The available reporting documents a planned rehabilitation of West Washington Street in Indianapolis, not a celebration by neighbors. A May 13, 2025 article from Merchants West describes a $40 million project along 1.5 miles of the corridor, from Lynhurst Drive to Holt Road. It does not identify a celebration, say when one occurred, or establish that residents celebrated the construction.
What the reported West Washington Street project includes
Merchants West reported that the Indianapolis Department of Public Works would lead a rehabilitation intended to address crumbling pavement, missing sidewalks, drainage problems and unsafe crossings. The article describes planned work, not confirmation that construction has been completed.

- Rebuild the pavement.
- Add ADA-compliant sidewalks and multi-use paths.
- Install traffic signals and other safety features.
- Improve drainage.
- Select either a three-lane or five-lane configuration, depending on traffic flow and neighborhood needs.
The May 2025 article does not provide a final lane design, current schedule or subsequent construction update. Its description therefore cannot establish the project’s present status or whether the proposed features have been built.

What is known about neighbors’ reaction
The reporting does not verify that neighbors celebrated the project or explain what a celebration might have involved. It would be inaccurate to treat the title’s wording as evidence of an event or to attribute a shared reaction to residents.

City-County Councilor Jared Evans voiced support for the investment, saying, “This is something our side of town has needed for a long time.” He described the project as being about “safety, walkability, and restoring pride in our neighborhoods.” That is Evans’s stated view; the quotation does not establish how neighbors generally felt.
What to verify for current project status
The Merchants West article is dated May 13, 2025, and describes the project as planned. It says the Indianapolis Department of Public Works would lead construction and that Merchants West intended to provide updates to businesses and neighbors. Those statements do not confirm a current construction timeline. For the latest schedule, design and completion information, consult current updates from the city’s Department of Public Works.
