2nd Street NE remains closed beside the AirStay hotel construction site in downtown Watertown, South Dakota. The latest project update says the road will stay closed through October for construction staging; a full reopening is expected in late spring, but no specific date has been confirmed.
Where 2nd Street NE is closed
The closure is in front of the AirStay hotel construction site, on the former City Hall site. In its July 10, 2026 notice, the City of Watertown described the affected section as running from 1st Avenue NE to approximately mid-block and said construction was scheduled to resume the week of July 13. Why the street remains closed
In an update reported October 6–7, the project team said 66-foot roof trusses require a crane and street staging. After the trusses are installed, work is expected to move to sheeting, enclosing the building, and mechanical rough-ins for electrical, plumbing and elevators. The city manager said the road would remain closed for public safety at least through the balance of October. Watertown Current report
Further temporary closures are also expected as construction materials and contractor vehicles are moved into the parking garage.

When is the road expected to reopen?
Casey Olivier, representing Prairie Pro, said the project team remained on schedule and was thinking of a late-spring full opening of the road. That is an expectation, not a confirmed reopening date or formal completion commitment. Olivier also said Prairie Pro’s contract with the city technically runs through November 2027; that contract end date does not establish when the street will reopen. Watertown Current report
Could the road open for holiday traffic?
The project team was exploring ways to accommodate Thanksgiving traffic and Watertown’s Black Friday lighted holiday parade. Options discussed included opening part of the closure or allowing two lanes, but no holiday traffic plan had been confirmed in the latest reports. Drivers should rely on city announcements and signs rather than assume access will be restored for those events.

What drivers should do
- Use alternate routes and exercise caution near the construction area, as the city advised in its July notice.
- Follow current signs and traffic directions. The July notice does not identify a current detour route.
- Check for city updates before traveling through downtown, especially around holiday events, since the extent of the closure and any temporary access changes may change.
