Should You Add Coffee Grounds to Hydrangeas? What They Can—and Can’t—Do

Used coffee grounds can go into compost, but their temporary, limited effect on soil pH makes them an unreliable hydrangea color treatment. Test soil before changing it.

You can add used coffee grounds to a compost pile, but they are not a dependable way to turn hydrangeas blue. Oregon State University Extension says any soil-pH change from grounds is temporary and too small to make the soil sufficiently acidic for acid-loving plants such as blue-flowering hydrangeas. Test the soil before making a deliberate pH adjustment.

Do coffee grounds change hydrangea color?

Not reliably. Hydrangea color can respond to soil conditions, but coffee grounds are not a proven color treatment: their effect on soil pH is temporary and insufficient to produce the needed change, according to Oregon State University Extension.

Color response also depends on the kind of hydrangea. University of Maryland Extension notes that soil acidity affects flower color in most cultivars, with white-flowered cultivars as an exception. For Hydrangea macrophylla, lower pH can make aluminum ions available to the plant, supporting blue blossoms. The University of Connecticut Extension describes pH 4.0 to 5.0 as the range in which this occurs; it is a source-specific range, not a universal target for every hydrangea or garden.

What to do if you want to adjust hydrangea color

  1. Identify the hydrangea. Find out whether it is a color-responsive type and cultivar. White-flowered cultivars generally do not follow the usual pH-driven color change.
  2. Test the soil. A soil test establishes the starting pH so you can decide whether any adjustment is appropriate.
  3. Choose an amendment for the measured condition. Follow its label and locally applicable extension advice rather than relying on coffee grounds or a homemade dose.

North Carolina State Extension describes acid soil as below pH 6.0 in its hydrangea profile. That general description does not establish that coffee grounds will lower a particular garden’s pH enough to affect bloom color; Oregon State Extension specifically characterizes their effect as temporary and too small for that purpose.

How to reuse grounds without treating them as a pH fix

Used grounds can be recycled in compost, but moderation matters. Applying excess grounds directly before they have been composted can temporarily tie up nitrogen, and grounds may inhibit seed germination or slow plant growth. Washington State University Extension also cautions against using them where plants are being grown from seed; see its guidance on coffee grounds in compost.

Do not assume grounds will make compost acidic. WSU notes that their pH changes as they decompose, so they are better understood as a compost ingredient than as a targeted pH amendment.
