Twilight Treasures: 7 Plants and Flowers to Flourish in Your Moon Garden

Seven plants for a moon garden, chosen for pale or white flowers, silver foliage, and blooms or fragrance that show up after dusk, with regional and safety cautions.

A moon garden is planted for the hours after sunset. The plants that earn a place in one usually do three things: they carry pale or white flowers that stay visible in low light, they have silver or variegated foliage that catches whatever light is available, and they open or release fragrance as evening arrives. The seven plants below are examples drawn from university extension guidance, not a universal list. Which ones will thrive in your garden depends on your climate, soil moisture, and how much sun or shade the site receives.

What to look for in a moon garden plant

  • Pale or white flowers. White and light shades remain readable when color fades, so the beds still show shape and detail after dark.
  • Silver, gray, or variegated foliage. Leaves in these tones reflect faint light and give the eye a steady texture when flowers are closed or hard to see.
  • Night-opening blooms or evening fragrance. Some flowers open at dusk, and some fragrant plants smell stronger in the evening, which gives the garden a second life after sunset.

The seven plants

1. Moonflower (Ipomoea alba)

Moonflower is the most direct fit for the theme. The University of Florida IFAS Extension describes its showy white flowers as unfurling at dusk and closing the next morning, and it notes that moths visit the blooms. Clemson Extension recommends the vine for the same luminous flowers and nocturnal moth visitors. Because each flower lasts one night, plan for a succession of buds rather than a single display.

2. Evening primrose (Oenothera species)

Clemson Extension reports that evening primrose flowers open at dusk. Its showy example has soft pink blooms that reflect light, and Colorado State University Extension lists the plant among those visited by bees and moths. Species and flower color vary within the genus, so name the species you buy when comparing care or bloom timing. Sue Watts, Program Coordinator II and Garden Educator at the South Carolina Botanical Gardens, writes in Clemson Extension’s article:

The very well-named evening primrose (Oenothera sp.) comes alive at dusk as the flowers open, sometimes so quickly that you can watch it happen.

#1 Best Overall
Sow Right Seeds - Moon Flower Seed for Planting Moonflower Night Garden
  • Beautiful – Large premium packet of Moonflower (Ipomoea alba) seeds. White, trumpet-shaped blooms create a magical atmosphere for your summer garden. These fragrant flowers open at dusk, creating a serene display for your outdoor space while attracting nighttime pollinators like moths. Minimum of 13 g per packet (about 55 seeds).
  • Productive - Moonflower germinates in 5-10 days when soil temps are 60-70°F. Plant 1/2” deep and space 6-8” apart in an area with full sunlight during the day and no light at night. This variety will grow 1-3’ tall with a spread of 1-4’. Moonflower will mature in 84-90 days, plant in USDA zones 3-13.
  • Exotic - Photosensitive vines require darkness to produce blooms. Flowers open up in the evening and stay open all night, closing during the day. Plant away from a bright yard or street lights. Whether you have a backyard or balcony, Moonflower is easily trained to climb or trail, fitting into pots, trellises, and garden fences.
  • Easy to Grow - Instructions included on each packet. Plus, we are available to answer all your questions. If these seeds don’t germinate, we will happily make it right for you.
  • Safe and Sustainable - Our operation is fully solar powered, and Sow Right Seeds has taken the Safe Seed Pledge to sell only fresh Non-GMO heirloom seeds for you and your family.

3. Southern magnolia and sweet bay magnolia

Clemson Extension suggests both species as fragrant, white-flowering options for a moon garden backdrop, and says their fragrance intensifies in the evening. Their size makes them better suited to the back of a border or a corner with room to grow than to a small bed.

4. Native hydrangeas

Clemson describes native hydrangeas with white, cream, or dusky pink flowers over gray-green foliage, and notes that moths visit hydrangeas. In one South Carolina garden described in the same article, oakleaf hydrangea holds its flower panicles through summer. That timing reflects one garden and one cultivar; expect different bloom periods in other climates.

5. Stokes’ aster (Stokesia laevis)

UF/IFAS names white-blooming cultivars, including ‘Alba’ and ‘Silver Moon’, as choices for a nighttime garden. Pale flowers at the front of a bed make a good counterpoint to darker foliage behind them.

6. Dusty miller

UF/IFAS highlights the silvery foliage of dusty miller as a reflective texture for low-light areas. The guidance describes it as a cool-season annual in Florida. Elsewhere, its seasonal behavior depends on local conditions, so check regional guidance before planting it as a long-term feature.

Designing the view from where you sit

Start with the place you will actually enjoy the garden after dark, whether that is a patio, a walkway, or a window. Position the pale flowers and silver foliage where they will be seen from that spot. Variegated leaves help as well, because they keep some contrast when the light is low.

Avoid planting seven plants that all bloom at once. Mix heights and bloom periods so that something is open across more of the season. Colorado State University Extension recommends this kind of bloom succession for nighttime pollinator resources. Evergreen structure extends the display beyond the flowering months, which matters most in a garden that is meant to look intentional in every season.

Soil, moisture, sun, and shade will decide whether a given plant performs. Clemson Extension stresses these conditions in its guidance, so match each plant to your site rather than to a list.

Night pollinators and outdoor lighting

A moon garden can support night-active insects. Clemson Extension describes moths visiting hydrangeas and dusk-opening flowers, and Colorado State University Extension discusses moths as pollinators of evening primrose and other plants. If supporting these visitors is your goal, Colorado State University Extension recommends native species where possible, habitat features such as shrubs or brush piles, and avoiding harsh outdoor lighting.

Lighting is optional. Moonlight may be enough for the view you want. Where it is not, UF/IFAS lists solar and other energy-efficient outdoor lights for walkways or for accenting plants, and Illinois Extension mentions low-output or solar fixtures. Keep the light low and aimed at the path or the plants, not into the sky or toward neighboring windows.

Safety, spread, and winter survival

Suitability is not only a matter of looks. Some plants that appear on broad moon-garden lists are tender tropicals that may need to be brought indoors over winter or replaced each year. UC Cooperative Extension advises checking the care expectations before you buy.

The same UC Cooperative Extension guidance warns about several plants that often appear on night-garden lists but are not among the seven above. Lily-of-the-valley can spread aggressively. The white berries of night-blooming jasmine are toxic, and all parts of angel’s trumpet are poisonous. If children or pets use the garden, check every plant’s toxicity before you add it.

Choosing plants for your region

  • Confirm whether each plant is a perennial, an annual, or a tender plant in your climate.
  • Match sun and shade needs to the actual light in the planned bed, not to the light in the photo.
  • Check soil moisture and drainage, since Clemson Extension treats these as decisive for plant choice.
  • Stagger bloom times so the garden has something open across more of the season.
  • If you want night pollinators, favor native species and keep outdoor lighting low.
  • Check toxicity and spreading habits before planting near play areas or in open ground.
