The cut—rotary peeling, slicing or another method—helps determine the grain pattern and sheet format. The leaves can become decorative surfaces or be assembled into products such as plywood.
What wood veneer is—and what this process covers
Wood veneer is real wood cut into thin leaves from a log or prepared flitch. A flitch is a section of a log prepared and mounted for slicing. Veneer is not printed plastic or decorative film. This article follows the industrial process that makes the leaves; applying purchased veneer to a panel or other substrate is a separate operation.
The manufacturing sequence is broadly consistent, but species, log geometry, defects, product requirements and mill equipment all affect how a particular batch is made. The USDA Forest Service’s 1974 technical paper describes itself in its foreword as “an overall view of the state of the art of veneer manufacture as seen by one who spent the last 25 years in research and industry contacts.” Its manufacturing explanations remain useful, but its period-specific figures should not be mistaken for current industry statistics.
How mills turn logs into veneer
1. Select logs and prepare them
Mills choose logs according to species, appearance and intended product. They remove bark and cut the logs into bolts or flitches suited to the cutting method. Log inspection matters: figure, defects and dimensions influence which cutting approach is practical and how much usable veneer can be recovered. The USDA Forest Service’s technical paper on veneer manufacture describes storage, debarking, bucking and flitch preparation; a Fine Woodworking account of a veneer mill discusses specialist selection and inspection.

- Unfinished Veneer Sheets for Custom Bonding: these veneer sheets do not include adhesive, allowing you to choose your preferred glue or bonding method based on your project needs and woodworking techniques
2. Condition the wood
Before cutting, a mill may heat or soak logs or flitches. This conditioning softens the wood so the knife can produce usable leaves. The right treatment depends on the species and product, so there is no single temperature or schedule that applies to every mill.
3. Cut the leaves
The two main approaches are rotary peeling and slicing. Other methods and orientations—including quarter-slicing, rift cutting, half-round cutting and sawing—produce different patterns or formats. The cutting method is one factor in appearance and yield, not a guarantee: species, log shape, defects and mill setup also matter.

4. Dry, trim and grade
Freshly cut veneer is wet. Mills dry it, clip or trim away splits and irregular edges, then grade or bundle the leaves for their intended use. Drying equipment and settings affect the leaves’ condition and flatness. A 2010 account in Fine Woodworking describes one mill reducing moisture from around 70% to about 15% in less than two minutes. That is an example from a particular sliced-leaf drying process, not a universal specification for all veneer or dryers.
How the cutting method changes the result
Cutting direction and log orientation influence grain figure and sheet format. These are general tendencies rather than fixed outcomes; species, geometry, defects and mill setup can change the result.

| Method | How it is cut | Typical appearance or use |
|---|---|---|
| Rotary | A log or bolt turns against a knife. | Can produce wide sheets; annual rings and irregular patterns may be prominent. Common in plywood and other production uses. |
| Flat or plain slicing | A prepared flitch passes a knife in successive slices. | Often used for decorative faces. Depending on log orientation, the grain may form cathedral patterns. |
| Quarter-slicing | The cut is oriented relative to the wood rays. | Often produces straighter stripes; oak may show ray figure. |
| Rift cutting | The cut angle falls between common flat- and quarter-cut orientations. | Chosen for a straighter, more uniform grain appearance. |
| Sawing | A saw cuts thicker veneer. | Less common because the saw kerf becomes sawdust; useful where thicker veneer or similar faces are desired, including some instrument wood. |
When comparing veneer options, consider grain consistency, sheet width and format, species, intended use, and any thickness or appearance requirements. Recovery also varies by technology and conditions. The ACIAR 2017 manual describes recovery below 50% in traditional production and above 60% as achievable with the newer small-log technology it discusses. Those figures describe the manual’s technologies and conditions, not a universal comparison for all mills today.
What happens to veneer after cutting?
Once dried, trimmed and graded, veneer leaves may be used as decorative faces on panels, furniture, cabinetry, doors or walls. They can also become components of veneer-based products such as plywood.

In plywood, layers are bonded with their grain directions arranged across layers. Adhesive choice and pressing belong to downstream panel manufacture: they are not part of cutting veneer from a log. The Architectural Woodwork Institute’s veneer guide outlines veneer uses, while the ACIAR manual covers rotary veneer processing and small-log production.

Historical and mill-specific figures help illustrate the process, but they cannot establish current industry-wide performance. The USDA Forest Service paper reported that 80% to 90% of all veneer was rotary cut in 1974; that is a historical estimate, not a current market-share figure. The drying example above is from one mill account, and the ACIAR recovery figures concern the technologies and conditions described in its 2017 manual. None provides a universal setting, yield or present-day production share for every species and mill.
