Most data centres need a coordinated electrical system rather than one backup appliance: utility feeds supply the normal load, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) carries critical equipment immediately when the supply fails, and standby generators take over for a longer outage. Switchgear, transformers, power distribution units, batteries, controls and fuel logistics determine whether that chain actually works.

There is no universal UPS runtime, generator size or redundancy tier. The correct design depends on the facility’s critical load, availability target, maintenance strategy, local requirements and the way its IT equipment can recover. The sections below explain the functions, sequence, sizing decisions and failure limits that should be resolved in an engineered design.

The backup-power chain in a data centre

Under normal conditions, electricity travels from one or more utility services through switchgear, transformers and distribution equipment to power distribution units (PDUs), then to servers, storage, networking and cooling controls. The UPS sits in that chain to protect selected loads from both interruptions and poor-quality power.

When the utility voltage fails or becomes unacceptable, stored energy in the UPS supports the protected load immediately. A generator starts, reaches operating conditions and is connected through transfer equipment. The UPS bridges that start-and-transfer interval. Once the generator is carrying the load, the UPS normally returns to charging its energy store while continuing to regulate the output.

Microsoft describes this operating pattern in its datacentre documentation: UPS systems respond instantly to a failure or unacceptable voltage, while generators provide support for extended outages and planned maintenance. That is an operator example, not a universal specification; each facility must define its own load, transfer and endurance requirements.

Why one device cannot do every job

  • Utility and distribution equipment: provide the normal source and safely route power through the building.
  • UPS: supplies immediate continuity, protects against voltage and frequency disturbances, and gives the generator time to start or enables an orderly shutdown.
  • Generator: supplies energy for a prolonged interruption, subject to its rated capacity, condition, on-site fuel and fuel replenishment arrangements.
  • Controls and monitoring: detect abnormal conditions, command transfers and alert operators to failures, low fuel, battery problems or maintenance needs.

Removing any link creates a different risk. A generator without a UPS leaves servers exposed during the start sequence. A UPS without a sustainable energy source cannot support a long outage. A redundant UPS with a shared upstream switchboard may still have a single point of failure.

What a UPS does

The U.S. Department of Energy defines a UPS power system as a combination of power converters, switches and stored-energy devices such as batteries. In practical terms, it continuously manages the electrical path to the protected load and changes to stored energy when the input source is lost or outside acceptable limits.

Immediate ride-through

A UPS does not wait for a generator to become available. Its stored energy is available as soon as the input fails, so servers can continue operating while the generator starts and transfer equipment closes. If the outage is shorter than the designed bridge period, the generator may never be needed.

Power conditioning

UPS equipment can correct power sags, surges and frequency distortion that can upset sensitive electronics even when the utility has not failed completely. The level of conditioning depends on the topology selected for the site.

UPS topology How it protects the load Typical use implication
Voltage and frequency dependent (VFD) Basic protection; the load remains more dependent on the incoming source. Suitable only where the power environment and protection requirement justify the simpler approach.
Voltage independent (VI) Intermediate regulation and battery support. Useful where moderate conditioning is sufficient.
Voltage and frequency independent (VFI) Highest conditioning level among these three categories; the inverter continuously supplies the load. Online or double-conversion systems are used in data-centre environments where tight control is required.

In an online, continuous or double-conversion VFI system, the load is supplied through the inverter continuously. ENERGY STAR describes this arrangement as having no transfer time when the input power fails. Actual performance still depends on the complete installation, including bypass equipment, controls and downstream distribution.

What “battery runtime” really means

Battery runtime is a design target, not a universal data-centre standard. ENERGY STAR describes typical UPS battery support as lasting from seconds to tens of minutes—long enough for emergency generators to come online or for computing equipment to shut down properly. A facility may specify a different period because of generator start time, transfer sequencing, load-shedding logic, maintenance practice or the recovery behaviour of its applications.

Do not describe a particular number of minutes as “the” required runtime without the facility’s electrical design. Runtime changes with the connected kW load, battery condition, ambient conditions, the UPS configuration and whether noncritical loads are disconnected during an outage.

What generators contribute

Generators are the long-duration source in the normal UPS-generator arrangement. They burn fuel to produce electricity after the utility source fails, then continue as long as they can safely operate and receive fuel.

Start, transfer and stabilisation

  1. A monitoring system detects loss of utility power or an unacceptable voltage condition.
  2. The UPS immediately supports the protected load from stored energy.
  3. The generator controller starts the engine and brings the alternator to acceptable operating conditions.
  4. Transfer equipment connects the generator to the designated distribution path.
  5. The UPS continues regulating the load while the generator carries the facility’s selected circuits.
  6. When utility power is stable again, the controls transfer back according to the site’s approved sequence, allow the generator to cool down, and return it to standby.

The exact timing and sequence are site-specific. A generator’s advertised electrical rating does not by itself prove that it can start the facility’s motors, support cooling equipment or handle nonlinear IT loads during transfer.

Endurance depends on operations

How long generator backup lasts depends on capacity and condition, the loads being served, fuel stored on site and the ability to replenish that fuel. Microsoft cites on-site generators for extended outages and planned maintenance and contracts with local vendors for emergency fuel delivery. That is one operator’s strategy, not a universal fuel type, tank size or hours-of-operation rule.

An engineered plan should identify the critical loads that must remain powered, the loads that can be shed, the fuel monitoring and replenishment process, access arrangements during severe weather, and the tests that prove the transfer sequence works under load.

How to choose the UPS and generator arrangement

The DOE recommends evaluating equipment type, capacity and quantity, required power conditioning, redundancy and required uptime during an outage. The following sequence turns those criteria into a practical design brief.

1. Establish the protected load

Measure the real and apparent power of the equipment that must remain online, including servers, storage, network devices, control systems and any cooling or safety systems connected to the emergency path. Record present demand, starting currents, power factor, expected growth and which circuits can be shed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not size from the nameplate total alone or from a nominal rack count. The UPS, generator, switchgear and conductors must each be compatible with the actual electrical characteristics of the load and with the required expansion margin.

2. Define the continuity objective

Decide whether the site must continue operating through a utility interruption, shut down cleanly after a short bridge period, or support maintenance without interruption. That decision determines the required battery bridge, generator start strategy, bypass arrangements and degree of redundancy.

3. Select the topology and capacity

Choose VFD, VI or VFI according to the required conditioning and continuity. Match the UPS design range to its expected operating load. A unit that is chronically lightly loaded can operate inefficiently, while a unit with no headroom may be unable to accept growth or a sudden load step.

Where the load is below the initial design point or is expected to grow, modular UPS equipment can add capacity in increments. Modularity can improve how closely installed capacity tracks IT growth, but it does not automatically create independent power paths; shared controls, switchgear or bypass equipment can remain common points.

4. Set the battery bridge target

Use the generator’s measured start-and-transfer performance, the desired orderly-shutdown window and the critical-load profile to set the battery target. Verify the result at the expected load rather than relying on an unloaded or laboratory runtime figure. Include battery ageing and maintenance assumptions in the acceptance criteria.

5. Size and connect the generator

Confirm that the generator can support the emergency load, including the starting behaviour of cooling and mechanical equipment. Define which loads start first, which are delayed, and which are shed if the generator approaches its limit. The generator path should be coordinated with breakers, transfer equipment, UPS bypasses and protective settings.

6. Decide the redundancy model

Specify the failures the site must tolerate: one UPS module, one generator, one distribution component, a maintenance event or loss of an entire utility path. Then draw the physical paths to every critical load and mark shared switchboards, controls, transformers and PDUs. A label such as “N+1” is not sufficient until those connections are visible.

Understanding N+1, 2N and independent paths

N is the minimum capacity needed to carry the defined load. N+1 adds one extra capacity unit or component, so the required load can still be served after one comparable unit fails or is removed for maintenance. 2N provides two complete capacity paths, each intended to carry the required load.

Arrangement What it aims to provide Questions that decide the real resilience
N Exactly the capacity required for the design load. What happens during a failure or planned maintenance of any single component?
N+1 One additional unit beyond the required capacity. Are the units genuinely independent, or do they share an upstream UPS, switchboard, transformer, control system or PDU?
2N Two complete capacity paths, normally capable of carrying the required load independently. Can the IT equipment receive both paths, and can either path be maintained without interruption?
Enhanced N+1 More discrete paths than a conventional N+1 layout, without necessarily duplicating every element. Which specific failure modes are removed, and what extra infrastructure and operating complexity are introduced?

NVIDIA’s DGX H100 design guidance illustrates why the label must be tested against the physical arrangement. It describes facility-level UPS and generator backup, compares 2N, N+1 and an enhanced N+1 arrangement with three discrete UPS paths, and warns that a shared upstream source in one N+1 layout leaves a common failure exposure. Its conclusion is specific to DGX H100 system racks: conventional 2N is described as sufficient for management racks but not for those system racks. It should not be generalized to every data centre or workload.

When reviewing a redundancy drawing, ask five questions:

  • How many independent power paths reach the load?
  • Which components or paths share upstream switchgear, UPS equipment or distribution?
  • Can planned maintenance occur without interrupting the protected load?
  • Which single failures does the design actually tolerate?
  • Can the workload use both paths, or does a server’s internal design make one path effectively dominant?

Efficiency, loading and operating cost

Resilience has an energy cost. Conversion losses in UPS equipment, lightly loaded modules and unnecessary parallel capacity all affect the facility’s electrical consumption.

ENERGY STAR states that electrical distribution losses can account for an average 10% to 12% of total data-centre energy. It also reports that ENERGY STAR-certified UPS models may reduce energy losses by 30% to 55% compared with standard products, and gives a stated efficiency range of 92% to 95% for new energy-efficient UPSs. These are general guidance figures, not measurements for a particular installation; efficiency varies with load and operating mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some UPS systems offer eco or bypass modes. ENERGY STAR says such modes may reduce data-centre energy costs by 2% to 8% in some circumstances, with a performance or reliability trade-off that varies by vendor and operating conditions. A site should only enable a mode after confirming its voltage and transfer tolerances, monitoring, maintenance procedure and risk acceptance.

The practical objective is not maximum nameplate capacity. It is the lowest-loss design that still provides the required conditioning, growth margin, maintenance capability and failure tolerance.

Maintenance, testing and monitoring

Backup power is an operating programme, not a one-time equipment purchase. Microsoft’s description includes routine UPS and generator maintenance and testing, monitoring, multiple utility feeds and emergency fuel arrangements.

  • UPS: follow the manufacturer’s inspection, battery and capacitor-maintenance instructions; review alarms, bypass status, temperature and load balance.
  • Batteries: trend condition and replace units according to measured condition and the manufacturer’s service guidance rather than assuming the original runtime remains available indefinitely.
  • Generators: exercise the start, transfer and return sequence under an approved test plan; verify fuel quality, starting systems, cooling and emissions or safety controls applicable at the site.
  • Distribution: test breakers, transfer switches, protective settings, interlocks and alternate paths, including the components that are shared by supposedly redundant systems.
  • Monitoring: alarm on utility quality, UPS state, battery condition, generator status, fuel level, load and temperature, with escalation routes that are staffed during an incident.

Testing should demonstrate the complete chain, not merely prove that a generator engine starts in isolation. A successful test must show that the intended critical load remains within acceptable voltage and frequency limits throughout detection, UPS support, generator start, transfer and return to normal service.

Small server rooms versus engineered data centres

A rack-mount UPS can be appropriate for a small server room, laboratory or network closet when the connected load, runtime and electrical installation are known. ENERGY STAR covers products ranging from rack-mounted units to large freestanding systems. The same sizing disciplines still apply: calculate the actual load, define the bridge period, check available circuits and plan battery replacement.

A retail rack unit is not a substitute for a facility-scale engineered system. Larger installations require coordinated switchgear, generators, distribution, cooling, controls, fire and safety systems, commissioning and maintenance. Do not select a capacity or runtime from a generic “server-room battery backup” label without load data and an electrical review.

Common design mistakes and their fixes

Assuming the UPS should run for hours

Why it fails: the battery system becomes expensive and may still not cover the outage strategy or cooling requirements.

Calling a shared source redundant

Why it fails: two downstream modules can still lose power when one upstream switchboard, bypass or transformer fails.

Fix: trace each physical path from source to load and record every common component.

Buying capacity without a load model

Why it fails: the system may run inefficiently at light load or lack headroom for starting currents and growth.

Fix: measure kW and kVA, model load steps, identify shed loads and state the growth margin in the design basis.

Testing only the engine

Why it fails: a working generator does not prove that detection, UPS bypass, transfer controls, breakers and downstream PDUs will operate correctly.

Fix: test the complete sequence under an approved load and document the results.

Treating published runtime as permanent

Why it fails: runtime changes with load, age, temperature, maintenance and battery condition.

Fix: monitor battery health, verify runtime against the required bridge and include replacement criteria in the operating plan.

What the design brief should contain

Before equipment is specified, document:

  • Normal and emergency loads in kW and kVA, including starting and nonlinear-load characteristics.
  • Critical, delayable and shed-able circuits.
  • Required continuity, shutdown and maintenance objectives.
  • UPS topology, capacity, modularity and battery bridge target.
  • Generator capacity, start sequence, transfer logic and fuel replenishment arrangements.
  • Physical power-path diagrams showing every shared component.
  • Failure scenarios covered by N, N+1, 2N or any enhanced arrangement.
  • Efficiency assumptions, operating modes and acceptable trade-offs.
  • Inspection, testing, monitoring, staffing and emergency response responsibilities.
  • Local code, permitting, environmental and safety constraints, confirmed by qualified facilities engineers.

For high-density compute systems, use the current electrical design documentation for the specific equipment and have the complete installation reviewed by qualified electrical and facilities professionals. No generic article can determine the correct UPS capacity, battery runtime, generator size or redundancy tier for an unspecified site.
