The same color can mean different things in different manufacturers’ product lines, so identify the exact pad and check its task, machine compatibility and dimensions before choosing it.
What abrasive pad colors tell you
Color can help distinguish grades within one product family or signal a floor-maintenance task. Its meaning depends on the manufacturer and the specific line. A color by itself does not establish how aggressive a pad is, what surface it suits, or whether it will fit a particular machine.
Two Norton ranges illustrate the distinction: SandDollar colors identify abrasive grades, while colors in Norton’s floor-maintenance guide identify tasks and processes. Those are product-specific conventions, not a general color chart.
Norton SandDollar colors identify abrasive grade
Norton describes SandDollar as a range of color-coded pads for abrading finishes. In the listed Norton SandDollar round sponge floor-pad products, the colors correspond to these grades:
#1 Best Overall
- 24 Count Pack
- Textured Wet mopping pad cloths TRAP + LOCK dirt deep in cloth while scrubbing strip removes tough spots
- Safe on all floor types, so you can use it on tile, hardwood, and vinyl flooring* *do not use on unfinished, oiled or waxed wooden boards, non-sealed tiles or carpeted floors because they may be water sensitive
- Use with your Swiffer Sweeper Dust Mop - the convenient combination of a broom and mop for a quick and easy clean

| SandDollar pad color | Grade in listed products |
|---|---|
| Blue | Coarse |
| Red | Medium |
| Yellow | Fine |
| Green | Very fine |
These mappings apply to the Norton SandDollar products described by Norton, not to every blue, red, yellow or green floor pad. Product listings provide specific grit and size details, which can vary; check the individual product page rather than relying on color alone. See Norton’s SandDollar FAQ and the SandDollar round sponge floor-pad listing.
Norton says of the SandDollar system: “The color coding on the SandDollar won’t wear off, so a contractor will always know what grit he is using, especially if he is reusing the pad.” That statement concerns this product family; it does not make its color mapping universal. Norton maintenance-pad colors describe tasks
Norton’s floor-maintenance guide uses color to distinguish processes and levels of cleaning or polishing, rather than presenting the colors as numbered abrasive grades.
| Norton pad name and color | Use described in Norton’s guide |
|---|---|
| Green Super Scrub | Address heavy scuff marks and heavy soiling. |
| Blue Super Clean | Clean moderate wear and dirt. |
| Red Buffer | Light cleaning and producing a high-gloss finish. |
| White Super Gloss | Dry or light-mist polishing. |
The guide places these pads within different maintenance processes and machine-speed ranges. Choose the process and operating conditions that suit the floor and machine; do not interpret this task-oriented list as a grade chart. Norton Floor Maintenance Process Guide

Why color is not a universal code
Pad colors and names vary across manufacturers and product families. 3M’s floor-pad brochure compares products and colors across brands for work such as stripping, scrubbing, cleaning, buffing, burnishing and stone maintenance. Its industrial hand-pad page likewise directs users to choose by grit coarseness, color and application. These sources show why a color convention from one line should not be transferred automatically to another. 3M Floor Pads brochure; 3M Scotch-Brite Industrial Hand Pads
How to choose the right pad
- Define the job and surface. Decide whether you need to abrade a finish, scrub, clean, buff, burnish or polish, and identify the floor or material involved.
- Identify the exact product family. Find the manufacturer and product line, then use that line’s own color key and grade or task description.
- Confirm machine and operating conditions. Check that the pad is intended for your machine type and the process or speed you plan to use. Norton’s guide differentiates processes and low- and high-speed floor-machine use.
- Match the pad’s dimensions and specifications. Confirm diameter and other stated product details against the equipment; a similar color or task name does not guarantee a fit. Norton’s product listing gives product-specific size and grit or grade details.
- Do not substitute by color alone. When replacing a pad or switching suppliers, verify the new product’s own grade, application and compatibility.
What to compare when choosing between pads
- Task and surface: Check that the product is intended for the operation and floor or material.
- Grade or aggressiveness: Use the manufacturer’s grade or application description, not a color borrowed from another line.
- Machine and operating conditions: Confirm machine type and any process or speed guidance.
- Dimensions: Match the pad diameter and stated specifications to the equipment.
- Construction: Compare material or construction only where the product information specifies it.
Manufacturer comparison material can help show the range of pad families and jobs, but it does not establish a universal performance ranking between brands. Base a purchase on the exact product’s stated use and specifications, not an assumed cross-brand color scale. 3M Floor Pads brochure; Norton Catalog 460, Professional Cleaning Market
