A twin screw extruder uses two screws inside a barrel to convey and process material. The first major choice is whether the screws rotate in the same direction (co-rotating) or opposite directions (counter-rotating): co-rotating designs are commonly used for mixing and compounding, while counter-rotating designs can suit selected lower-shear applications, including heat-sensitive PVC. Neither label alone guarantees a result. Screw geometry, formulation, operating conditions, and downstream equipment all affect performance.
What a twin screw extruder does
Material enters a barrel containing two screws. As the screws rotate, they convey and work the material; the machine can be configured for tasks such as compounding, mixing, forming, or reactive extrusion. The screws are not necessarily identical, fixed shafts: manufacturers may assemble them from segmented elements selected for the process.
Those elements and their geometry influence conveying and mixing. In co-rotating designs, screw elements must mesh without touching, and their geometric relationships affect how the machine operates. Screw configuration is therefore part of process engineering, not a generic accessory choice. See the technical discussion by Roos, Steffens, and Zimmermann, “Screw design for co-rotating twin-screw extruders”.
Co-rotating and counter-rotating: the key difference
| Decision point | Co-rotating | Counter-rotating |
|---|---|---|
| Screw direction | Both screws turn in the same direction. | The screws turn in opposite directions. |
| Typical process emphasis | Mixing and compounding, with performance shaped by the selected screw elements. | Selected designs can provide lower-shear processing and positive conveying. |
| Examples in the cited sources | Filled compounds, blends, masterbatch, recycling, and reactive extrusion. | PVC and other heat-sensitive polymers; some powder or slippery feeds. |
| Important qualification | Mixing intensity and results depend on element geometry and process conditions. | Machine geometry and type vary; behavior is not identical across all counter-rotating machines. |
This is a practical starting distinction, not a complete machine-selection rule. A 2024 review describes counter-rotating machines as primarily used for thermally sensitive polymers such as PVC and reports better feeding of powdered or slippery material than other extrusion variants. Co-rotating designs are associated with compounding, filling, and reinforcing polymers in the same review. Read the review, “Scaling-Up for the Counter-Rotating Twin Screw Extrusion of Polymers”, alongside application-specific manufacturer information.

What twin screw extruders are used for
Technovel lists a broad range of applications for its twin screw extruder systems. The examples below describe that manufacturer’s stated application range; they do not establish that one machine can process every material or make every product.
- Compounding and dispersion: calcium carbonate, talc, glass fiber and other filler compounds; highly filled materials; carbon black dispersion; polymer alloys; and masterbatch.
- Forming and modification: sheet, film, and tube forming; reactive extrusion; and polymer modification.
- Other sectors and materials: medical tubing and hollow fiber; alternative meat and food-waste processing; feed; and plastics, chemical, and rubber recycling.
Technovel’s applications and technical support page provides the company’s application information. Confirm capability for the actual formulation, production target, and product rather than inferring it from a broad application list.

How to select a machine for a process
There is no universal sizing rule in the cited sources that selects screw diameter or length-to-diameter ratio (L/D) from a short checklist. A useful vendor discussion starts with the material and the job the extruder must do, then checks how the proposed configuration fits that process.
- Describe the feed and formulation. Identify the materials, formulation, and feeding behavior, including whether the feed is powdered or slippery.
- Define the process objective. Clarify whether the job is compounding, forming, reaction, recycling, or another operation, and describe the desired product geometry.
- Explain process sensitivities. Discuss the required balance of mixing and shear, sensitivity to heat, and any need for venting or degassing.
- Set the production target. State the expected output and ask the supplier to identify the operating conditions and material basis behind any throughput figure.
- Check the full production line. Review compatibility with feeding, product handling, and downstream equipment, plus the auxiliaries and utilities included in the proposed supply.
- Request a process-specific proposal. Ask for the proposed screw configuration, operating envelope, supporting process data, and service arrangements. Have the manufacturer confirm suitability for the stated material and application.
These questions turn a general machine category into a process-specific evaluation; they are practical buyer guidance, not a standardized procurement checklist.

How to interpret published specifications
Published figures describe particular models or product ranges, not universal twin screw extruder benchmarks. For example, KraussMaffei lists its ZE BluePower co-rotating product range in sizes from 28 to 186 mm. Its product page characterizes medium-sized machines for typical compounding and recycling, and larger models for higher-throughput compounding and recycling, with some use in foam and sheet applications. These are manufacturer statements, not an independent performance comparison. Details are on the ZE BluePower product page.
TwinScrew lists its counter-rotating TSE-75 with a 75 mm screw diameter, L/D of 25:1, drive speed of 35–40 RPM, and maximum output of 200–300 kg/hr. These are figures for that model on the TwinScrew product page; the stated maximum output should be evaluated against the material, formulation, and operating conditions proposed for your process.

Screws, screw elements, and barrels may be relevant when configuring or maintaining an extruder, but compatibility is machine-specific. Before buying a component, verify the machine manufacturer and series, dimensions, geometry, materials, and process requirements with the equipment supplier. Similar appearance or a shared machine category does not establish interchangeability.
