CFM means cubic feet per minute, the volume of air a leaf blower moves. MPH means miles per hour, the speed of that air. CFM is a useful clue for sweeping larger amounts of loose material, while MPH helps indicate how forcefully the air may loosen wet, matted or stuck debris. Neither number is a complete performance rating: nozzle design, the measurement point and operating conditions all affect a fair comparison.
CFM and MPH measure different parts of airflow
A leaf blower produces an airstream with both a quantity and a speed. Manufacturers publish those characteristics using two different units. Treating the units as interchangeable is the most common source of confusion when comparing blowers.

CFM: the amount of air moved
CFM stands for cubic feet per minute. It describes the volume of air passing through the blower in a minute. A higher CFM indicates that the machine is moving a larger volume of air, which can be useful when you need to push a broad layer of loose leaves, grass clippings or similar material across an area.
CFM does not tell you the width of the clearing path, the distance the material will travel, or the time required to clear a particular pile. Those outcomes also depend on the nozzle, the shape and moisture of the debris, the surface beneath it and how the operator directs the airstream. Use CFM as an indication of available air volume, not as a guarantee of a specific cleanup rate.

MPH: the speed of the air
MPH stands for miles per hour. It describes air velocity, typically reported at or near the blower outlet. A higher outlet speed can help break the grip of wet leaves, matted clippings or debris that is stuck to pavement. Toro describes air speed as useful for lifting and loosening stubborn debris.
Velocity falls as the airstream travels away from the nozzle. Therefore, a maximum outlet figure should not be read as the speed that reaches every point on the ground. A narrow nozzle can concentrate air and produce a high MPH reading, while a broader outlet can spread more air over a larger area. The two designs may feel different in use even when one headline number is higher.

CFM is a volume rate; MPH is a velocity. They answer different questions: “How much air is moving?” and “How fast is it moving?” A blower can have a strong CFM number without the highest MPH, or a high MPH produced through a concentrated outlet without the greatest CFM. There is no responsible way to rank every blower by adding, averaging or directly converting the two figures.
| Rating | What it measures | Useful clue | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|---|
| CFM | Air volume in cubic feet per minute | How much loose material the airflow may move across an area | Clearing width, clearing time, ground-level speed or performance with wet debris |
| MPH | Air velocity in miles per hour | How readily the airstream may loosen stuck or matted debris | How much air is available, how far that speed persists, or overall cleanup performance |
Why nozzle and test conditions change the comparison
Published numbers are meaningful only when you know how they were obtained. AM Leonard points out that the location at which airflow is measured can affect the result. A reading taken at the outlet is not the same as a reading taken farther down the tube or at the ground. The nozzle attached during the test also matters because it changes the cross-section and concentration of the airstream.
Operating condition is another variable. A maximum setting, a particular tube configuration or a turbo mode may produce a different result from the setting used for ordinary work. The available evidence does not establish one universal cross-manufacturer protocol that makes every CFM and MPH figure directly comparable. That does not mean every maker uses an incompatible method; it means you should inspect the model documentation before treating two headline numbers as an apples-to-apples test.

Questions to ask about any published rating
- Where was the airflow measured: at the outlet, at the end of a tube or at another point?
- Which nozzle or tube configuration was installed?
- Was the figure recorded at a maximum or a normal operating setting?
- Does the manufacturer identify a testing standard or other test condition?
- Are the CFM and MPH figures tied to the same configuration?
If a specification page does not answer these questions, record the number as a manufacturer claim with unknown comparison conditions rather than assuming it is directly equivalent to a competitor’s number.

The best choice depends on the material and the area, not on the largest isolated number. Start by describing the job in practical terms.
Moving a broad layer of loose leaves
When leaves are dry and lying loosely over a driveway, lawn or construction access area, air volume is an important clue. A higher CFM can help maintain a broad moving stream, allowing you to gather material into rows or piles. You still need to check the nozzle and the manufacturer’s intended-use description, because CFM alone does not specify how wide the stream will be.
Breaking loose wet or matted debris
Wet leaves and compacted material often resist a broad, gentle flow. MPH becomes more relevant because a faster stream can help lift and separate material from the surface. A high MPH figure is not a promise that every wet pile will move; distance from the nozzle, the outlet shape and the material’s moisture all affect the result.
Handling mixed cleanup
Many jobs include both tasks: first breaking a damp edge loose, then sweeping a large area. In that case, look for a balanced specification and a variable-speed or mode description in the model documentation, if provided. Do not select solely by whichever figure is larger. Compare the actual configuration and intended use, then consider whether the blower can deliver the type of airflow you need at the setting you will use.

| Job condition | Rating to examine first | Why | Check before deciding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dry, loose leaves over a wide area | CFM | Volume helps carry a larger amount of material across the surface | Nozzle width, operating mode and the maker’s clearing description |
| Wet, matted or stuck debris | MPH | Higher velocity can help break the material’s grip | Measurement point, nozzle concentration and the distance at which you work |
| Regular mixed cleanup | Both | You may need force to start a pile and volume to move it afterward | Configuration, controls and intended-use guidance rather than a single headline number |
A step-by-step method for comparing two blowers
- Describe the debris. Note whether it is dry, wet, loose, matted or stuck to the surface. This determines whether volume or velocity is the more immediate concern.
- Write down both ratings. Record the stated CFM and MPH for each model, including whether the figures are labeled maximum values. Keep the units separate.
- Identify the tested configuration. Read the specification notes for the nozzle, tube and operating setting used to obtain the figures. If the page does not state them, mark the comparison as limited.
- Check the measurement point. A velocity measured at the outlet should not be interpreted as the speed several feet away. Look for the maker’s explanation of where the reading was taken.
- Read the intended-use description. Manufacturers sometimes associate a model with a particular yard size, debris type or cleanup scale. Use that context alongside the numerical ratings.
- Reject false precision. Do not convert CFM to MPH, combine the numbers into a score or announce a winner solely because one figure is larger.
- Make the decision for your work area. Choose the model whose documented airflow and configuration fit the material, surface and area you actually clear.
Illustrative manufacturer specifications
Toro’s product information provides a useful example of why both ratings and intended use should be read together. The figures below are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test results.
| Model listing | Published CFM | Published MPH | Manufacturer-described use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60V MAX 605 CFM blower (51820 / 51820T) | 605 CFM | 120 MPH | Medium-yard work and regular leaf clearing |
| 900 CFM blower (51827 / 51827T) | 900 CFM | 165 MPH | Wet leaves, heavy debris and larger fall cleanups |
These numbers show a product line in which the model described for heavier cleanup has both greater stated volume and greater stated speed. They do not prove that every blower with 900 CFM and 165 MPH will outperform every 605 CFM and 120 MPH blower, because nozzle design, measurement conditions and the actual debris can differ. They also are not population statistics or laboratory results from an independent organization. Confirm the current regional product page before relying on the figures; specifications and configurations can change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “maximum MPH” really tells you
Maximum MPH is a peak velocity under the manufacturer’s stated test setup. It is useful for comparing the loosening potential of two otherwise similar configurations, but it is not the speed of the air throughout the entire work zone. As the stream expands and encounters resistance, its velocity changes. The number also may be achieved with a narrow outlet that prioritizes concentration over coverage.
For a practical comparison, pair the maximum MPH with the CFM and the nozzle description. Ask whether you need a focused jet to start a stuck pile, a broad flow to gather material, or both at different stages. If the documentation provides no configuration details, treat the MPH value as a directional clue rather than a guarantee of ground-level force.

What “maximum CFM” really tells you
A maximum CFM figure indicates the greatest stated air volume under a specified setup. It does not identify the width of the clearing path or guarantee that a large pile will move in one pass. A wide outlet may distribute volume over a broad pattern; a narrow outlet may concentrate it. The surface, wind and moisture can also change how much material is moved in practice.

Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing the highest MPH without checking CFM
A very fast, concentrated stream may loosen a stubborn spot but leave you with less broad airflow for gathering. Check both ratings and the outlet configuration.
Choosing the highest CFM without considering stuck debris
Large volume can move loose leaves efficiently, yet a damp edge may require a faster stream to break free. Match the priority to the material you face most often.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAssuming every number was measured the same way
Measurement location, nozzle and operating condition can differ. Look for the test information in each model’s documentation and state the limitation when it is absent.
Reading outlet speed as ground-level speed
Air speed decreases with distance from the nozzle. Keep the nozzle position and working distance in mind instead of treating the outlet figure as a constant across the yard.
Turning two properties into one unofficial score
There is no evidence-based formula in the available material that lets you combine CFM and MPH into a universal performance index. Keep the ratings separate and evaluate the job context.
A practical checklist before you buy or specify a blower
- List the typical debris and whether it is loose, wet, matted or stuck.
- Decide whether broad coverage or concentrated loosening is the first priority.
- Record CFM and MPH separately for every candidate.
- Note the nozzle, tube and operating setting associated with each figure.
- Check where airflow was measured and whether a testing method is identified.
- Read the manufacturer’s intended-use description for the exact model.
- Confirm the current regional specification page because product details can change.
- Use the ratings as clues, not as a guarantee of a particular cleanup result.
The short answer to “Is CFM or MPH more important?”
Neither is universally more important. CFM deserves more weight when you are moving a large amount of loose material across an area. MPH deserves more weight when you must loosen wet, compacted or stuck debris. Most real cleanup involves both actions, so compare the two ratings together, inspect the nozzle and measurement conditions, and follow the model-specific intended-use guidance.
