There is no single strongest screw for every job. The right choice depends on the force the connection must resist, the materials and geometry involved, how the screw is installed, and the conditions it will face. For wood construction, compare product-specific capacity for the relevant failure mode—not an isolated strength number.
What does “strongest” mean for a screw?
A screw connection can fail in different ways, so its strength is not one interchangeable rating. In wood fastening, the main checks may include:
- Lateral capacity: resistance to force acting across the screw, such as when connected members try to slide past one another.
- Withdrawal capacity: resistance to a force pulling the screw out along its length.
- Head pull-through: resistance to the screw head pulling through the attached material.
The American Wood Council’s Connection Calculator addresses lateral and withdrawal capacity. Its 2025 update added head pull-through calculations for nails and wood screws. Use the mode that matches the force in the actual connection; a high rating in one mode does not establish performance in another. American Wood Council Connection Calculator
How to compare screws for the same job
Compare candidate screws only when the application and assumptions are aligned. A load figure from a different wood species, member layout, or failure mode is not a valid head-to-head comparison.

- DIMENSIONS & SUPERIOR STRENGTH: Thread Diameter 0.25" - Head Diameter 0.55" - Length 3" - Use with T30 Star Bit. Crafted from heat treated steel, LIONMAX heavy duty lag screws offer unmatched strength and reliability for long-lasting woodworking projects
- ANTI-CORROSION COATINGS: The lag screws passed the 1000 Hour Salt Spray Test without coating failures. They come with double coatings that feature excellent protection against corrosion and rust, making them long-lasting even in harsh conditions
- KNURL THREAD & SELF-TAPPING: The knurled shank significantly reduce drill torque requirements, and the deep, sharp threads allow easy drilling into the wood without damage. The type 17 notched extra sharp point makes screwing a breeze, reducing the need for pre-drilling and saving you time and effort
- MODIFIED TRUSS WASHER HEAD & STAR DRIVE: The modified truss washer head design of structural lag screw provides a flush and neat finish, enhancing the overall appearance of your woodworking creations. Featuring a T30 star drive style, these wood screws enable safe and efficient fastening without slipping
- WIDE APPLICATIONS: LIONMAX lag screw bolts are ideal for outdoor, home and industrial applications such as deck building, log construction, timber framing, laminated beams and pole barns
- Define the connection and force. Identify the materials being joined, how the members are arranged, and whether the important demand is lateral, withdrawal, pull-through, or a combination.
- Match the product data. Use the manufacturer’s load tables or technical documentation for the specific screw and connection. Check the assumed wood species or substrate and member geometry.
- Check the dimensions and layout. Diameter, length, penetration, spacing, and distances to edges and ends can affect capacity. Use the values and limitations specified for the product and design method.
- Confirm design conditions. Load duration, installation conditions, and other stated adjustment assumptions matter. Do not transfer a rating from one set of conditions to another.
- Choose material and finish for exposure. Confirm that the screw’s steel or other material and its coating suit the environment. Exterior-grade products and stainless-steel options for severe saltwater exposure address corrosion resistance; neither category is a universal strength ranking.
- Follow the installation requirements. Check required tools, predrilling, placement, and other instructions, along with current code listing or evaluation documentation where applicable.
For a wood connection, the American Wood Council calculator is based on the 2024 National Design Specification (NDS). It can help evaluate a designed connection, but the applicable code adoption and the actual assembly still govern. AWC Connection Calculator
Why installation details can determine the result
Capacity data applies to specified fasteners installed in the stated arrangement. Changing the screw type, size, material, finish, number, or placement can change the connection. Simpson Strong-Tie cautions: “Incorrect fastener quantity, size, placement, type, material, or finish may cause the connection to fail.” Follow the connector and fastener instructions as a system rather than substituting a screw based on appearance or a headline rating. - INDUSTRIAL-GRADE DURABILITY: Crafted from carbon steel, LIONMAX wood screws withstand heavy loads and resist bending or shearing, providing rock-solid stability in wood structures like decks, sheds, or outdoor furniture
- ANTI-CORROSION COATINGS: Construction lag wood screws passed the 1000 Hour Salt Spray Test. The black coating offers excellent protection against corrosion and rust, allowing them to be used even in humid climates, rainy environments, or salt-air coastal areas
- STAR DRIVE FLAT HEAD DESIGN: The T30 star drive design provides a secure grip, preventing unwanted slippage and stripping. Flat Countersunk Head sits flush with surfaces for safety and aesthetics, ideal for applications like flooring and trim work
- EASY TO INSTALL: The knurled shank and sharp threads of the structural screws greatly reduce drill torque requirements, allowing for easy drilling into wood without causing any damage. The type 17 notched extra sharp point makes pre-drilling unnecessary
- PACKAGE: #14 x 2-7/8 Inch Structural Wood Screws 50 Pieces, T30 Star Drive Bit Included. LIONMAX timber screws are neatly arranged in a container for easy storage, with a clear label for quick identification
Structural wood screws are a category, not a universal winner
For wood construction, load-rated structural wood screws are the relevant category to investigate when a connection requires documented capacity. Manufacturer product families include exterior-grade timber screws and multi-ply truss screws intended for particular construction uses. Those examples do not establish that one model is strongest overall; select by the product’s rated application and stated conditions. Do not treat ordinary wood screws, structural wood screws, self-tapping lag screws, and metal self-drilling screws as interchangeable. The AWC notes that the NDS does not specifically cover self-tapping lag screws or provide their withdrawal and lateral design values. Where a product falls outside a standard’s prescriptive coverage, evidence of satisfactory performance for the intended use is needed. AWC FAQ

When to get design guidance
For a structural or code-governed connection, use product-specific load tables and the applicable design standard, or consult a qualified design professional. The 2018 NDS discussion of combined loading illustrates why a connection may need more than one capacity check; it should not be treated as a statement of current local code adoption. AWC 2018 NDS Chapter 11
To browse options, search for load-rated structural wood screws, then verify the specific screw’s documentation against your material, connection layout, load, installation requirements, and exposure. A product label or retailer description alone is not a substitute for applicable capacity data.
