A 4,000-ton-per-day (tpd) clinker line is rated to make 4,000 tonnes of clinker on each operating day. It is not automatically a 4,000-tpd cement plant. Finished-cement capacity depends on how many days the kiln runs, the clinker share in the cement recipe, and the capacity and operating schedule of the cement mills.
A useful worked example is the International Finance Corporation’s description of OCL India Ltd.: a kiln line rated at 4,000 tpd of clinker and annual clinker capacity of 1.32 million tonnes. That pairing implies 330 operating days (4,000 × 330). The same project description lists a separate cement-grinding unit rated at 900,000 tonnes per year, or 150 tonnes per hour. Those are different capacity figures with different scopes, so they should not be collapsed into one number.

What the 4,000-tpd rating actually measures
In a conventional cement plant, the kiln produces clinker: hard, nodular material formed by heating a prepared raw mix. Cement is made later by grinding clinker with gypsum and, depending on the product, other constituents such as supplementary cementitious materials. Therefore, “4,000 tpd” describes the kiln line’s clinker output, not the mass of finished cement leaving the site.

The distinction matters whenever a project description, permit, company presentation or sale prospectus uses the word “capacity.” A line may have enough kiln capacity to supply more cement than its mills can grind, or its cement mills may process material from several clinker lines. Capacity must therefore be identified by product and by equipment scope.

Converting 4,000 tpd into annual clinker capacity
The basic calculation is:
Annual clinker capacity = 4,000 tonnes per operating day × operating days per year
The 330-day project basis
For OCL India Ltd., the International Finance Corporation project summary, disclosed September 7, 2006, states “a new kiln line of 4,000 tons per day (tpd) clinker production capacity (1.32 million tpy of clinker).” The arithmetic is 4,000 × 330 = 1,320,000 tonnes per year. In this context, 1.32 million tonnes is the project’s annual capacity basis, not a universal conversion for every plant.
The 365-day arithmetic ceiling
If someone multiplies the rating by every calendar day, the result is 4,000 × 365 = 1.46 million tonnes of clinker per year. That is a simple mathematical ceiling before maintenance, planned outages, breakdowns, product-quality constraints, raw-material interruptions or other operating limits. It is not an actual production forecast.
| Annualization basis | Calculation | Result | How to describe it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 330 operating days | 4,000 × 330 | 1.32 million tonnes of clinker per year | Capacity basis stated for the OCL project |
| 365 calendar days | 4,000 × 365 | 1.46 million tonnes of clinker per year | Arithmetic ceiling, not a reported production forecast |
When comparing plants, always ask whether “per year” means a nameplate annual figure, a planned operating-day assumption or measured production during a particular year. A daily rating without its time basis is incomplete.
Why clinker capacity does not equal cement capacity
Grinding may be the limiting step
The OCL project description gives the kiln line 1.32 million tonnes per year of clinker capacity but lists a separate grinding unit with nominal capacity of 900,000 tonnes per year (150 tonnes per hour). This illustrates why a plant can publish a large kiln figure and a smaller cement-grinding figure.

The excerpt does not establish that this 900,000-tpy unit is the only cement mill serving the kiln line. It should therefore be used as an example of separate equipment capacities, not as proof that OCL’s entire cement plant is limited to 900,000 tonnes per year. A site may have additional mills, mills shared with other lines, or dispatch arrangements outside the stated project scope.
The clinker share in the cement mix
Finished cement normally includes clinker plus gypsum and, for some cement types, other constituents. If a cement product contains 80% clinker by mass, the theoretical cement supported by 1.32 million tonnes of clinker is:
Potential cement = clinker available ÷ clinker fraction
Potential cement = 1.32 million tonnes ÷ 0.80
Potential cement = 1.65 million tonnes of cement
The 80% figure comes from the performance basis referenced in the IFC’s STG Cement project review (2017). It is an assumption used in that analysis, not a universal cement recipe. The 1.65-million-tonne result is consequently a theoretical conversion. It becomes a plant-capacity statement only if grinding, additive handling, storage, packing, dispatch and operating time can all support it.
Changing the clinker fraction changes the result. A lower clinker fraction can yield more tonnes of cement from the same clinker inventory, while a higher fraction yields fewer tonnes. The product standard, market mix and approved formulation determine which ratio is appropriate.

How to read other companies’ capacity figures
Company-level figures are configuration-specific
Saudi Cement’s manufacturing-capacity page, accessed October 13, 2026, reports 28,000 tpd of clinker, 9.2 million tonnes of clinker per year and 9.7 million tonnes of cement per year. Those are company-level equivalents for that producer’s own collection of lines, mills and annualization assumptions. They demonstrate that clinker and cement totals are distinct; they do not provide a conversion factor that can be scaled directly to a different plant.
Historical capacity may no longer operate
Yanbu Cement Company’s history page, accessed October 13, 2026, describes an earlier combined capacity of 4,000 tpd, equivalent to about 1.3 million tonnes of clinker annually, and says those lines were stopped in 2016. That is a historical rating, not evidence of the company’s present operating capacity. The page also describes later lines with different rated capacities.
This is why every capacity comparison needs a status and date: proposed or designed, commissioned, currently operating, mothballed or permanently stopped.
Confirm which product a third party measured
The VOITH Construction page for Huaxin Cement Narayani, accessed October 13, 2026, describes production of 4,000 tons per day, but the available description does not specify whether that is clinker or finished cement. It should not be used as a like-for-like clinker-line comparison without that clarification.

A practical checklist for evaluating a 4,000-tpd claim
- Identify the product. Look for “clinker,” “cement,” “finished cement,” or another explicit material. If the product is not named, the number cannot support a clinker-to-cement comparison.
- Define the physical scope. Determine whether the figure covers one kiln line, all kilns at a site, one grinding unit or the entire company.
- Check the time basis. Record the stated operating days, annualization method or measured production year. Do not silently substitute 365 days for a project’s 330-day basis.
- Separate rated capacity from output. Nameplate tpd is a design or operating rating. Actual tonnes depend on uptime, maintenance, feed quality, fuel and power availability, market demand and other operating conditions.
- Check the clinker-to-cement assumption. Record the clinker percentage and whether gypsum or other constituents are included. An 80% assumption is not automatically valid for every cement product.
- Find the downstream constraint. Compare cement-mill tonnes per hour and annual tonnes with kiln supply. Include storage, packing and dispatch if the question concerns saleable cement.
- Verify date and status. A current operating line, a planned project and a line stopped years ago are different facts even when their tpd ratings match.
How to report the number accurately
A precise description would read: “The project specifies a kiln line rated at 4,000 tpd of clinker. On the project’s 330-operating-day basis, that equals 1.32 million tonnes of clinker per year. Finished-cement capacity must be checked separately against the clinker share in the product and the available grinding equipment.”
If using the 80% assumption from the STG Cement review, add the qualification: “At an assumed 80% clinker content, 1.32 million tonnes of clinker could theoretically support 1.65 million tonnes of cement, provided downstream capacity and operating time are sufficient.” This wording keeps a calculated possibility separate from a reported plant capacity.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling 4,000 tpd “cement capacity.” Correct it to 4,000 tpd of clinker unless the source explicitly measures finished cement.
- Multiplying by 365 and presenting the result as production. Label 1.46 million tonnes as arithmetic only; use the stated operating-day basis when a project supplies one.
- Applying one plant’s cement/clinker ratio to another. The Saudi Cement figures reflect that company’s configuration and cannot be transferred to a single-line plant.
- Treating a grinding-unit figure as the whole site limit. Confirm whether other mills serve the line before declaring total cement capacity.
- Using a legacy rating as current capacity. Check whether the line is commissioned, operating, idle or stopped, as the Yanbu example demonstrates.
- Comparing unnamed products. A 4,000-tpd statement with no product description, such as the Huaxin Narayani page’s wording, is not enough for a clinker comparison.
Bottom line for planners and readers
A 4,000-tpd clinker line represents 4,000 tonnes of kiln clinker per operating day. The clearest documented annual example is 1.32 million tonnes of clinker at 330 operating days. A 365-day multiplication gives 1.46 million tonnes only as an unadjusted ceiling. Finished-cement capacity must then be established separately from the cement recipe and the plant’s grinding and logistics equipment; at an explicitly assumed 80% clinker share, 1.32 million tonnes would theoretically correspond to 1.65 million tonnes of cement, not a guaranteed operating total.
