A fan switch marked L, 1, 2 and 3 is commonly a multi-speed selector: L is typically the incoming line/live or common connection, and 1, 2 and 3 are switched contacts for fan-speed settings. The labels alone do not reveal which number is low, medium or high, or confirm that another switch is compatible.
What the L and numbered terminals usually mean
On this type of selector, L commonly marks the line/live or common terminal. The numbered terminals are typically the selected connections used to change fan speed. This is a common interpretation, not a complete wiring diagram for every fan or switch.
Do not assume terminal 1 always means low, terminal 3 always means high, or that a particular wire color belongs on a particular terminal. The fan’s model-specific diagram and the original connections are more reliable than the labels alone.
How to identify a compatible replacement switch
Matching labels are not enough to establish compatibility. Compare the old switch and candidate replacement using the fan documentation and the replacement’s own specifications.

- Fan and switch identification: Find the fan make and model, and the old switch’s part number if available.
- Terminal sequence and contact positions: Check that the internal switching sequence matches, not just that both switches have L, 1, 2 and 3 markings.
- Connections and physical fit: Compare the number of wires or terminals and the switch’s physical configuration.
- Electrical ratings: Confirm that the replacement’s stated ratings are suitable for the fan, using its documentation.
For example, the Zing Ear ZE-208S listing describes a four-wire switch with OFF, L-1, L-2 and L-3 positions, rated at 6 A at 125 VAC or 3 A at 250 VAC. Those specifications apply to that listed model; they are not universal fan-switch ratings. The listing also says the original terminal sequence must match, so it is not a drop-in choice based on labels alone.

What to do before changing the wiring
- Turn off power at the circuit breaker. A specialist wiring guide instructs users to turn off electrical current at its source before rewiring: CeilingFanParts.net switch guidance.
- Record the existing connections. Before disconnecting wires, photograph the switch clearly or write down which wire is connected to each terminal. Wire colors vary, so retain the actual wire-to-terminal mapping rather than relying on color assumptions.
- Check the fan’s model-specific diagram. Compare it with the old switch sequence and the replacement documentation.
- Stop if anything is unclear. Do not rewire with power on or guess at connections. Consult the fan manufacturer’s documentation or a qualified electrician if the wiring or compatibility cannot be confirmed.
