Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If your Westinghouse WGen9500 will not start, shuts down, loses power, or bogs under load, begin with the symptom and the basic checks in the owner’s manual. WGen9500, WGen9500c, WGen9500DFc, and other suffix variants can have different controls and fuel systems, so check the rating label and follow the manual for your exact unit before changing settings or attempting a repair.
Use these checks as a starting point, not as a substitute for the generator’s safety instructions. Stop if a control is unfamiliar or a fault persists; the manual directs several fuel, ignition, valve, and generator problems to customer service.
Engine will not start
The WGen9500/WGen9500c manual identifies several possible causes, from a switched-off battery to fuel, oil, choke, or ignition issues. Work through only the checks that match your model and its controls.
- Battery switch: Check that it is on. If the battery is drained, the manual lists using the recoil handle as an alternative starting method.
- Fuel: Check the level and condition. Refuel if empty; if fuel is stale or contaminated, drain it and replace it with fresh gasoline as directed by the manual.
- Air filter: Clean a dirty filter following the model’s instructions.
- Low-oil indication: If the low-oil LED is illuminated, switch the battery switch off and add engine oil as directed in the manual.
- Choke: Check the choke position for your exact configuration. The manual notes that a weak or disconnected battery can affect choke position.
- Spark plug or flooding: For a flooded engine, the manual says to wait five minutes, turn the battery switch off, then pull the recoil handle rapidly several times. If it still will not start, remove and dry the spark plug. For a faulty, fouled, or incorrectly gapped plug, follow the manual’s gapping or replacement instructions.
Before buying a replacement spark plug, verify the part number and specifications against the manual for your exact model suffix; the troubleshooting guidance does not establish one plug as compatible with every WGen9500 variant. If the fuel system or ignition appears to be malfunctioning, contact Westinghouse support rather than guessing at parts or repeatedly trying to start the unit. Westinghouse support

Engine starts, then shuts down
The WGen9500/WGen9500c troubleshooting table lists these possible causes and responses:
- Fuel depletion: Refuel.
- Incorrect oil level: Check the oil and correct the level according to the manual.
- Dirty air filter: Clean the filter as directed.
- Contaminated fuel: Drain it and refill with fresh gasoline following the manual.
- Defective low-oil switch: The manual directs this fault to customer service.
Engine lacks power
A restricted air filter or bad or stale fuel can reduce engine power. The manual recommends cleaning or replacing the filter as appropriate and draining bad fuel before refilling with fresh gasoline. If the problem points to a fuel-system, ignition, or valve fault, use customer service rather than attempting an unlisted repair.

Engine runs rough or bogs when load is applied
First distinguish a generator problem from a load problem. The manual lists a dirty air filter, overload, a faulty connected tool or appliance, and fuel-system, ignition, or valve faults as possible causes.
- Clean the air filter according to the manual.
- If the generator is overloaded, unplug some devices and reduce the connected load.
- If one tool or appliance appears faulty, disconnect it. Repair or replace that equipment as appropriate, then stop and restart the generator following its manual.
- If rough running continues after those checks, contact service about a possible fuel-system, ignition, or valve problem.

Use Westinghouse’s support resources for the correct manual and service information. Escalate persistent fuel-system, ignition, valve, low-oil-switch, or generator faults rather than repeatedly restarting the unit or replacing parts without confirming the fault. The WGen9500 product page identifies its rated output as 12,500 peak watts and 9,500 running watts; those are product specifications, not evidence of reliability or of any particular troubleshooting outcome.
