The biggest TCL TV audio improvements usually come from three things before you buy anything: choosing the right sound mode, placing the TV or soundbar correctly, and using the correct HDMI ARC/eARC settings. Start by identifying whether your television runs Roku TV or Google TV, because the menus and available features differ by model, region, app, input, and software version.
First, identify your TCL TV platform
TCL Roku TV: sound options are typically under Home > Settings > Audio. ARC and HDMI-CEC controls commonly appear under Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC).

TCL Google TV: begin at Home > Settings > All settings > Display & Sound. External-device controls may instead appear under Channels & Inputs.
Exact labels vary. TCL notes that menus and features can change with the model, software version, region, input source, app, and selected mode. See TCL’s Google TV settings guide for model-specific differences.

Best built-in speaker settings
Make one change at a time and test it with real dialogue rather than a trailer or menu sound.
- Speech, Dialogue, or Voice: start here when voices are difficult to understand.
- Movie: usually the better starting point for films and drama.
- Music: appropriate for stereo music playback.
- Games: useful when available for console gaming.
- Night or volume leveling: reduces the contrast between quiet speech and loud action or commercials.
- Custom or equalizer: raise the midrange or center/dialogue control modestly. Reduce bass if it masks voices, and avoid extreme treble boosts that make speech harsh.
Google TV models may expose bass, treble, loudness, center-speaker volume, surround-speaker volume, Dolby Atmos, DTS dynamic-range control, and audio-delay settings. Not every TCL television includes every control.
How to improve dialogue without buying a soundbar
- Choose Speech or Dialogue mode.
- Lower bass slightly if voices sound muffled or the cabinet vibrates.
- Use Night or volume leveling for late-night viewing.
- Ensure the TV speaker is not blocked by a cabinet lip or aimed away from the seating position.
- Use captions as an accessibility aid when necessary.
Dialogue enhancement can emphasize the signal’s vocal frequencies; it cannot recreate center-channel information that the TV or source never receives. If speech remains unclear, a 3.1 or 3.1.2 soundbar with a dedicated center channel is generally a more targeted upgrade than a basic 2.0 bar.

Connect a soundbar through HDMI ARC or eARC
HDMI ARC is the best general-purpose connection for most soundbars. It carries TV audio to the soundbar and can allow the TV remote to control volume when HDMI-CEC and system-audio control are working.
- Connect the TV port labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC to the soundbar port labeled HDMI OUT/ARC or eARC.
- Use a High Speed or Premium High Speed HDMI cable. An expensive cable is not required, but the cable must be suitable and securely connected.
- Enable ARC and HDMI-CEC. On Roku TV, use
Home > Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC), then enable HDMI ARC and, if desired, System audio control. - Select the soundbar’s HDMI ARC/eARC input.
- On Google TV, open
Settings > All settings > Display & Soundand select the appropriate audio output.
eARC provides more bandwidth than standard ARC, but both the television and audio system must support it. eARC does not upgrade an ARC-only soundbar, cable path, app, or source device.
See TCL’s ARC soundbar setup instructions and Roku’s ARC, eARC, and CEC guidance.

ARC vs. eARC vs. optical vs. Bluetooth
| Connection | Best use | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC | Most soundbars and receivers | Convenient remote control; less bandwidth than eARC |
| HDMI eARC | Compatible modern soundbars and AV receivers | Requires eARC support at both ends; greater format bandwidth |
| Optical | Older soundbars and receivers | Simple and electrically isolated, but limited format support and usually no HDMI-CEC volume control |
| Bluetooth | Headphones and casual listening | Possible latency, limited surround support, and model-dependent compatibility |
| AUX or headphone output | Basic powered speakers or older equipment | Analog stereo only; volume behavior depends on the TV and equipment |
For optical, select the TV’s Optical or Digital Audio Out option. If the soundbar produces no sound, try PCM. Bluetooth output is not supported by every TCL TV, and connected HDMI or optical equipment may take priority.
Choosing Auto, Pass Through, or PCM
These settings determine how the television handles digital audio:
- Pass Through: sends compatible Dolby or DTS audio onward for the soundbar or receiver to decode. It is a useful starting point for a capable external system.
- Auto: negotiates a supported format with the connected receiver on some Google TV models.
- PCM: is the broadest compatibility fallback. On documented TCL Google TV configurations, it normally means uncompressed stereo, so it can restore sound while eliminating surround capability.
Use Auto or Pass Through when the complete chain supports the desired format. Use PCM to diagnose silence, dropouts, or missing dialogue, then return to Auto or Pass Through if surround sound is important. The correct choice depends on the TV, app, source device, cable, soundbar, and receiver.

Understanding surround sound and Dolby Atmos
PCM stereo is reliable but commonly limited to two channels. Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus are common streaming formats. DTS support varies by TCL model, app, source, and sound system.
Dolby Atmos is a format and processing layer—not proof that a setup has physical height speakers. A soundbar may decode Atmos, simulate height through virtualization, or use upward-firing drivers. Convincing overhead effects depend on the hardware, ceiling and room geometry, content, and placement. eARC can carry higher-bitrate formats, but it cannot bypass limitations elsewhere in the signal chain.

Placement improvements that cost nothing
- Keep the soundbar centered beneath the screen.
- Do not bury it deep inside a cabinet or block its drivers with a cabinet lip.
- Place a subwoofer on the floor and test several positions, including reasonable distances from walls and corners.
- Keep wireless subwoofers away from obvious interference sources.
- Do not place a soundbar directly behind the listener.
- Position rear speakers symmetrically and avoid putting them directly beside or in front of the listener.
- If speech sounds bright or echoey, rugs, curtains, and furniture can reduce excessive reflections.
Choosing the right external system
| System | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0 soundbar | Clearer forward sound in a small room | Usually limited bass, width, and dialogue targeting |
| 2.1 soundbar | More impact for films and music | A subwoofer does not guarantee better dialogue without a center channel |
| 3.1 or 3.1.2 soundbar | Dialogue, films, and center-channel control | Height effects may be virtual or strongly room-dependent |
| 5.1 system | Surround separation with rear speakers | More placement, cables, and synchronization points |
| 5.1.2 or 7.1.4 system | More cinematic surround and height effects | Needs suitable room geometry and careful placement |
| AV receiver and separate speakers | Large rooms, enthusiasts, multiple sources, and upgradeability | Most complex option, requiring calibration and speaker placement |
Stay with the built-in speakers if the room is small, viewing is casual, dialogue is already intelligible, and simplicity matters most. Consider TCL’s current soundbar range only after identifying the problem: the S45H is a basic 2.0 option, the S55H adds a subwoofer, the Q65H is a 5.1 system, the Q75H is a 5.1.2 system, and the Q85H is a 7.1.4 system with wireless satellite speakers. Configurations and availability should be verified on TCL’s official U.S. soundbar page.

Fix common TCL TV audio problems
No sound through ARC or eARC
- Confirm both devices use their ARC/eARC-designated ports.
- Set the soundbar to its HDMI ARC/eARC input.
- Enable ARC and HDMI-CEC on the TV.
- Make sure the soundbar is powered on and the cable is fully seated.
- Power-cycle both devices.
- Search for CEC devices.
- Try another High Speed HDMI cable.
- Temporarily disconnect other HDMI equipment.
- Change Digital Audio Out to PCM to test for format incompatibility.
- Once sound works, try Auto or Pass Through again if surround is required.
The sound is only stereo
PCM, stereo source material, an incompatible soundbar, an optical connection, a source device configured for stereo, or the TV’s format conversion may be responsible. Try Auto or Pass Through, confirm the soundbar’s supported codecs, test known surround content, and check the source device’s audio settings.
Audio drops out
Try Auto instead of Pass Through, then PCM as a diagnostic. Power-cycle every device, remove other HDMI devices temporarily, check firmware through official support channels, and compare an internal TV app with an external source. PCM may improve reliability but can sacrifice surround.
Lip-sync delay
On Roku TV, open Settings > Audio > S/PDIF and ARC/eARC and select Auto Passthrough. Power-cycle the TV and soundbar, then test another app or source. Google TV models may provide Audio Delay or Digital Audio Out Delay controls, but their availability depends on the active output. See TCL’s Roku audio-delay guidance.
Dialogue disappears with surround content
The center channel may not be reaching the soundbar or receiver, the system may not decode the selected stream, or an HDMI handshake may have failed. Temporarily switch to PCM, confirm the center channel is enabled, test known stereo content, reconnect or power-cycle the chain, and verify the soundbar’s supported codecs. Return to Auto or Pass Through only after compatibility is established.
Quick Recap
Bluetooth sound is delayed
Bluetooth may be unsuitable for gaming or dialogue-critical viewing when the TV and headphones lack low-latency synchronization. Use HDMI, optical, or wired headphones when timing matters.
Final TCL audio checklist
- Identify whether the TV is Roku TV or Google TV.
- Use the platform-specific menu path.
- Try Speech or Dialogue mode before changing hardware.
- Reduce excessive bass and remove placement obstructions.
- Use the correct ARC/eARC ports.
- Enable HDMI-CEC when remote volume and device discovery are wanted.
- Test Auto or Pass Through for surround.
- Use PCM as a compatibility fallback, not a universal permanent fix.
- Test internal apps and external sources separately.
- Check cable connections, firmware, soundbar input, and lip-sync controls.
