What account does Kasa use?
Kasa Smart uses a TP-Link ID. In older documentation, this may appear as a Kasa account or Kasa cloud account. The login is normally an email address—not your Wi-Fi name, Wi-Fi password, device name, Amazon account, Google account, or Apple ID.

A TP-Link ID may also be used with Tapo, Deco, Tether, Omada, VIGI, and other TP-Link services, although availability can vary by region. See TP-Link’s TP-Link ID guide and account-management guidance.

Do these checks before changing anything
- Check the spelling of the email address and try the address that originally received Kasa setup or activation messages.
- Consider alternate addresses, email aliases, Apple Hide My Email addresses, work accounts, and a family member’s email.
- Turn off Caps Lock and type the password manually once so password-manager autofill cannot insert an old password.
- Make sure the phone has internet access. Try cellular data instead of Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi instead of cellular data.
- Temporarily disable a VPN, DNS filter, firewall, or ad-blocking network profile if the sign-in page will not load. Restore it afterward.
- Set the phone’s date and time automatically.
- Force-close Kasa and reopen it.
A login failure is different from a device being offline. Login problems concern account authentication or the app; an offline plug, bulb, switch, or camera usually requires separate device, router, or cloud-connection troubleshooting.

Reset a forgotten Kasa password
Using the Kasa app
- Open Kasa and go to the Log In screen.
- Tap Forgot Password?
- Enter the email address used as your TP-Link ID and tap Send.
- Open the message from TP-Link and select Click to Reset Password.
- Enter and confirm a new password, then save it.
- Return to Kasa and tap PASSWORD IS RESET, if that button appears.
- Sign in with the new password.
These labels come from TP-Link’s current documented recovery flow, but the wording can differ between iOS, Android, regions, and app versions. TP-Link says to use Resend if the email has not arrived within about 60 seconds; that is a troubleshooting prompt, not a guarantee of delivery time. See TP-Link’s password-reset instructions.
Using a browser
Open the TP-Link Cloud login page, enter your TP-Link ID email address, and follow the password-reset instructions. Browser recovery is useful because it helps distinguish an account problem from a Kasa app problem.
Because the TP-Link ID is shared across TP-Link services, changing its password may also affect sign-in to other services that use the same account.
If the reset email never arrives
- Confirm that the address you entered is the original TP-Link ID email.
- Search every folder for “TP-Link,” “reset,” or “password.” Check spam, junk, promotions, quarantine, and work or school mail filters.
- Wait briefly, then use Resend rather than repeatedly submitting requests.
- Open only the newest reset message. Older links may no longer work.
- Check whether your email provider blocks automated messages.
- Try recovery through the TP-Link Cloud website.
If you cannot access the account email, or no message arrives after these checks, contact TP-Link Support.

If you are creating an account for the first time
- Open Kasa and choose Create Account or Create a TP-Link ID.
- Enter the requested information and accept the applicable terms.
- Submit the registration.
- Open the activation email and select its activation link.
- Return to Kasa and sign in.
A new account must be activated through its email link. If the activation message is missing, check spam and junk folders. You can also use TP-Link’s web registration page. Password requirements can change, so follow the current requirements shown in the app rather than relying on older character limits.
If Kasa says the password or account is invalid
The message does not necessarily mean the Kasa service deleted your account. Common causes include:
- You entered a different email address from the one used during setup.
- The account was never activated.
- A password manager supplied an outdated password.
- You entered the home Wi-Fi password instead of the TP-Link ID password.
- The password was changed through another TP-Link service.
- You are attempting to use a third-party login instead of the TP-Link email-and-password sign-in.
- The app or TP-Link authentication service is temporarily malfunctioning.
Re-enter the email manually, use Forgot Password?, and try browser recovery. Do not assume that creating another account will restore the existing device list.
If you can log in but your devices are missing
This usually points to the wrong TP-Link ID, not deleted devices. Sign out and retry with the email used for the original setup. Ask whether another household member, installer, former homeowner, or family member created the account.

TP-Link states that a Kasa device is bound to one account at a time, while the same account can be used on multiple phones. The relevant FAQ was updated earlier than some current app versions, so exact transfer behavior can vary by product and software version. See TP-Link’s account and device-binding guidance.
Do not factory-reset every device just because the list is empty. Resetting can erase Wi-Fi settings, schedules, scenes, and other configuration. If a device is bound to an inaccessible account, use product-specific sharing or transfer instructions, or contact TP-Link.
Switch between Kasa accounts
- Open Kasa and go to the account or Me section.
- Sign out of the current TP-Link ID.
- Sign in with the other TP-Link ID.
TP-Link says only one account can be logged into the Kasa app at a time. The same account can be used on multiple phones, but sharing credentials is less secure than using official device-sharing features when available.
Recommended Free Tools
If Kasa works on one phone but not another
- Confirm the exact TP-Link ID email on both phones.
- Type the password manually once.
- Update Kasa through the phone’s official app store.
- Force-close Kasa and restart the phone.
- Try a different network.
- Temporarily disable VPN or filtering software.
- Check app permissions and the phone’s date and time.
- Reinstall Kasa only after confirming that you know the correct credentials.
Some accounts, app versions, or TP-Link security configurations may request an additional verification code. TP-Link’s current reviewed documentation is not a universal Kasa two-factor-authentication specification, so the exact prompt may differ. Never share a verification code. If an unexpected code or login alert appears, change the password and contact TP-Link if necessary.

If the app freezes, crashes, or will not load the login screen
- Force-close Kasa, restart the phone, and update the app.
- Check available phone storage.
- Try another internet connection.
- Temporarily disable VPN, firewall, or content-filtering software.
- On Android, clear Kasa’s cache first.
- On iPhone, reinstall the app only after confirming the TP-Link ID and password.
- Use browser-based account recovery to test whether the account itself works.
Clearing app data or uninstalling Kasa can remove local session information. Neither is a password-recovery method. TP-Link’s connectivity guidance also recommends alternate networks, phones, and checks for VPN or firewall interference.
Separate phone, account, and device connection problems
- Phone internet: Can the phone open other websites or apps?
- Account authentication: Can Kasa or the TP-Link Cloud page accept the TP-Link ID?
- Device connectivity: After login, can Kasa communicate with the device?
If the first layer fails, troubleshoot the phone or network. If the second fails, recover the account. If login succeeds but a device remains offline, move to Kasa device and router troubleshooting instead of repeatedly resetting the password. No current TP-Link outage should be assumed without confirmation through an official support channel.
When to contact TP-Link
Escalate if you no longer control the account email, reset messages never arrive, the account may be compromised or locked, devices remain bound to an inaccessible account, correct credentials fail on multiple devices and networks, or the cloud device list is unexpectedly empty.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Kasa account the same as a TP-Link ID?
Yes. Kasa login generally uses the email-based TP-Link ID system, although older documentation may call it a Kasa or Kasa cloud account.
Can I use one Kasa account on two phones?
Yes. TP-Link says the same account can be used on multiple phones, though only one account is logged into the Kasa app at a time.
Is the Kasa Wi-Fi password the same as my account password?
No. The Wi-Fi password connects the device to your router; the TP-Link ID password authenticates your Kasa account.

Will reinstalling Kasa delete my devices?
Reinstalling normally does not transfer or erase cloud ownership, but it removes local app data and sessions. Confirm your TP-Link ID credentials before reinstalling.
What if I no longer have access to the account email?
Contact TP-Link Support. Creating a new account will not automatically recover devices associated with the inaccessible account.
