The name describes its contact arrangement—not its suitability for a particular voltage, load, or installation. To choose one, check its switching positions, manufacturer’s schematic, electrical ratings, terminals, mounting, and environmental specifications.
What does DPDT mean?
“Pole” means a separately controlled circuit path; “throw” means a selectable connection for that path. A DPDT switch has two poles, each with two possible connections. Its mechanism links the poles, so operating the switch changes both together, while the circuit paths remain distinct. TE Connectivity explains the pole-and-throw terminology in its toggle switch overview.

A DPDT switch can be understood as two single-pole double-throw paths operated by one mechanism. “Double pole” does not mean “four terminals”: the physical terminal count depends on the switch design. Littelfuse cautions against confusing a pole with a terminal in its switch reference guide.
How does a DPDT switch work?
For each pole, the switch selects one of two paths. Moving its actuator changes both poles’ selections together. The exact connections in each position are determined by the switch’s contact arrangement and manufacturer’s diagram; the DPDT label alone does not establish which physical terminal connects to which.

Check the product schematic before identifying terminals or planning connections. Relay diagrams often use COM (common), NO (normally open), and NC (normally closed) labels, but those conventions do not establish a universal pin layout for a manual toggle switch. Tektronix’s switching handbook discusses Form C relay contacts and break-before-make relay operation; treat that as relay terminology, not a pinout for an unspecified manual switch.
What do On-On and On-Off-On mean?
These labels describe the available actuator positions and whether a position is active:

- Connector type: DPDT, 6 terminal pin on/off/on. Power: 15A 250VAC/20A 125VAC , 1/2" mounting hole.
- Material: plastic and metal. Solid connection switch with waterproof rubber cap, more convenient to operate. Delicate appearance with strong Construction. Look chic and high-end on your equipment
- Mechanical life: more than 50. 000 cycles. Electrical life: more than 10, 000 cycles
- Easy to install: Mounting hole diameter: O12mm. Each of the terminals has a machine screw for quick connections, but also easy to be soldered
- Package include: 5Pcs toggle switch, 5Pcs waterproof boot cap.
- On-On: Both positions are active. The switch selects one connection or the other for each pole.
- On-Off-On: The switch has two active positions and a center-off position. In the center position, the switched paths are off according to the product’s design.
Confirm the switching function on the exact product page and schematic. A product family may offer more than one configuration, so the family name alone may not identify the model’s positions. Littelfuse’s switch reference guide covers position terminology.

How is DPDT different from similar switches?
- SPDT: One pole selects between two connections. DPDT has two such paths operated together.
- On-On versus On-Off-On: These are different position functions available on some DPDT switches; only the latter includes a center-off position.
- Double-throw safety switch: This is a distinct equipment category, not simply another name for a small DPDT toggle. Eaton describes its double-throw safety switch family as interlocked equipment for transferring service between normal and alternate sources. See Eaton’s double-throw safety switches.
What should you check before choosing a DPDT switch?
- Match the switching function. Decide whether the circuit needs On-On or On-Off-On, then verify that exact configuration in the product documentation.
- Check voltage, current, and load ratings. Compare the switch’s published ratings with the intended circuit and load. Do not assume a DPDT label gives a standard rating or means the switch is suitable for every load.
- Verify the schematic and terminals. Use the exact manufacturer drawing to identify contacts and confirm conductor and terminal compatibility.
- Check mounting and environment. Confirm the physical form, mounting method, and environmental specifications suit the location.
- Determine whether the job requires purpose-built equipment. Mains wiring, source transfer, and code-regulated installations require an appropriate product and compliance with applicable local requirements; a general-purpose DPDT switch is not automatically suitable.
Specifications are model-specific. For example, Hubbell lists its HBL1386 as a DPDT center-off switch rated 20 A and 120–277 VAC, with particular wire accommodations. Those are HBL1386 product specifications, not general limits for DPDT switches. See the Hubbell HBL1386 product page. TE Connectivity’s switch catalog likewise shows why the configuration and characteristics must be checked for the specific product.

Why there is no universal DPDT pinout
DPDT describes the number of poles and throws, not a standardized physical terminal arrangement. Terminal placement and the connections made in each actuator position vary by product. Use the exact model’s schematic rather than relying on a generic six-terminal drawing or assuming that relay COM/NO/NC labels map to a manual switch’s layout. The available documentation does not establish a universal wiring procedure or local code requirements for an unspecified installation.
