Construction of two separate public infrastructure projects in Ernakulam—the Vaduthala railway overbridge and the Perandoor–Vaduthala bridge across Perandoor Canal—was scheduled to begin on October 7, 2026. An October 6 report said Public Works Minister P.K. Basheer was expected to inaugurate the works; the reported schedule does not, by itself, confirm that the ceremony took place.
Two different crossings, with different roles
The projects address separate barriers in the Vaduthala area. The railway overbridge is planned at level crossing no. 69. The Perandoor–Vaduthala bridge is planned across Perandoor Canal, between Vaduthala and Perandoor. The October 6, 2026 report describes both as scheduled to begin on October 7.
The canal bridge is intended to connect Container Road through Vaduthala toward Kaloor, offering a route that can bypass the congested National Highway. This is the project’s stated network purpose; no measured traffic impact is reported. Better connectivity and reduced risk associated with crossing the railway are anticipated benefits, not outcomes established before construction and evaluation.

These are specifications and sanction amounts reported in the October 6, 2026 account, not independently verified measurements or final contract values. The two sanction labels are distinct and should not be treated as interchangeable cost figures.

Land acquisition and planning record
For the canal bridge, the report says land was acquired under a revised alignment: about 34 cents in Perandoor and 55 cents in Vaduthala. It does not provide further acquisition or construction milestones.
Planning records predate the scheduled start. Rajagiri outREACH’s 2017–18 annual report lists a social impact assessment study for land acquisition for the Vaduthala–Perandoor bridge among its sanctioned studies. Bharata Mata School of Social Work lists a Social Impact Assessment report for land acquisition for the Vaduthala railway overbridge, dated October 1, 2022. These records show earlier planning and assessment activity; neither listing establishes the projects’ present construction or acquisition status.

What the reported timeline does—and does not—establish
The canal bridge has a reported completion period of two years, but the report does not say whether that period runs from inauguration, contract commencement, or another milestone. It therefore does not establish a firm calendar completion date. No completion period is stated for the railway overbridge.
The October 6 report named October 7, 2026 as the planned inauguration date and identified P.K. Basheer as the expected inaugurator. Without subsequent confirmation, the event should be described as scheduled or due to take place, rather than as completed. The report also supplies no traffic counts, accident statistics, or post-construction evaluation with which to quantify the projects’ expected benefits.
