Types of Chicken Coops: Stationary Coops and Chicken Tractors

The main backyard coop choices are a stationary coop with a run and a portable chicken tractor. Compare their trade-offs and plan for your flock, site, and local rules.

For most backyard flocks, the main choice is a stationary coop with an attached or separate run, or a portable coop known as a chicken tractor. A fixed setup offers a stable home and protected outdoor space; a tractor can be moved to fresh ground for foraging and rotation. Choose based on the birds you keep, your site and local rules, and how much daily work you can take on.

The two main types of chicken coops

Stationary coop with a run

A stationary coop stays in one location and provides sheltered housing, commonly alongside an enclosed outdoor run. The run gives birds outdoor space while helping protect them from predators and bad weather. This layout suits keepers who want a stable housing area and can maintain the run and the ground around it. The University of Florida IFAS describes the coop-and-enclosed-run approach in its backyard chicken guidance.

Portable coop or chicken tractor

A chicken tractor is a mobile shelter, often moved by hand, on skids or wheels, or with a tractor. Some portable coops have no floor, allowing birds to forage on the ground beneath them as the shelter is repositioned. Moving the unit can provide access to new forage and distribute manure over a wider area. The UMass Amherst poultry-housing guidance describes portable, bottomless housing; UF/IFAS’s guide to raising backyard chickens for eggs discusses chicken tractors and their use.

Mobility has trade-offs. The unit must be practical to move across your terrain, large enough for the flock, and secured against predators. Moving manure also spreads any pathogens it contains, including Salmonella, according to UF/IFAS. That source advises storing mobile coops in an enclosed area during a hurricane or major weather event. UMass particularly recommends the portable approach for broilers; laying hens housed in a mobile system need a nesting unit. These are recommendations for those designs, not a rule that every mobile coop is unsuitable for layers.

How much space should a coop and run provide?

Published space figures vary by context and should not be collapsed into a single universal minimum. UMass gives an approximate range of 2–10 square feet per bird for poultry housing, with the need varying by bird type. Separately, UF/IFAS suggests 8–10 square feet of outdoor run per bird. The first figure concerns housing; the second is guidance for outdoor run area.

Use those recommendations as planning references, then match the dimensions to your flock, bird type, layout, and ability to keep the space dry and clean. A run that is too small for the flock can become difficult to maintain; a mobile coop also needs to fit the birds while remaining manageable to move.

What to check before choosing a design

Flock purpose and nesting

Decide whether you are housing laying hens, broilers, or dual-purpose birds. Laying hens need a place to nest and lay eggs, so make sure a portable design includes a nesting unit or that you can provide one separately.

Site, drainage, and weather

Choose a high, well-drained site and avoid wet or flood-prone areas. UMass recommends this siting approach. If you choose a mobile unit, plan where it can be stored securely during severe weather.

Ventilation, dryness, and cleaning

Housing should stay dry and well ventilated without exposing birds to drafts. UConn Extension also advises flooring that is easy to clean. UMass recommends materials that clean easily and resist rot. These construction priorities matter whether the coop stays put or moves around the property.

Predator resistance

Build with sturdy materials, secure latches, and an enclosed run. For openings, UConn recommends hardware cloth rather than chicken wire because predators can tear chicken wire. Check doors, corners, and any points where the run meets the ground as part of your security plan.

Local rules and neighborhood fit

Before buying materials or a finished coop, check local ordinances for permits, setbacks, allowed flock size, and rooster restrictions. Rules vary by locality; UF/IFAS advises checking the relevant ordinance.

Construction effort and upkeep

A ready-made coop can reduce building work. A DIY coop gives you control over the layout, but requires plans, materials, and construction time. Your choice also affects routine labor: a stationary setup needs ongoing care of its fixed run and surrounding ground, while a tractor needs regular movement and a workable rotation routine. Costs depend on whether you buy or build; the available source does not establish comparable prices for stationary coops and tractors.

Which type fits your flock?

Consideration Stationary coop with run Portable coop or chicken tractor
Best fit A stable housing location with an attached or separate enclosed outdoor area. A keeper able to move the shelter and manage a forage rotation.
Outdoor access Birds use the fixed run or a protected yard area. Birds can forage on new ground when the unit is repositioned; some designs are bottomless.
Laying hens Provide nesting space in the coop. Include a nesting unit; UMass especially recommends portable designs for broilers.
Weather planning Select a high, well-drained site and maintain the fixed area. Plan movement and secure enclosed storage during hurricanes or major weather events, as UF/IFAS advises.
Key management concern Maintain the run and surrounding ground. Move and secure the structure, and account for the spread of manure and any pathogens it contains.

Neither format is automatically better. A stationary coop is the straightforward choice when you want a permanent housing area and can maintain its run. A chicken tractor may suit a flock and property where moving the shelter is practical and forage rotation is part of the routine. In either case, plan for the birds’ space, shelter, cleanability, and protection before settling on a layout.
