Fallen fruit beneath trees can give rats an accessible food source. Pick up fruit as it drops, and check the rest of the yard for spilled birdseed, exposed animal feed, food scraps, and unsecured garbage. Cleanup can reduce available food, but it cannot guarantee rats will stay away.

Why fallen fruit matters

Ripe fruit that drops to the ground may attract rats, according to University of Florida IFAS. Oregon State University Extension also includes picking up fallen fruit among its recommendations for reducing food sources around a home. Fruit is one possible attractant, not proof that rats are present or the sole cause of an infestation.

What to clear or secure around the yard

Collect fruit as it falls

Check beneath fruit trees regularly and remove fallen or rotting fruit rather than leaving it on the ground. Put collected fruit in a secure waste or compost system so it does not remain accessible.

Clean up birdseed

Spilled seed can also provide food. Prevent spills where possible, place feeders where rats have less access, and consider a feeder designed to catch dropped seed. Rake up seed that reaches the ground. See Oregon State University Extension’s guidance on rats, bird feeders, and animal food.

Secure feed, compost, and garbage

Do not leave pet or other animal food accessible. Store garbage in secure containers, and avoid putting food scraps in open compost piles. Oregon State University Extension recommends hot composting or using a contained system; its broader rat-management guidance also addresses sanitation and shelter reduction.

Reduce hiding places and keep up the routine

Food is only one part of rat management. Reduce places where rats can hide, and continue removing accessible food rather than treating a one-time cleanup as a guarantee. Nearby conditions also matter, so a tidy yard may lower food availability without eliminating the possibility of rat activity.

If rats are already active

Traps and bait are control measures, distinct from preventing access to food and shelter. Oregon State University Extension advises using them cautiously and says they are most effective for small populations; a larger infestation may call for a licensed professional. As OSU Extension wildlife specialist Dana Sanchez puts it, “Simply putting down a trap and expecting a rat to fall into it won’t work.”
