The right window treatment depends on what each room needs: adjustable daylight, privacy, a softer look, help managing sun and temperature, or a fit that works with the window’s frame. Blinds use tilting slats; shades generally use fabric that raises and lowers. Compare those differences with the room’s use, window shape, frame depth, and any child-safety concerns before choosing.
What’s the difference between blinds and shades?
Blinds generally have hard horizontal slats that tilt. Tilting them lets you adjust the amount of light and view without raising the entire covering. Shades are typically fabric coverings; raising or lowering the fabric changes how much of the window is covered. The distinction is useful when deciding whether you want fine control over light and visibility or a continuous, softer surface.
Product names and construction can vary, so check the specifications for the treatment you are considering rather than relying on its category name alone.
How should you choose a treatment for each room?
Start with how the room is used, then compare the features that matter for that window. A bedroom may call for stronger light blocking and nighttime privacy; a living area may benefit from adjustable daylight or a view. Sun exposure, appearance, cost, window shape, operating needs, and insulation priorities can all affect the choice.

- Light and view: Decide whether you want to filter daylight, reduce glare, block more light, or adjust light while retaining some view. Slats tilt to change light and visibility; fabric shades change coverage as they move up or down.
- Privacy: Consider both daytime and nighttime needs. A treatment that provides daytime privacy may not provide the same privacy after dark when lights are on inside.
- Sun and temperature: If managing heat or cold is a priority, compare the product’s construction and performance information. Do not assume every treatment offers the same insulating effect.
- Appearance and operation: Consider whether slats or fabric suit the room and whether the selected lift or control mechanism is practical for the people using it.
- Window constraints: A nonstandard shape, shallow frame, or protruding handle can rule out some products or mounting methods.
When cellular or honeycomb shades may fit
Cellular shades are also called honeycomb shades. Blinds.com describes options with light-filtering, room-darkening, and blackout fabrics, and says cellular shades can help insulate against heat and cold. Those are retailer-described product characteristics, not a guarantee of a particular result in every home. Check the chosen shade’s fabric, product details, and installation requirements against your needs.
Why cordless operation matters in homes with young children
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says, “The safest option when young children are present is to go cordless.” See the agency’s Window Covering Cords guidance. CPSC warns that strangulation involving window cords can happen silently.

Where possible, buy and install cordless window coverings. A cordless label does not establish that every product has identical construction or removes every possible hazard; review the product’s safety information and current CPSC guidance.
For existing corded coverings, CPSC advises moving cribs, beds, furniture, and toys away from cords; shortening dangling pull cords; using cord stops properly; and anchoring continuous-loop cords. These steps reduce risk but do not eliminate it. They are not a substitute for choosing cordless coverings where possible or a guarantee of safety.

How do you measure for blinds or shades?
Use the selected product’s own measuring and mounting instructions. Requirements vary by style and manufacturer, and a small difference in frame depth or an obstruction can affect whether a covering fits or operates correctly. Measure each window individually rather than assuming openings that look alike have identical dimensions. Record width and height clearly, and check handles, latches, and other obstructions.
Inside mount
An inside mount sits within the window frame and creates a fitted appearance. It depends on adequate frame depth and enough clearance for the product and any moving parts. Blinds.com’s general instructions for a traditional inside mount are:

- Measure the opening’s width at the top, middle, and bottom; use the smallest measurement.
- Measure the height at the left, center, and right; use the largest measurement.
- Check the chosen product’s depth requirements and look for handles, latches, or other obstructions that could interfere with installation or operation.
- Follow the selected product’s ordering instructions. Blinds.com says to submit exact opening measurements without deductions for the traditional custom products covered by its guide because the factory applies deductions. Confirm that rule for your specific product before ordering.
Outside mount
An outside mount attaches outside the frame and may cover more of the opening. First decide how much area the treatment should cover, then account for overlap and the mounting hardware. The appropriate coverage and dimensions depend on the selected product and installation; retailer recommendations are not universal standards. Consult its product-specific instructions before measuring or ordering.
Quick Recap
What should you check before ordering?
- Confirm the treatment’s light-control level and whether it meets the room’s privacy needs.
- Verify that the mount type and frame depth suit the actual window.
- Check clearances around handles, latches, and other obstructions.
- Review the product’s measuring, installation, operating, and safety information.
- If children are present, give priority to cordless coverings where possible and consult current CPSC guidance.
