Choose a screw for the material it is meant to join and the job the joint must perform: wood screws are used for wood connections, machine screws secure metal components, and tapping or sheet-metal screws are a separate fastener category. Then check the specific size, head, drive, material and finish against the application.
What are the main types of screws?
These categories offer a practical starting point, not an exhaustive universal classification. The right choice depends on the receiving material and joint, as well as the individual screw’s specification.

Wood screws: wood connections and framing
Wood screws are intended for wood connections. One construction example from the Canadian Wood Council’s screw guidance is fastening floor sheathing to floor joists. The example identifies an application; it does not provide a universal screw size or design capacity for every floor assembly.
Specify a wood screw by more than its family name. The Council identifies gauge, length, head style, material and finish as characteristics to consider. Match those details to the materials, connection and applicable project requirements rather than choosing by appearance alone.

Splitting, withdrawal and holes
The Canadian Wood Council notes that screws are usually better than nails at resisting withdrawal, and that pre-drilled holes can reduce splitting. It also notes lead-hole requirements in specified conditions. These are general considerations, not a withdrawal-capacity rating or an instruction to pre-drill every screw hole. For a structural connection, use the applicable design and installation requirements for the specific materials and fastener.
Machine screws and tapping or sheet-metal screws
Machine screws
Lowe’s describes machine screws as a category for securing metal components. That broad description is not enough to select a screw for a particular joint: verify the receiving material and the product’s dimensions and instructions. Do not substitute a machine screw for a wood screw solely because both can be driven into a project.

Tapping or sheet-metal screws
ASTM International’s fastener standards catalog includes a category for tapping or sheet-metal screws. A category listing does not determine the correct screw for a particular sheet thickness, substrate or assembly. Confirm the product’s intended use and the requirements of the joint.
How to choose a screw for the job
- Identify what the screw will join. Start with the receiving material and the materials being connected. A wood connection, metal-component joint and sheet-metal application are not automatically served by the same screw family.
- Match the screw to the application. Use the product’s stated purpose and instructions. If a joint is structural or otherwise governed by project specifications, follow the applicable design requirements rather than inferring capacity from the screw category.
- Check size and specification. For wood screws, the Canadian Wood Council lists gauge and length among the key characteristics. Confirm dimensions against the connection and product guidance; the sources do not establish one size for all uses.
- Confirm head and drive compatibility. The head must suit the installation and the tool. Screwfix’s screw buying guide explains that a screw is turned with a compatible screwdriver or drill. Use a matching drive bit to install it as intended.
- Check material and finish. For wood screws, the Council identifies both as specification choices. Select them in light of the project conditions and product requirements; no single material or finish is established here as best for every job.
- Follow installation and standards requirements. Use the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable project documents. ASTM’s catalog marks some listed standards as withdrawn, so verify a standard’s current status, edition and scope before relying on it for compliance or engineering decisions.
Why the screw name is not a complete specification
A broad category tells you where to begin, not whether a specific fastener is suitable. Two screws in the same family can differ in dimensions, head, drive, material and finish. Likewise, a product described for multiple materials should not be assumed suitable for every workpiece or joint. Product instructions and the requirements of the actual assembly determine whether the choice fits.
