: a higher percentage does not automatically mean more total nutrient if the packages have different weights.
  • Nitrogen form: check whether the label separates quick-release and slow-release nitrogen.
  • Other guaranteed nutrients and sources: read the detailed analysis and ingredient information for nutrients not represented by the three headline numbers.
  • Directions and restrictions: use the product’s stated rate, timing, placement and safety instructions for your crop and location.

Do not declare one formulation superior without knowing the crop, soil test, timing and application method. Two products with different grades can both be appropriate for different recommendations, while two products with the same grade can differ in release characteristics or other labeled ingredients.

Common label-reading mistakes

Mistake: treating the numbers as pounds

A 10-10-10 grade does not mean a 10-pound bag contains 10 pounds of each nutrient. The figures are percentages. A 50-pound bag contains 5 pounds of each labeled component because 50 × 0.10 equals 5.

Mistake: calling the second and third numbers elemental percentages

The conventional U.S. analysis reports the second number as P2O5 equivalent and the third as K2O equivalent. Keep that convention in your explanation and calculations instead of relabeling the printed values as elemental phosphorus or potassium.

Mistake: confusing ratio with grade

An 18-6-6 product has a 3-1-1 ratio, but it is not a 3 percent, 1 percent, 1 percent product. Use 18, 6 and 6 for package calculations; use 3-1-1 only to describe relative proportions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: assuming “complete” means complete nutrition

Complete refers to the presence of all three primary N-P-K entries. It does not guarantee that every nutrient is present or that the blend meets a particular soil’s needs.

Mistake: choosing a “balanced” grade without testing

Equal numbers can add a nutrient your soil does not need, while failing to supply enough of another. Base the choice on a laboratory soil test, the crop recommendation and the label directions.

Regional and label qualifications

The explanations above describe the common U.S. fertilizer-label convention reflected in university extension guidance. Label terminology, guaranteed-analysis rules and recommendations can vary by jurisdiction and product. For a product sold outside the United States, or for a specialty formulation, use that product’s local label and regulatory instructions rather than assuming that every country presents N-P-K in exactly the same way.

Even within the United States, the grade does not provide an application schedule. Apply only according to the product label and the soil-test or crop recommendation. If the label and a general rule of thumb conflict, the label’s legally supplied directions for that product and location control.

A quick procedure for decoding any bag

  1. Locate the three-number guaranteed analysis, such as 5-10-5 or 10-10-10.
  2. Read the entries as N, P2O5 equivalent and K2O equivalent, in that order.
  3. Confirm that each number is a percentage by weight, not a pound amount.
  4. Multiply the bag weight by each percentage divided by 100 to calculate the labeled amount in the package.
  5. Check whether any number is zero and whether the product is therefore complete or missing one primary nutrient.
  6. If you need a relative comparison, reduce the grade to a ratio using the lowest nonzero number.
  7. Compare the result with a laboratory soil-test recommendation and the needs of the crop or planting.
  8. Read the rest of the label for nutrient sources, release forms, additional nutrients, application directions and local restrictions.

Using this sequence prevents the most common errors: reversing the order, treating percentages as pounds, mistaking oxide equivalents for elemental values, and selecting a product without reference to the soil and crop.
