The company says NEO can perform tasks it already knows, while a remotely connected 1X Expert can guide it through unfamiliar work so the robot can learn to repeat it later.
That makes NEO an ambitious early-access platform rather than a proven household appliance. 1X is taking deposits and advertising U.S. deliveries from 2026, but independent customers have not yet established how often the robot succeeds, needs intervention, or copes with the unpredictability of an ordinary home.

What the NEO video shows
The official NEO product page and keynote video show a bipedal robot designed to operate in a domestic environment. Demonstrated or described tasks include putting away dishes, tidying and cleaning, handling laundry-related work, responding to a door, vacuuming and watering plants.
NEO is also presented as a conversational assistant. 1X says it can answer questions, discuss recipes and offer advice while moving around the home and helping with chores.

Those demonstrations are useful evidence of what 1X is trying to make NEO do. They are not independent tests of reliability. The footage does not establish a household-wide success rate, how often a person intervenes, how NEO recovers from mistakes, or whether it can repeat the task safely in a cluttered, unfamiliar home.
What NEO is
NEO is 1X Technologies’ consumer-oriented humanoid robot. Unlike a factory robot built for a fixed workstation, it is intended to use human-designed spaces, manipulate household objects and perform a changing range of domestic tasks.
1X launched NEO pre-orders on October 28, 2025. The product remains an early-access system: a company accepting orders and planning deliveries is not the same as a generally available appliance with a long record of ordinary consumer use.

The humanoid design has a clear potential advantage. A robot with a human-like reach and body layout could, in principle, use cupboards, doors, shelves and tools without requiring a home to be redesigned around it. The disadvantage is equally clear: walking, balance, perception, dexterity, planning and safety all have to work together. A robot vacuum has a much narrower job, but that job is easier to define and evaluate.
How NEO learns a new chore
1X’s advertised learning loop is more accurately described as robot learning assisted by teleoperation than as completely independent learning.
- The owner assigns or schedules a chore.
- NEO attempts tasks covered by its existing onboard autonomy.
- If the task is unfamiliar or too difficult, the owner schedules a 1X Expert.
- The Expert remotely supervises or pilots NEO through the task.
- The resulting behavior is intended to become a repeatable capability for that robot, while accumulated experience may help improve the wider product.
1X says NEO uses Redwood AI, its generalist model for learning and repeating household tasks. Public product information does not establish exactly which skills transfer between individual robots, how quickly that transfer occurs, or how well a task learned with one plate, drawer or garment works with another.
Remote assistance is not automatically a sign that the technology is fraudulent or useless. Teleoperation can provide demonstrations, handle unusual situations and reduce the risk of a robot making a dangerous guess. But it changes the meaning of “autonomous” and raises practical questions about privacy, connectivity, staffing and operating costs.

Is a person secretly controlling it?
Not necessarily—but human assistance is openly part of the product concept. 1X says NEO is autonomous by default, while also advertising Expert Mode and the ability for owners to pilot the robot through a mobile app and VR device.

- Three models, one lightweight platform R1 Air (20 DOF, monocular camera), R1 (26 DOF, binocular camera, head+waist joints), and R1 Edu (26 DOF + SDK/API for programming). All weigh ~29kg / 123cm – one person can lift, move, and fit into a car trunk.
- Easy setup – no coding required for basic use Unbox, power on, and start. Manual teaching feature: physically pose the robot, and it replays the motion. Graphical drag-and-drop programming also available.
- More DOF = more expressive movement 26‑DOF models (R1 / R1 Edu) add head and waist articulation for smoother dance and running. For safety reasons, only basic actions are currently available; advanced movements are not yet released.
- Voice interaction + two color options Responds to English voice commands (music, conversation, photo). Choose Gold or Blue‑White with automotive‑grade gloss paint.
- R1 Edu adds open development SDK/API access for custom programming, simulation platforms, and future Unistore content downloads. Adult use only – under 18 requires adult supervision.
Therefore, a person should not automatically assume that every promotional demonstration is being secretly teleoperated. But a demonstration also should not be treated as proof that NEO can perform the same chore indefinitely without supervision. Unless 1X identifies the control method for a particular clip, the footage cannot answer that question on its own.
It helps to separate four different ideas:
- Autonomous execution: NEO performs a previously learned task without continuous steering.
- Remote supervision: a 1X Expert watches or assists when the robot encounters an unfamiliar problem.
- Remote piloting: a human directly operates NEO through an app or VR interface.
- Fleet improvement: data or experience may improve future capabilities, although the public material does not specify the exact transfer process.
Advertised specifications
The following figures come from 1X’s product and order pages. They are manufacturer specifications, not independently tested results.
| Specification | Advertised figure |
|---|---|
| Height | 5 ft 6 in |
| Weight | 66 lb (approximately 30 kg) |
| Lift capacity | 154 lb |
| Carry capacity | 55 lb |
| Arm payload | 18 lb |
| Walking speed | 1.4 m/s |
| Maximum running speed | 6.2 m/s |
| Battery | 842 Wh |
| Runtime | Approximately four hours |
| Quick charging | Six minutes per hour of runtime |
| Noise | 22 dB |
| Hands | 22 degrees of freedom per hand |
| Connectivity | Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 5G |
| Cameras | Dual 8.85 MP, 90 Hz stereo fisheye cameras |
The 154-pound lift figure should not be read as advice that NEO can safely lift a person or any arbitrary household object. Payload depends on the object, grip, posture, floor, balance and task. Likewise, the four-hour figure does not establish how long the robot will work while walking, lifting, responding to interruptions or receiving remote assistance.

Charging and everyday limitations
1X says NEO manages its battery and can plug itself in when it needs to recharge. The company advertises approximately four hours of runtime and a quick-charge rate of six minutes for each hour of runtime.
Important practical details remain unclear. The available product information does not establish how runtime changes under heavy work, what happens if NEO stops far from its charger, or whether it can dock when the route is blocked by clutter. Battery replacement procedures and costs are also not established.
Those questions matter more in a home than a headline specification does. A robot that can complete a chore but cannot recover from a blocked doorway or depleted battery may still require regular human supervision.
Safety: promising design, not a guarantee
According to 1X, NEO has a soft body using a custom 3D-lattice polymer structure, tendon-driven actuation for compliant movement, covered joints, low-inertia drives, a soft suit and shoes. The company also describes the design as having no external pinch points.
1X lists the hands as IP68-rated and the body as IP44-rated. That does not mean the entire robot is waterproof. IP44 is limited protection against solid objects and splashing water; it is not a licence to use the robot around immersion, jets or uncontrolled wet conditions.

“No pinch points” and “home-safe” are company design claims, not guarantees that a moving 66-pound robot cannot injure a person, frighten a pet or damage property. A real evaluation would need to consider stairs, thresholds, rugs, glass, sharp objects, hot surfaces, wet floors, clutter, children and pets. No independent safety record is established by the supplied material.
Can NEO cook?
1X’s product page includes cooking among its FAQ topics, but the available material does not establish that NEO can safely prepare meals independently. In particular, there is no verified basis here for assuming it can safely handle knives, boiling liquids, hot pans or open flames without supervision.
It is safer to distinguish between conversational help—such as discussing a recipe—and unsupervised physical cooking. The former is advertised; the latter remains unproven by the cited material.

NEO is equipped with cameras and microphones and connects through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 5G. Its advertised remote-control and Expert Mode features mean that privacy is not a secondary issue: the robot may need to transmit visual, audio or spatial information about the home for remote assistance or service operation.
Before ordering, a buyer should read 1X’s current privacy policy, NEO FAQ and legal terms. Key questions include when an Expert can connect, how occupants are notified, whether owners can revoke access, what data is retained, how long recordings remain available, whether information is used to train the wider fleet, and what happens if an account is compromised.
Guests and household members also deserve notice. A camera-equipped robot moving through bedrooms, offices and living areas creates a different privacy model from a fixed security camera or a robot vacuum.

The headline price is not necessarily the total cost of ownership. Internet service, electricity, insurance, repairs, replacement parts, battery service and any additional support charges may matter. 1X’s legal terms also caution that published specifications and performance information are general illustrations rather than warranties that a delivered unit will conform to every listed figure.
What remains unproven
Company demonstrations cannot establish:
- How often NEO completes a chore without intervention.
- Average task duration in ordinary homes.
- How reliably learned skills transfer to different objects and layouts.
- How NEO handles fragile items, pets, children, stairs and clutter.
- What happens during Wi-Fi, 5G, cloud-service or app outages.
- Its actual runtime during sustained household work.
- Long-term durability, maintenance requirements and repair costs.
- Whether the robot’s behavior remains predictable after software updates.
NEO Beta and NEO Gamma footage should also be treated carefully. 1X has previously shown those prototypes in its NEO Beta and NEO Gamma announcements. Earlier models can demonstrate the company’s development direction, but they are not proof of the exact capabilities or specifications of the consumer NEO.
Who should consider NEO?
NEO may interest early adopters, robotics enthusiasts, developers, researchers and households willing to fund an unfinished general-purpose platform. It may also appeal to people interested in physical assistance or accessibility, provided they understand that advertised capability is not the same as certified dependability.
Most buyers should wait if they need reliable cleaning today, cannot accept cameras or remote human access, need dependable care for children or vulnerable adults, or would find a $20,000 purchase or $499 monthly subscription financially uncomfortable.
For a single defined job, a robot vacuum, mop, lawn device or other specialized machine is likely to be easier to assess. Human housekeeping or laundry services remain better suited to delicate objects, deep cleaning and judgment-heavy work. NEO’s proposition is breadth and future potential—not demonstrated cost efficiency for each chore.
Verdict
NEO is one of the more ambitious attempts to bring a general-purpose humanoid robot into the home. The demonstrations show a machine that can walk, manipulate objects and assist with a growing set of domestic tasks. But its “learning” depends in important cases on remote human guidance, and the product’s real-world reliability, privacy practices and long-term ownership experience remain to be proven.
For an early adopter, that may be the point. For anyone looking for a dependable replacement for a cleaner or a set of household appliances, NEO is not there yet.
