For the week of October 5–9, 2026, VDOT lists roadwork in Augusta, Nelson, Rockbridge and Rockingham counties, including overnight I-81 lane closures, local-road flagging and ramp restrictions. The route changes most likely to require planning are a daytime closure of Route 691 in Rockbridge County, temporary closures of the Route 250 ramps to southbound I-81 in Augusta County, and overnight closure of the I-81 Exit 243 southbound ramp in Rockingham County.
VDOT says scheduled work can change because of weather or material supplies. Check 511 Virginia before leaving for current work-zone conditions.
Closures that may require a detour
Route 691 in Rockbridge County
Route 691 (Rural Valley Road) will be closed to through traffic between Route 610 (Plank Road) and Route 609 (Red Mill Road) for bridge replacement from October 6 through October 22, 7 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Follow the posted detour.
Route 250 ramps to southbound I-81 in Augusta County
The eastbound and westbound Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) on-ramps to southbound I-81 are scheduled to close for concrete pouring from 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 6, to 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 7, and again from 6 p.m. Saturday, October 10, to 11 a.m. Sunday, October 11. Follow the posted detour. The second closure falls just after the October 5–9 workweek but is included in the schedule.

I-81 Exit 243 southbound in Rockingham County
The southbound off-ramp at Exit 243 to Route 11 (South Main Street) is scheduled to close nightly for paving, 8 p.m.–6 a.m., through the night of October 16. Follow the posted detour.
I-81 lane and shoulder work by county
Augusta County
- Mile marker 99 eastbound: shoulder closures for roadway-lighting improvements, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Monday–Friday.
- Exit 213 northbound: right-shoulder closures for off-ramp cleanup, 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday–Friday.
- Mile markers 221–227, both directions: overnight single-lane closures for pavement testing, 8 p.m.–6 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Separate southbound right-lane closures for bridge work between mile markers 223 and 221 are scheduled 8 p.m.–7 a.m. Tuesday and 6 p.m.–6:30 a.m. Saturday, October 10. The southbound Exit 221 ramp to eastbound I-64 has single-lane traffic around the clock; shoulder closures and travel-lane shifts are also listed around the clock in both directions. These restrictions are part of the I-81 widening project, with completion estimated for summer 2027; the listed work-zone speed limit is 60 mph.
- Mile markers 221–222 northbound: overnight single-lane paving closures, 8 p.m.–7 a.m. through October 22.
- Mile markers 234–237, both directions: left-shoulder closures around the clock for truck-climbing-lane construction. The listed work-zone speed limit is 60 mph; project completion is estimated for late 2027.
- Mile markers 236–237, both directions: new overnight single-lane bridge-inspection closures, 8 p.m.–4 a.m. Wednesday night.
Rockbridge County
- Mile markers 174–177 northbound: overnight single-lane paving closures, 8 p.m.–7 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights, through October 16.
- Mile markers 197–180 southbound: shoulder closures for ditch cleaning and debris pickup, 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday–Thursday.
Rockingham County
- Mile markers 237–240, both directions: left-shoulder closures around the clock for truck-climbing-lane construction. The listed work-zone speed limit is 60 mph; completion is estimated for late 2027.
- Mile markers 240–251 southbound: overnight single-lane closures for shoulder strengthening and widening and barrier work, 8 p.m.–7 a.m. Monday–Thursday nights through January 2027. The listed work-zone speed limit is 55 mph.
- Mile markers 246–249, both directions: new overnight single-lane bridge-inspection closures, 8 p.m.–2 a.m. Monday and Tuesday.
- Mile markers 258–264: overnight single-lane bridge-painting closures, 8 p.m.–7 a.m. Monday–Thursday, 10 p.m.–9 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 p.m.–7 a.m. Sunday nights through February 1.
- Mile markers 263–264 northbound: new right-shoulder closures for sign work, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday–Friday.

Augusta County
- Route 252 (Middlebrook Road): flagger-controlled tree removal between Route 701 (Howardsville Road) and the Rockbridge County line, 7 a.m.–5 p.m. through Friday, October 9.
- Route 252 (Middlebrook Avenue): flagger-controlled tree removal between the Staunton city line and Route 802 (Dynamite Road), 7 a.m.–3:30 p.m. through October 12.
- Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway): overnight flagger control for paving between Route 11 and Route 250, including interchange ramps, 8 p.m.–6 a.m. through the night of October 15.
- Route 358 (Woodrow Wilson Avenue): shoulder closures between Route 250 and Wilson Elementary School for roadway widening, 7 a.m.–5:30 p.m. through Friday.
- Route 1735 (Quail Lane): flagger-controlled paving, 6 a.m.–7 p.m. through Friday.
- Other roads have weekday flagger control for drainage, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m.
Nelson County
- Route 29 (Thomas Nelson Highway) at Route 653 (Oak Ridge Road): the northbound right lane is closed from 0.6 miles south of Route 653 to 0.2 miles north of it for intersection and turn-lane improvements. The work-zone speed limit is 50 mph while the closure is active. The lane closure was expected to be removed before October 8 for a music festival and may return the following week. Temporary flagging is expected on Oak Ridge Road for shoulder and ditch work. Project completion was expected the week of October 12.
- Route 29 between the Amherst County line and Route 718 (Mountain Cove Road): safety work includes shoulder widening, rumble strips and guardrail replacement; lane closures are expected. Completion is estimated for July 2027.
Rockbridge County
- Route 39 (Maury River Road): flagger-controlled tree removal between Route 727 (Smokey Row Road) and Route 622 (Alone Mill Road), 7 a.m.–5 p.m. through Friday.
- Other roads have weekday flagger control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching, brush cutting and grading, 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m.
Rockingham County
- Route 11 (Lee Highway): new flagger control for overhead utility work between Routes 727 (Airport Road) and 990 (Imboden Road), 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday–Wednesday. Between Route 704 (Oakwood Drive) and Harrisonburg city limits, turn-lane and shoulder closures for widening and intersection improvements run 7 a.m.–5:30 p.m. through Friday.
- Route 11 (North Valley Pike): southbound turn-lane closures and travel-lane shifts for sidewalk installation between Jewell Street and Harrisonburg’s northern city limits, 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday–Friday. Completion is estimated for fall 2027.
- Route 33 (Spotswood Trail): westbound right-shoulder closures for utility work between Elkton Middle School and Route 634 (Tanyard Bridge Road), 7 a.m.–7 p.m. through October 31.
- Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg): single-lane closures as needed between Hawkins Street and University Boulevard, with shoulders closed around the clock for sign and signal work tied to interchange improvements. Completion is expected in October 2026.
- Route 42 (North Main Street, Timberville): flagger-controlled bridge inspection between C Street East and Route 881 (Orchard Drive), 9 a.m.–5 p.m. through Friday.
- Route 42 (Harpine Highway): single-lane paving closures between Harrisonburg city limits and Route 772 (Greenmount Road), 7 a.m.–6 p.m. through Friday.
- Route 259 (Brocks Gap Road): flagger-controlled utility work between Routes 820 (Bergton Road) and 921 (Lairs Run Road), 8 a.m.–5 p.m. through Friday.
- Route 340 (Stuart Avenue, Elkton): single-lane utility-work closures between Spotswood Avenue and Blue and Gold Drive, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. through October 31.
- Other roads have weekday flagger control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m.
Check conditions before setting out
The schedule is a planning guide, not a guarantee that crews will be working at the listed time. Weather and material supplies can change operations. VDOT’s Staunton District alert index directs drivers to 511 Virginia for updated work-zone information. In active work areas, follow posted signs, flaggers and detours, and watch for lane closures and traffic-pattern changes.
