Choose a plan that fits your room and seating needs, then check its joinery, drawing scale, cut list and assembly guidance before buying materials. The plans below range from a 28-inch-deep design to tops around 35–36 inches wide, and they use different approaches that should not be mixed into one set of instructions.
What makes a dining table a trestle table?
A trestle table has end supports connected by a lengthwise stretcher beneath the tabletop. That basic arrangement leaves the space between the supports open, but the proportions, joints and assembly details vary from plan to plan. The examples here are distinct designs, not interchangeable construction instructions.
Compare the plans by size and included guidance
| Plan | Specified dimensions | Format and included detail | Joinery or skill information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Woodcraft paper trestle table plan, model FD-147 | 35 in. wide × 72 in. long × 29½ in. high, as stated on Woodcraft’s listing; year not stated. | Paper plan; the listing identifies the model, but the cited information does not specify a cut-list or assembly-guide package. | Woodcraft describes keyed tenons for this design. |
| WOOD Magazine downloadable plan | 36 × 72 in. tabletop, per the plan description; finished height not stated there. | Downloadable plan; featured in WOOD Issue 28, April 1989. The article page was published March 31, 2020. | WOOD says wooden pins join the stretcher to the uprights. |
| Fine Woodworking “Trestle Table Project Plan,” listed by Peachtree Woodworking Supply | 28 in. deep × 71 5/16 in. wide × 29 in. tall, per the retailer listing; year not stated. | Complete cut list, full-size and scale drawings, and a building guide, according to the listing. | Listed as intermediate; the listing emphasizes through-mortise-and-tenon guidance. |
| Woodcraft table-and-bench plan | Table: 35 × 72 × 29½ in. Bench: 15 × 60 × 18 in., per Woodcraft’s listing; year not stated. | Full-size patterns, joinery shown at actual size, materials and cutting list, exploded diagram, and hardware requirements. Woodcraft says the full-size plan allows patterns to be traced directly on the wood. | Woodcraft describes keyed tenons for the table design. |
| Wood and Shop Civil War Trestle Dining Table plan | Finished dimensions not stated in the cited listing information. | 30-page digital PDF with Imperial and Metric versions, cut list, measurements, exploded views and joinery details; described by the seller as designed for a first dining-table build. | The seller presents it for a first dining-table build; specific skill prerequisites are not stated. |
These dimensions belong to the named plans. Do not use one plan’s measurements with another plan’s joints or instructions. For a useful comparison, first check whether the footprint and height suit the room, then compare the type and completeness of the drawings and instructions.
How to choose a plan for your build
Match the footprint and seating needs
Measure the available floor area and consider how many people need to sit at the table. The listed examples include 35 × 72-inch and 36 × 72-inch tops, as well as a design listed at 28 inches deep by 71 5/16 inches wide. These are examples, not a universal recommended size. Fine Woodworking’s guide to a trestle table with breadboard ends notes that dimensions can be modified to seat more or fewer people; use that project’s guidance rather than assuming its changes apply to another plan.

Compare the finished height as well as the top dimensions. The listed Woodcraft table is 29½ inches high, while the Fine Woodworking plan listing gives 29 inches. A difference of half an inch may affect how the table feels with your chairs, so check the plan’s specified finished dimensions against your intended seating.
Choose a plan whose drawings match your experience
Full-size patterns can help transfer shapes directly to stock; scale drawings require you to interpret or reproduce dimensions accurately. A cut list helps organize stock preparation, while exploded views clarify how the parts relate. Look for an assembly or building guide if you need the steps explained, not just the components shown. The Fine Woodworking listing explicitly identifies the project as intermediate and includes a complete cut list, full-size and scale drawings, and a building guide. Wood and Shop describes its 30-page PDF as intended for a first dining-table build.

Check the joinery and required tools
Joinery is design-specific. The cited plans include keyed tenons, wooden pins joining the stretcher to the uprights, and through mortise-and-tenon joints. These methods call for different layouts and execution; the plan you choose should explain its own joint dimensions and process. Do not substitute a joint from another design based only on the fact that both tables are trestle tables.
For a table that may need to move, distinguish permanent joinery from a design intended to come apart. Christian Becksvoort’s Shaker table article describes bed bolts for knockdown assembly. It explains that the single center stretcher leaves vertical leg room and that bed bolts allow that trestle design to be dismantled for moving or storage. Those details apply to that Shaker design, not automatically to the other plans.

Build from one complete plan, not a blend of examples
- Confirm the finished dimensions. Verify the plan’s top size and height against your room, chairs and seating needs.
- Check what the plan actually supplies. Identify whether it includes full-size patterns, scale drawings, a cut list, exploded views, joinery details and assembly instructions.
- Review the specified joints and hardware. Confirm that you can make the joints and use the tools the design requires; follow the selected plan’s details.
- Follow that plan for tabletop attachment. The cited sources do not establish one universal tabletop attachment method or a comprehensive wood-movement specification. Inspect the chosen plan’s instructions rather than inferring an attachment detail from another design.
- Keep all dimensions and construction details together. Do not combine the measurements of one table with the joinery or assembly sequence of another.
