USGBC launched TRUE v2 on October 20, 2026, and registration is open through GBCI’s Arc platform. The updated zero-waste certification program applies to facilities, construction projects and events; for construction teams, the main changes are its new 100-point framework, performance-focused credits and clearer digital workflow. Projects must meet v2 prerequisites and earn at least 40 points. Facility certification also requires a 90% average diversion rate over the most recent 12 months.
What is TRUE v2?
TRUE is USGBC’s zero-waste certification program for facilities, construction projects and events. Its facility pathway measures the diversion of solid, non-hazardous waste from landfill, incineration or waste-to-energy, and the environment. USGBC describes v2 as a clearer, faster route to zero-waste leadership, with Arc-based digital workflows and language intended to apply more internationally.

The launch builds on a program USGBC says had more than 680 certified projects, representing 272 million square feet and 8.9 million tons of waste diverted from landfill as of 2026. Those are program-wide figures reported by USGBC, not a forecast of what an individual project will divert.
What changed from TRUE v1 to v2?
TRUE v2 replaces v1’s 15 categories and 81-point system with seven categories and a 100-point scale. The consultation guide organizes the updated credits around three impact areas: Closing the Loop, Decarbonization and Business Transformation.

The v2 guide allocates approximately 15% of the available points to planning, 40% to strategy, 30% to performance and 15 points to Project Priority. The priority category rewards selected high-impact project actions; the guide also calls for more quantified reporting of waste, materials, cost and carbon impacts.
Examples of credit themes include managing organics, diverting waste across nine points of generation, purchasing consumables for zero waste, forming local partnerships, engaging the supply chain, assessing greenhouse-gas and material emissions, advancing local circularity, and calculating zero-waste financial impact. These themes make construction-phase waste prevention and material decisions relevant alongside diversion outcomes.

- Construction project or event: Register under the applicable pathway, meet its v2 prerequisites and reach 40 points. The published launch summary does not state that the facility-specific 12-month diversion rule applies to these pathways.
Certification fees vary by pathway, and fees are calculated per square foot of building space. The launch information does not provide a single fee amount, so project teams should confirm the applicable fee for their pathway during registration.
Do projects have to switch from TRUE v1 to v2?
No. New projects may choose v1 or v2 until v1 registration closes, which USGBC says will be no earlier than Q4 2027. Existing v1 projects may continue under v1 until a tentative sunset no earlier than Q4 2033.
A project already registered under v1 can ask to transition to v2. A project that is already certified can apply to recertify under the v1-to-v2 guidance. Because both the registration close and sunset dates are framed as “no earlier than” dates, they are not fixed deadlines; teams should check current USGBC guidance before deciding when to register or transition.

How does a construction team register for TRUE v2?
Registration is open in Arc. The published launch information establishes the platform and core threshold, but does not provide a complete sequence of Arc screens or documentation lists. A practical starting sequence is:
- Choose the right project pathway. Determine whether the application is for a facility, construction project or event; the pathway affects requirements and fees.
- Register the project in Arc. Use Arc for the v2 registration and digital workflow.
- Review the v2 prerequisites and credits. Map project practices and available evidence to the applicable requirements before selecting credits.
- Plan for the 40-point minimum. Identify achievable planning, strategy, performance and Project Priority credits, including relevant material, organics and supply-chain actions.
- Track project data and supporting records. V2 calls for more quantified reporting of waste, materials, cost and carbon impacts, so coordinate data collection across contractors and suppliers.
- For facility certification, verify the diversion period. Confirm that the most recent 12 months of solid, non-hazardous waste data supports the required average diversion rate.
For construction teams, a useful operational implication is to assign responsibility for waste and material records early. Collection and supplier data can be difficult to reconstruct after work is complete, while v2 puts greater emphasis on measured performance and quantified impacts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should construction teams consider before choosing v1 or v2?
V2 offers the current Arc workflow, a reorganized credit structure and more explicit measurement of performance and impacts. V1 remains an option for new registrations until its registration close, and already-registered projects can continue on that version under the announced transition timetable.

- Consider v2 if the team wants to register through Arc and can plan around its prerequisites, 40-point threshold and expanded reporting themes.
- Consider v1 if project timing or existing documentation aligns better with that framework and registration occurs before v1 closes.
- For registered or certified v1 projects, check the official transition or recertification guidance before changing frameworks; the available launch announcement does not set out project-specific transition steps.
