The City announced it on 3 April 2024, days after the Mariginiup bushfire, which it said burned 1,900 hectares and destroyed 18 homes over four days. This article explains what the event offered, why the City held it, and where residents can find the current preparation guidance the City points to today.
The April 2024 event: when, where and what it offered
The event was held at the Bunnings Mindarie car park and was free to attend. Visitors could meet firefighters and emergency-services volunteers, watch demonstrations, buy a sausage sizzle and take part in children’s activities. The City presented it as part of its Prepare Together project, which provides information and resources to help the community respond to natural hazards and other major emergencies. The event announcement said it received Federal Government funding.
The event is now in the past. It was a single day, not a recurring program, and the City’s announcement does not commit it to a repeat date. Residents looking for preparation help now should use the City’s current guidance covered below.
Why the City held it: the Mariginiup bushfire
In its April 2024 announcement, Mayor Linda Aitken tied the event directly to the Mariginiup fire. The City’s figures, which come from that announcement rather than a later incident update, were:

- 1,900 hectares burned in four days
- 18 homes destroyed before firefighters contained the blaze
The Mayor’s statement read: “The recent Mariginiup bushfire showed just how quickly and easily a bushfire can spread – in just four days, the fire burned through 1,900 hectares and destroyed 18 homes before firefighters were able to contain the blaze.” She added: “With the risk of bushfires increasing, this may not be an isolated incident, but you can act now to prepare yourself, your home and your property for an emergency by taking few simple steps.”
On the scale of local exposure, the April 2024 announcement said 90% of the City’s area was bushfire-prone. The City’s current preparation page describes this as “over 90%”. When quoting either figure, keep the date and attribution: the 90% figure is the City’s 2024 statement, and the “over 90%” wording is from the current page.

- Know how you will receive warnings. Open Emergency WA for near-real-time bushfire information. The City also names ABC Radio Perth 102.5 FM as the state’s official emergency-services broadcaster and 13DFES (13 3337) for recorded local emergency information. Confirm you can reach at least two of these without mobile data or power.
- Write a household plan. The City says a plan can take as little as 15 minutes. It should cover every household member, pets and livestock, and more than one location and scenario, such as being at work or at school when a fire starts. The City links to DFES’s My Bushfire Plan tool to structure this.
- Prepare the property. Check your firebreak obligations and clear the area around the home as firebreak rules require (see the firebreak section below).
- Assemble and check an emergency survival kit. The City recommends preparing a kit and checking it regularly, and links to DFES guidance on what to carry for evacuating or staying in place. Compare any kit you buy against that DFES guidance and your household’s needs, such as medication, infants, mobility aids or pets.
Fire danger ratings and what each means for action
The City’s current preparation page explains the Australian fire danger rating levels as follows. Each level describes the action expected of residents, so check the rating for your area before any day with hot, dry or windy conditions.
| Fire danger rating | Action the City’s page describes |
|---|---|
| Moderate | Plan and prepare |
| High | Ready to act |
| Extreme | Act immediately |
| Catastrophic | Leave bushfire risk areas now for survival |
Leaving early: the City’s position
The City states that leaving early is the safest choice. It says staying to defend or shelter in place is dangerous and should be attempted only by people who are extremely well prepared. Anyone planning to stay must consider the loss of mains power and mains water, which can disable pumps, electric doors and communications at the same time a fire is approaching.
