Japanese bonsai is the art of training a living tree or shrub in a container to evoke the scale, character, and presence of a mature tree in nature. It is not a single species, a miniature tree kept indoors, or a finished ornament: its form develops through ongoing care, including pruning and, when appropriate, wiring.
What makes a bonsai Japanese?
Bonsai uses ordinary trees and shrubs, shaped and maintained in containers to suggest trees or groups of trees in the natural landscape. The Chicago Botanic Garden describes pruning, trimming, and wiring as techniques guided by a design, with an intended viewing front for the finished composition. Because the tree continues to grow, shaping is an ongoing practice rather than a one-time decoration. Chicago Botanic Garden: Bonsai styles
The art has Chinese antecedents as well as a distinct history of development in Japan. The BONSAI JAPAN exhibition history describes bonkei entering Japan during the Heian period (794–1185), followed by the development of Japanese aesthetics and associations with aristocrats and samurai in later periods. It says the term “bonsai” seems to have come into use during the Meiji period (1868–1912). This is an exhibition organizer’s overview, not a definitive scholarly chronology. The Nippon Bonsai Association also describes Chinese origins and continuing development in Japan. BONSAI JAPAN: History and aesthetics; Nippon Bonsai Association: History
The exhibition history connects bonsai with wabi-sabi and the expression of a natural world within limited space. Weathered trunks and deadwood may contribute to a tree’s character, but they are interpretive possibilities—not requirements for every bonsai. BONSAI JAPAN: History and aesthetics

How to recognize common bonsai styles
Style names describe visual conventions, not rigid categories. A tree can combine qualities from more than one form. These styles evoke different ways trees grow or respond to their surroundings. Chicago Botanic Garden: Bonsai styles
| Style | Trunk and silhouette | Effect it evokes |
|---|---|---|
| Formal upright (chokkan) | Upright trunk with a balanced, regular outline | A tree growing upright in open conditions |
| Informal upright (moyogi) | Upright overall, but with curves in the trunk | A tree whose growth has responded to its environment |
| Slanting (shakkan) | Trunk leans noticeably to one side | A tree shaped by conditions that influence its direction of growth |
| Cascade (kengai) | Trunk and branches descend below the container’s rim | A tree growing over a cliff or steep drop |
| Semi-cascade (han-kengai) | Trunk descends but does not extend as far down as in a full cascade | A less extreme overhanging form |
| Broom (hokidachi) | Branches spread upward and outward from a relatively straight trunk | A broad, rounded crown |
| Windswept (fukinagashi) | Trunk and branches lean or flow predominantly in one direction | A tree shaped by persistent wind |
| Forest or group planting | Several trees arranged together in one composition | A grove or stand of trees |
The five upright, slanting, and cascade forms are identified by the Chicago Botanic Garden as essential styles; broom, windswept, and forest plantings are also recognized forms. The descriptions are useful for reading a tree’s silhouette, not for deciding that every specimen must fit only one label. Chicago Botanic Garden: Bonsai styles; BONSAI JAPAN: History and aesthetics

Is bonsai difficult?
Bonsai asks for observation and decisions suited to the particular tree. The Nippon Bonsai Association frames beginner guidance around questions such as whether bonsai is difficult and what matters when growing it. A sound starting point is to learn the species and growing conditions of the tree you have, then watch how it responds; a universal care calendar cannot account for differences in species, climate, season, and health. How to care for a bonsai tree
Water by checking the tree and soil
Inspect the soil daily, then decide whether to water based on its condition and the tree’s needs. Daily inspection is not a recommendation to water every day. The Omiya Bonsai Art Museum warns that a healthy tree takes up water, while watering a weakened tree too frequently can accelerate root rot. Avoid applying a fixed frequency to every bonsai. Prune with the future shape in mind
Pruning removes unnecessary or overgrown branches and helps establish the intended form. Before cutting, picture the tree after the branch is gone: the museum notes that a removed branch cannot be restored. If you are unsure how a cut will affect the design or the tree, seek guidance specific to its species and condition. Omiya Bonsai Art Museum: Bonsai care
Wire cautiously
Wiring guides branches toward a desired shape, but the timing and how carefully the wire is wrapped matter because poor technique can damage the tree. Beginners should get species-specific advice before attempting delicate wiring rather than treating it as a routine step for every bonsai. Omiya Bonsai Art Museum: Bonsai care

Repot when the tree’s needs call for it
Over time, roots can become congested and old soil can impede air circulation. Repotting involves removing the tree, managing its roots, and planting it in fresh soil. The appropriate interval varies by species, so do not use a calendar for one kind of tree as a rule for all bonsai. Omiya Bonsai Art Museum: Bonsai care
