Louisiana DOTD listed an active construction-zone status on October 16, 2026, for US 61 (Airline Highway) between LA 74 and LA 42 in Ascension Parish. The listing confirms work in the corridor, but its indexed text does not specify which lanes are closed, closure hours, traffic delays or a completion date. Check the DOTD Baton Rouge District and Ascension Parish road-status pages for current conditions before driving.

What the October 16 status means

DOTD’s Baton Rouge District and Ascension Parish road-status listings carry the same dated item: “US 61: LA 74 – LA 42 Ascension Parish Construction Zone.” It should be read as an active construction-zone notice for the US 61 segment between those two routes, not as proof that the highway is fully closed.

The indexed status entry does not publish a lane diagram, direction-specific restrictions, work hours, expected delay or opening date. Conditions can change as crews move through the corridor, so the live DOTD status listing is the appropriate source for a trip-specific decision.

Project identified for the corridor

DOTD’s 2025 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program identifies State Project H.014865, “US 61: LA 74 – LA 42,” in Ascension Parish. The project is assigned control section 007-07 and covers log mile 6.47 through 11.78, a 5.31-mile segment.

Patch, mill and overlay work generally involves repairing damaged pavement, removing a surface layer and placing new asphalt. The project description establishes the planned treatment; it does not, by itself, identify the traffic-control arrangement being used on October 16.

Are US 61 and Airline Highway open?

The October listing does not say that US 61 is closed end to end. It confirms a construction zone, while the number of open lanes and any restrictions remain unspecified in the indexed notice. Drivers should not assume that every lane is available, nor assume a full closure, without checking DOTD’s current road-status update.

What is confirmed

  • The affected corridor is US 61 between LA 74 and LA 42 in Ascension Parish.
  • DOTD posted the construction-zone status on October 16, 2026.
  • The named preservation project spans 5.31 miles.

What is not confirmed by that entry

  • Which direction or lanes are restricted.
  • Whether restrictions apply during the day, overnight or continuously.
  • The expected delay, end date or final opening date.

Earlier nearby lane-control notice: H.014088

A separate DOTD announcement dated April 16, 2026, concerns State Project H.014088, not H.014865. The agency said, “Construction is underway for State Project H.014088. This is an active safety improvement project to create a new left turn lane from US 61 northbound onto LA 427 westbound, as well as widen a portion of LA 427.”

That announcement described nightly northbound inside-lane closures on US 61 between LA 42 and LA 427, from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., Sunday night through Thursday night, while maintaining one lane in each direction. Because it predates the October status and applies to a different project, those hours and lane rules are historical context only; they cannot be used as the current schedule for H.014865.

Other programmed work near LA 74

DOTD’s fiscal-year 2026–2027 District 61 priority program also lists H.015107, LA 73 at LA 74 intersection improvements. The description calls for intersection improvements and roundabout work. Estimated construction costs are $1.375 million for the LA 73 work and $0.688 million for each of two LA 74 control sections. These are programmed figures, not a statement that all of this work is active on October 16, 2026.

Why this matters to drivers

Work at or near the LA 74 junction could add turning restrictions, queueing or future detours even after the US 61 resurfacing activity changes. Treat each DOTD notice as project-specific and check for a newer traffic-control update before relying on an earlier route plan.

Schedule and funding caveat

A June 11, 2026 STIP update records right-of-way and utility-relocation phases for H.014865 in 2026, with project-cost entries of $1.9 million and $0.5 million, respectively. Those programmed phases show activity in the project record but do not establish the field schedule for October, the number of active work zones or a completion date.

How to plan a trip through the zone

  1. Check the DOTD Baton Rouge District or Ascension Parish road-status listing immediately before departure.
  2. Confirm the date and project or roadway limits in the notice; do not substitute the older H.014088 schedule for H.014865.
  3. Allow additional time for potential queues and be prepared for lane shifts or reduced speeds within the signed work zone.
  4. Follow on-site signs, cones, flaggers and law-enforcement directions, even if an earlier online notice described different hours.
  5. If your trip depends on a specific turn at LA 74, LA 42 or LA 427, verify that movement separately because intersection work can change access without closing the entire US 61 segment.

What drivers should take away

As of the October 16, 2026 DOTD listing, US 61 from LA 74 to LA 42 is an active construction zone associated with a 5.31-mile patch, mill and overlay project. The published project construction cost is $12.4 million, with a listed total of $13.64 million including CE&I/IDC. The current indexed status does not establish lane closures, operating hours, delay or completion; those details must come from DOTD’s latest live road-status information.
