Trick Out Your Drill Press: Practical Upgrades for Woodworking

A larger table, fence, stops, clamps, and well-matched dust collection can make a drill press more useful. Check your machine’s dimensions and interfaces before buying.

The most useful way to trick out a drill press is to improve four things: stock support, repeat positioning, secure workholding, and chip or dust control. Start with a compatible auxiliary table and fence, then add stops and clamps for the work you actually do. Check the geometry of your specific press before buying: drill press accessories are not universal.

Start with a larger drill press table and fence

An auxiliary table gives boards and panels more support than a small factory table. Many systems also provide a replaceable insert to protect the table from accidental bit contact. A fence registers stock against a consistent edge, making it easier to position a series of holes.

Before choosing a drill press table and fence, check the machine rather than relying on a product’s general fit claim:

  • Measure the factory table and note its T-slot or through-slot pattern and attachment points.
  • Check clearance around the column, the elevation crank, and any handles or controls.
  • Confirm whether the factory table still needs to tilt or rotate, and whether the auxiliary table leaves room to do so.
  • Compare the auxiliary table’s column opening and footprint with your press and the stock you plan to support.

For example, Woodpeckers describes its DP-PRO system in 36- and 48-inch configurations, with a 5-inch column opening. The manufacturer says its base slots align with most drill press tables and that the system raises the auxiliary surface by four inches to clear long elevation cranks. Those are manufacturer compatibility claims, not a guarantee of fit on every press. Its separate table package is described as a 16-by-23-inch table with a 36-inch fence, six flip stops, and two clamps, designed for presses of 12 inches and larger. Treat these as examples to compare against your machine, not universal sizing rules. Woodpeckers DP-PRO system Woodpeckers table package

Add a fence and stops for repeatable hole locations

A fence establishes a consistent reference edge; a flip stop sets a repeatable distance along that fence. Together, they help position multiple holes without measuring each one from scratch. Stops improve positioning, but they do not secure a workpiece against rotation.

When comparing a fence, check its length and height, how it attaches to the table, whether its T-track accepts the hardware you plan to use, and whether a compatible stop is included or sold separately. Also make sure the opening leaves clearance for the bits or accessories you use. Infinity Cutting Tools describes its DPF-200 as a 23-inch-long, 3-inch-high aluminum fence with T-track attachments, an opening for sanding drums and Forstner bits, and a purpose-made flip stop. Its dust port can be positioned at either end. Infinity Professional Drill Press Fence with Dust Port

Secure the workpiece before drilling

A drill press vise or suitable T-slot clamps help keep stock from spinning or shifting. Choose hardware that matches your table’s slots and leaves enough room to position the work. A fence can register stock, but it is not a substitute for holding the workpiece securely—particularly when the piece is small, irregular, or oversized.

Oliver Machinery’s 10062 manual directs operators to secure work with a drill vise or T-slot clamps, lock the table after adjustment, and support oversized workpieces to prevent tipping. Its instruction is explicit: “Never hold the workpiece by hand during operation.” Oliver Machinery 10062 Drill Press Manual

Plan dust collection around your hose and table

A dust port built into a fence or table can collect chips near the drilling area and help keep the work surface visible. Check the port diameter and location against your vacuum or dust-collector hose before buying. Infinity says the DPF-200 port can be moved to either end of the fence and notes that collection performance depends on the extraction system and hose diameter. Woodpeckers lists a 2-1/4-inch fitting on its DP-PRO system; confirm that your hose arrangement can connect to it. These product details do not establish a particular level of extraction performance. Choose convenience features selectively

Lights and laser center finders can make the work area easier to see and help with setup, but the cited examples are features on particular drill press models—not proof of universal retrofit kits. Grizzly’s T31739 listing describes a laser and LED work light; its T34611 listing describes a laser, LED light, depth stop, and chuck guard. If your press lacks one of these features, check its manufacturer’s accessory and wiring guidance before attempting an addition. Grizzly drill press listings Grizzly T34611

O'SKOOL Drill Press Table with Adjustable Aluminum Fence and Flip Stop
  • Expanded Work Support: This drill press table adds a 23-5/8 x 15 x 1 in MDF surface over an existing cast-iron table, providing more room to support and position wood workpieces during drilling
  • Reposition the Drill Press Fence with More Control: Low-friction tape reduces direct contact between the 23-1/2 in aluminum fence and MDF surface, while the guide bar and bearings help guide movement during adjustment
  • Set Repeated Hole Locations with Less Re-Measuring: Use the insert reference line to relate the fence to the drill-bit position, then set the flip stop as an end reference for similar workpieces
  • Clamps And Replaceable Insert: Two 15 in T-tracks position the included 0–2-1/2 in hold-down clamps. Replace the worn 4 x 4 x 3/8 in sacrificial insert with 3/8 in plywood or MDF, then use the four leveling screws to set it flush

Replace a chuck only after checking the interfaces

A new chuck must match the arbor, and the arbor’s taper must mate correctly with the spindle. Check the manual for your exact drill press model and verify the chuck, arbor, and spindle taper specifications before ordering. Oliver’s manual explains the chuck-and-arbor fit requirements; a chuck that appears similar is not enough to establish compatibility. Oliver Machinery chuck and arbor guidance

  • Clamp or vise the workpiece; never hold it by hand while drilling.
  • Lock the table after adjustment and support large work so it cannot tip. Use a backing board when appropriate to reduce tear-out.
  • Remove the chuck key before starting. Disconnect power before changing bits, following your machine’s manual.
  • Use a bit suited to the material and follow the cutter maker’s speed guidance. Oliver’s manual warns against exceeding the cutter’s maximum speed.
  • Wear appropriate eye protection; keep loose clothing and jewelry away from rotating parts, and secure long hair.
  • Do not use a drill press as a milling machine or apply sideways cutting forces with milling bits; the machine manual warns that this can damage the press and dislodge the chuck. Oliver Machinery 10062 Drill Press Manual Drill press safety guidance
