It is especially useful when figured or reversing grain tears out under a conventional plane, and for final smoothing before finishing. Choose a large bench-style model for broad, flat surfaces or a small model for localized scraping; they are not interchangeable in scale or setup.
What a scraping plane does
A scraping plane is a hand tool for smoothing wood. Its blade has a rolled cutting edge that works much like a plane, but the steep blade angle gives it a scraping action similar to a high-angle smoothing plane. That can help when grain changes direction or is highly figured and a conventional plane leaves a rough, torn surface. The Veritas maker describes its bench-style scraping plane as suited to final smoothing of large, flat surfaces, particularly figured or reversing grain: Veritas Scraping Plane.
A scraping plane is related to, but not simply the same as, a card scraper mounted in a body. Veritas distinguishes its blade’s 45-degree bevel from the square edge used on card scrapers; the edge preparation and handling therefore differ. A scraping plane can also complement hand scrapers rather than replace them.
Choose the size for the work
| Style | Best fit | Example and established details |
|---|---|---|
| Large, bench-style scraping plane | Final leveling and smoothing of large, flat surfaces before finishing; useful on highly figured or reversing grain. | Veritas describes its model for these tasks. See the maker’s product page and instructions. |
| Small scraping plane | Small, localized scraping jobs where compact control is useful. | Lie-Nielsen No. 212: 5-1/2-inch-long bronze body, 1-3/8-inch-wide blade, and adjustable blade angle from 75 to 100 degrees. Lie-Nielsen says the design is based on the Stanley No. 212, discontinued in 1934. Details: No. 212 product page. |
These examples establish different intended scales, not a universal winner. Consider the size of the surface, how much control the task needs, and whether the grip will be comfortable for extended use. Blade-angle adjustment and sharpening method also vary by model, so follow the maker’s guidance for the tool in hand.

Set up and use a Lie-Nielsen No. 212
The following procedure applies to the No. 212, not to every scraping plane. Consult the instructions for another model before setting its blade.
- Insert the blade correctly. On the No. 212, the bevel faces the knob.
- Set a shallow exposure. Put the sole on a flat surface and loosen the thumbscrew. Press lightly on top of the blade, then retighten the screw without forcing it. If you need more exposure, Lie-Nielsen says a slip of paper under the front can help.
- Take light passes. Use a light touch. An overly aggressive cut or too much downward pressure can make the plane chatter.
- Change the scraping direction. Work at an angle to the grain, then try the opposite angle to improve the surface.
Lie-Nielsen recommends a sharp 45-degree bevel for this model and says an optional 5-degree secondary bevel may be honed. It advises beginners not to start with a burr. If you choose burr-based preparation, the maker describes clamping the blade upright and drawing a burnisher along the edge to form a hook. These details are specific to the No. 212; do not assume another model uses the same edge geometry or setup.

- Comfortable, fast and simple to use, it your go-to tool for cleaning up surfaces
- Perfect when working on fine projects or in spaces where noise and dust need to be minimized
- Soft cork inserts in the handles soften the sensation of holding the tool
- Flat sole prevents you from creating a divot or depression in the surface
When to use a toothed blade or supporting tool
Lie-Nielsen offers 18- and 25-teeth-per-inch blades for difficult woods and for lightly roughening a surface before veneering. The No. 212 page also describes using a toothed blade to score fibers in a criss-cross pattern before following with the regular blade. Treat this as a model-specific option and check blade fit before buying.
- Hand scraper: A useful companion for areas or tasks better handled by hand; Lie-Nielsen says its scraping plane works well in combination with hand scrapers.
- Burnisher: Relevant if you choose to form a burr on a blade. It is not a requirement for the maker’s recommended beginner setup.
- Replacement blades: Match the blade to the maker and model. Lie-Nielsen states that its cabinet-maker scraper replacement blades are designed for Lie-Nielsen tools, not tools from other makers: replacement-blade details.
Common problems and adjustments
- The plane chatters: Reduce blade exposure and pressure, then take a lighter pass. Lie-Nielsen identifies an aggressive cut and excessive downward pressure as causes of chatter.
- The surface tears instead of smoothing: Try scraping at an angle to the grain, then from the opposite angle. A scraping plane is particularly relevant when grain reverses or is highly figured.
- The tool feels awkward on a broad surface: Consider whether a larger bench-style model is more appropriate; a small plane such as the No. 212 is specified for small jobs.
- A replacement blade does not fit: Confirm maker and model compatibility rather than assuming blades are interchangeable.
Check current product details before buying
Specifications and intended uses are described on the makers’ pages, but stock and pricing can change. Lie-Nielsen’s No. 212 page showed the tool as unavailable when checked for this article; that is not a reliable indication of current availability. Consult the current product page and model instructions before purchasing or setting up a tool.
