How to compare prices fairly
Build one matched basket
List the products, specifications, quantities and acceptable alternatives for the job. Match like with like: a different grade, size, finish or pack quantity can make two prices incomparable. If you are open to substitutions, ask both merchants to quote the same alternatives rather than accepting an unrecorded substitution in one quote.
Include all the items that affect the order, not just the headline materials. Think through the whole collection trip. A branch that is convenient for one item may be less practical if another line must be collected elsewhere, and a stated readiness estimate does not tell you whether all lines in a mixed order are available together. Confirm whether the order is ready as a complete basket or whether any item has a different status. If you need to make more than one journey, include that practical consequence in the decision rather than comparing only the material subtotal.
When delivery makes sense
