Watch UMaine’s Large-Scale 3D Printers in Action: What They Make and How They Work

UMaine’s 2024 Factory of the Future 1.0 is distinct from its earlier MasterPrint. Here are their stated capabilities, the vessels made by the research program and what remains under evaluation.

UMaine’s Factory of the Future 1.0 (FoF 1.0) is a large-scale thermoplastic manufacturing system announced in 2024, designed for parts up to 96 feet long, 32 feet wide and 18 feet high. The university says it can deposit material at up to 500 pounds per hour and combine printing with other manufacturing operations. Those figures describe announced capabilities—not a demonstrated part made at maximum size or speed. The earlier Ingersoll MasterPrint is a separate machine, and the boats associated with UMaine’s program show how the technology has been applied over time.

What you are seeing when UMaine’s printer operates

UMaine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center (ASCC) uses large-scale additive manufacturing to make substantial polymer parts. Instead of building an object from a small spool of filament, the system deposits thermoplastic material in much larger quantities. The resulting process is suited to research into large structures and components, including marine applications.

The title’s “world’s largest” wording needs a date and a definition. UMaine described its Ingersoll MasterPrint 3x as a world-record polymer printer when it was unveiled in 2019. FoF 1.0, introduced in 2024, is a newer system with a larger announced design envelope. These are university descriptions of the machines and their capabilities; they do not establish an independent, current ranking across every printer worldwide.

FoF 1.0 is a hybrid manufacturing system

FoF 1.0 is not limited to printing. UMaine describes it as a system that can switch among large-scale additive manufacturing, subtractive manufacturing, continuous tape layup and robotic-arm operations. Additive manufacturing builds material up; subtractive work removes material to shape or finish a part. Tape layup and robotic operations add other ways to create or handle structures.

The university also says FoF 1.0 and the MasterPrint can share end-effectors or work on the same part. That offers a path to combining processes, but it is a stated system capability rather than evidence that every workflow or finished part has been validated for commercial production.

UMaine’s current MasterPrint page gives conflicting throughput figures, so its rate cannot be compared reliably here with FoF 1.0’s announced maximum of up to 500 pounds per hour. The latter is a design capability reported by the university, not a claim that a particular job continuously printed at that rate.

What the printers have made

3Dirigo demonstrated the earlier machine’s scale

UMaine says the original 3Dirigo was printed in 2019 using the earlier system. The university reports that the boat measured 25 feet long, weighed 5,000 pounds and took 72 hours to print. UMaine attributed records for the largest 3D-printed boat and largest 3D-printed object to 3Dirigo.

3Dirigo X is a newer maritime milestone

In August 2026, UMaine reported launching 3Dirigo X, a 30-foot vessel designed and manufactured at the ASCC for offshore conditions and speeds approaching 40 knots. The university said printing capability had risen from about 20 pounds per hour when its research began to about 500 pounds per hour at the time of the report, attributing the change to advances in materials, digital design, sensors and controls. This is a university-reported figure, not an independently verified benchmark.

The launch started further evaluation, not a declaration of proven long-term service. UMaine said the vessel would be assessed for performance, durability and suitability in Atlantic waters. Its account also identifies repeatability, inspectability and affordability as important questions for broader use. Cox Marine supplied the engine, while Tideman Marine supported outfitting and launch preparation.

Materials, applications and what remains to be established

UMaine’s work includes renewable feedstocks derived from Maine wood residuals and other bio-based materials. The ASCC lists marine, defense, housing, renewable energy and transportation among its application areas; it also describes BioHome3D as a house made from bio-based, wood-residual and recyclable materials. These are research and application areas, not proof that every proposed use is commercially mature or that a particular feedstock is available for consumers to buy.

FoF 1.0’s size and rate figures, the boats, and the material examples come from UMaine and its ASCC. The available institutional accounts establish neither independent performance testing nor a commercial price or public visitor schedule. They also do not identify what a particular live demonstration video shows, so the exact motions or operations in any footage depend on the footage itself.
