Results depend on the coating and substrate, abrasive designed for wet use, grit sequence, pressure, and careful inspection. Wood finish sanding and automotive clear-coat correction use different procedures, so treat them as separate workflows.
Why wet sanding can improve a finish
Water or an appropriate lubricant helps carry away loose abrasive and finish particles. That can reduce paper loading and the visibility of sanding scratches: Wood Magazine’s wet-sanding guidance describes lubrication as a way to reduce scratches, while 3M’s Wetordry sheet listing says water can reduce clogging and extend abrasive life.
Those benefits do not mean every material or coating should be sanded wet. Follow the coating maker’s instructions and use an abrasive explicitly intended for wet or damp sanding. Keep water away from materials or assemblies that could be damaged by moisture.
Choose the abrasive and grit for the job
Use waterproof wet/dry paper or a product specified for the process. 3M Wetordry 401Q is a silicon-carbide abrasive sheet with waterproof A-weight backing, described for fine, light-touch auto-body wet sanding and paint finishing. The product page lists grades up to 3000 grit. Another 3M Wetordry sheet listing describes wet/dry silicon-carbide use and advises not skipping more than one grit in a sequence.

- Wide Variety of Grit - Perfect selection of different grits, Including 5 sheets of each grit: 400/ 600/ 800/ 1000/ 1200/ 1500/ 2000/ 2500/ 3000, total 45 sheets.
- Suits Your Needs Perfectly - Wet and dry sandpaper, great assortment of fine to superfine sandpaper, you can use fine grit sandpaper for fine woodworking, cleaning and polishing metal, sanding clay, wood furniture finishing, wood turning finishing, automotive jobs and more.
- Handy Sizes - Silicon carbide sandpaper size 9 x 3.6 inches, It can be easily cut and folded to fit any hand tool or work piece crevice.
- High Quality Sandpaper - Made of waterproof silicon carbide, electro coated, It works well dry and wet sanding. Each product we need to do 100% quality-check before shipping to ensure the paper not easily fall off when in use.
- Easy to Identify - Good variety of grits from coarse to smooth, so you have a good choice to fit any type of projects, the grit is on the back of sandpaper for easy identification.
Grit is workflow-specific, not a universal recipe. Wood Magazine’s cured wood-finish example uses 1000, then 1500, then 2000 grit. For a large automotive repair, 3M describes removing defects with P1500 or P2000 before refining those scratches with 3000-grade abrasive. Do not transfer one sequence to a different coating or defect without checking its instructions.
Hand-sanding a cured wood finish
Wood Magazine describes wet sanding cured finish coats by hand with wet/dry paper, a rubber sanding block, and a clean detergent-water solution. The lubricant keeps the paper and surface wet during sanding; the article’s described schedule calls for allowing two days after a later coat for the film to dry before final sanding. That timing belongs to its example, not every finish product.

- Multi-Stage Sandpaper Assortment: This Shineboc 9x3.6 inch sandpaper pack includes 21 sheets with 7 grits (120/220/400/600/800/1000/2000), 3 sheets per grit, suitable for all sanding stages from rough to fine
- Premium Material: Crafted from high-quality silicon carbide, it is electrostatically coated to ensure an uniform distribution of grit. This results in long-lasting performance and high resistance to damage
- Wet and Dry Use: It can be utilized for both wet and dry sanding. Wet sanding helps reduce the occurrence of scratches and minimizes dust emissions, while dry sanding offers faster material removal and convenience
- Anti-Clogging: With excellent anti-clogging properties, it resists the accumulation of dust and debris. This guarantees a sharp cutting edge and less frequent replacement
- Tear-Resistant: A reinforced backing layer is incorporated, which prevents the sanding sheets from tearing under high pressure or when used on irregular surfaces
- Confirm the finish is cured enough to sand and that its manufacturer permits this approach.
- Use the wet/dry paper and detergent solution, keeping the abrasive wet as Wood Magazine’s method describes.
- Sand evenly with the block, using light, controlled pressure. Avoid cutting through the finish, especially at edges.
- Wipe the surface dry periodically so you can inspect it. In the cited method, stop when the surface has a uniform dull sheen.
- For Wood Magazine’s specific finish schedule, progress from 1000 to 1500 to 2000 grit, then buff with a soft cloth.
Do not assume that the stated drying period, grit sequence, or stopping point applies to another coating. Follow that product’s cure and finishing directions.
Refining automotive paint and clear coat
Automotive clear-coat correction is a separate, product-specific process. In its large-area procedure, 3M describes removing defects with P1500 or P2000 abrasive and refining the sanding marks with 3000-grade foam abrasive on a dual-action sander with an interface pad.

- Wet & Dry Use: Designed for both wet sanding paper (reduces dust, extends lifespan) and dry sanding (quick material removal). Perfect for automotive refinishing, wood furniture refinishing, and DIY projects.
- Ergonomic & Contours Easily: The sanding block shape fits comfortably in hand, while the flexible foam adapts to curves and tight corners, ensuring even sanding on flat or irregular surfaces.
- Wide Professional & DIY Applications: Whether you're polishing drywall, smoothing wood furniture, or prepping metal/auto surfaces, these sanding sponges are essential for craftsmen, carpenters, and home renovators.
For that refinement stage, 3M specifies spraying water on the abrasive and surface, keeping the area damp rather than wet, and using medium pressure with 5–6 overlapping passes until a light slurry covers the repair area. The procedure then moves to polishing. A damp instruction is not interchangeable with a wet-sanding instruction.
3M’s spot-repair procedure also calls for damp 3000-grade Trizact refinement, followed by cleaning and inspection before polishing. Mirka’s automotive spot-repair guide describes a different workflow using water with its specified Iridium SR abrasive and cleaning with a microfiber cloth between steps. Do not mix products or steps from these procedures into an improvised recipe.

Inspect between stages
Water and slurry can obscure defects while sanding. Pause to clean and dry the surface as appropriate for the product instructions, then inspect under good light before advancing to a finer abrasive or polishing. Automotive procedures specifically place cleaning and checking between scratch refinement and polishing; on wood, periodic dry inspections help prevent removing more finish than intended.
If scratches remain, first check whether they are remnants of the previous grit or deeper defects in the coating. Changing grit or pressure without identifying the cause can leave a new scratch pattern or remove too much material. Stop if the finish is breaking through, the substrate is exposed, or the abrasive is behaving unlike the product instructions describe.
