VJS Construction is identified in the headline as having topped off Milwaukee School of Engineering’s Robert D. Kern Engineering Innovation Center in downtown Milwaukee. The exact date and ceremony details are not confirmed by accessible project records. MSOE describes a four-story, 97,000-square-foot academic building at Milwaukee and State Streets, with completion previously projected for fall 2027.
What the topping-off headline refers to
The project is MSOE’s Robert D. Kern Engineering Innovation Center, a new academic facility planned at the corners of Milwaukee and State Streets, connected to the Allen-Bradley Hall of Science and Fred Loock Engineering Center. MSOE’s project announcement describes the center as a $76.5 million, four-story building spanning 97,000 square feet, funded entirely through philanthropy. MSOE’s July 2025 announcement and project page provide the university’s project description.

In construction, “topping off” generally refers to placing the final structural element at the highest point of a building’s frame. The headline signals a major structural milestone, but the available underlying report text does not establish the event date, the specific element placed, who attended, or whether a beam-signing ceremony took place.
What is planned inside the center
MSOE says the facility is intended to support hands-on engineering education through flexible laboratories, modern classrooms, robotics- and AI-focused workshops, shared collaboration spaces, and an outdoor sustainability laboratory. A Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence Education is planned as a centerpiece, alongside an effort to integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning across engineering programs.

These are announced design and educational plans, not measured outcomes. The available MSOE materials do not report post-occupancy results or demonstrate what students will achieve once the building is operating. At the July 2025 groundbreaking, MSOE President John Y. Walz described the university’s aim: “Students will be building, testing and solving real-world problems from the moment they walk in.”
Who is building it and how construction has progressed
MSOE names VJS Construction as construction manager and Ramlow/Stein Architecture + Interiors as project developer. VJS’s September 30, 2025 project article identifies a team that includes MSOE alumni Justin Gross, Jennifer Kolp, and Jason Schneider; VJS also said it made a private gift to support the project. VJS President and CEO Craig Jorgensen said the center “will strengthen the engineering program, and, in turn, help develop future talent for the construction industry.”

- July 12, 2025: MSOE held a ceremonial groundbreaking; its announcement followed on July 14.
- November 17, 2025: MSOE reported that the first foundation had been poured.
- March 23, 2026: MSOE reported that a tower crane was in place and vertical progress was beginning. Work to that point included preparation for connections to adjacent buildings, demolition, excavation, utility work, and foundation construction.
The March 2026 update predates the topping-off headline and should not be read as a report of the building’s current structural status. MSOE and VJS previously projected completion ahead of the fall 2027 semester; the accessible materials do not confirm whether that schedule has changed.
