Councillors called for a review in February 2025 after residents raised concerns about the new system, but that motion was not a decision to restore fixed collection dates. In March 2026, the City was reported to have retained bookable collections while continuing to refine the service.
What changed, and why did councillors call for a review?
Before July 2024, bulk waste was placed out for collection on fixed dates. Under the replacement system, residents book a pickup by waste category and choose from the available dates. The City described the change as supporting the State Government’s waste strategy through greater material recovery and less landfill. The City’s consultation page records engagement on the proposal in 2022 and early 2023; a February 2023 council decision was reported as the basis for moving to the bookable service. PerthNow’s 28 February 2025 report covered councillors’ push for a review.
Councillors Phil Bedworth and Helen Berry sought an examination of service performance, possible changes and recommendations after residents complained about booking availability, long waits and waste left on verges. Bedworth said a thorough review of the benefits and challenges of each option would help council make an informed decision. The motion sought consideration; it did not establish that council had voted to restore scheduled collections.
PerthNow also reported comments from residents describing waits of three months and rubbish remaining on verges. Those were individual accounts, not a measured average for the service.

What happened after the review?
In March 2026, PerthNow reported that the City had retained the bookable model following its first-year review, while continuing to make adjustments. The City said early problems included peak-period availability and collection limits, and that changes to booking capacity and communication had addressed some concerns. Mayor Linda Aitken described the system as delivering environmental and financial benefits for residents.
The figures below are findings attributed to the City’s first-year review and survey, as reported by PerthNow on 19 March 2026. The underlying review and survey methodology were not available in the sources reviewed, so the results cannot be independently evaluated here. They also do not amount to a controlled comparison with the former scheduled system.

- Durable Construction: Crafted from robust 2-ply paper for tear resistance and longevity
- Spacious Capacity: Holds up to 30 gallons of yard waste for fewer changes
- Self-Standing Design: Simplifies filling with a sturdy, upright shape
- Made in USA: Meets stringent quality standards for reliable performance
| First-year measure | City figures reported by PerthNow |
|---|---|
| Material collected | 7,118 tonnes, including 1,363 tonnes of green waste |
| Landfill diversion | More than 2,000 tonnes diverted from landfill |
| Collections completed | More than 40,380 collections, reported as 32.2% of households |
| Reported waiting time | Up to eight weeks during rollout, later falling to two to four weeks |
| Survey response | 74.8% of surveyed users said they were satisfied and willing to use the model again |
| Program cost | $3.51 million in total, or $42.39 per household, compared with $45.60 previously |
| Reported saving | Around $150,000 |
The reported wait figures describe the rollout and the later service figures in the City’s review; they are not a promise about the next available date for an individual booking. The City was reported as expecting a full review and community survey after July 2027.
How does the bookable system compare with fixed-date pickups?
The models trade different outcomes. A fixed schedule gives households a known date without requiring a booking, but offers less choice about when material goes out. A bookable system lets residents select an available date, but the usefulness of that flexibility depends on slots being available when needed.

| Issue | Fixed-date collections | Bookable collections |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing a date | Collection follows the published schedule. | Residents select an available date and category. |
| Wait and slot availability | Waste is tied to the next scheduled service date. | Wait depends on current category and area availability; check the live booking form. |
| Time waste sits on the verge | Depends on when residents place items out relative to the scheduled pickup. | The City permits placement only shortly before the booked pickup; see the current rules below. |
| Recovery, landfill and cost | The sources reviewed do not provide a directly comparable set of results for the former system. | The City’s first-year figures, reported by PerthNow, show diversion and cost outcomes, but are not a controlled comparison. |
| Resident experience | No directly comparable satisfaction measure is stated in the sources reviewed. | 74.8% of surveyed users said they were satisfied and willing to use the model again, according to the City survey reported by PerthNow. |
These figures support the City’s decision to retain the model, but they do not settle whether it is better for every household or every measure. The 2025 complaints concerned access and delays; the reported first-year findings emphasize recovery, cost and surveyed-user satisfaction.
How to book a Wanneroo verge collection
As of 8 October 2026, the City says the service is available to residential properties that pay a waste service fee. The live booking system shows available dates by category and area, and dates are typically a few weeks ahead. Availability changes, so use the booking form rather than treating a reported historical wait as a current estimate.

- Open the City’s Waste and recycling page and follow the current links for bulk verge collection booking and accepted items.
- Select the waste category and check the dates shown for your area. The City lists one annual collection for each of these categories: bulk junk up to 3 m³; green waste up to 3 m³; mattresses, up to three items; white goods, up to four items; and e-waste, up to six items.
- Book a date before placing anything on the verge. If you do not have mobile access, the City says you can book by calling (08) 9405 5000.
- Put items out no earlier than three days before the booked date and have them on the verge by 6am on collection day.
For white goods, appliances must be empty, and doors must be removed or securely taped shut. The City says contaminated or unsecured appliances will not be collected. Junk collections exclude items including asbestos, building materials, tyres and hazardous material. Check the City’s live accepted-item lists for the complete rules and any category-specific conditions before putting items out.
