Travertine can be a beautiful choice for floors, walls, and some outdoor spaces, but it is not a one-size-fits-all tile. It is a form of limestone, so it is acid-sensitive, and its absorption and suitability vary by stone. Choose it based on the specific product, finish, location, and installation—not appearance alone.
What is travertine tile?
Travertine is a calcium-carbonate-based, terrestrial form of limestone. Although people sometimes call it “travertine marble,” it is not marble. The Natural Stone Institute’s limestone guidance explains the distinction and notes that limestone and travertine can be vulnerable to alteration by mild acids.
Travertine’s natural character varies from product to product. Color, surface, finish, and physical properties are not uniform across all stone sold under the same name. A sample can help you judge appearance, but it does not replace technical information about the actual tile.
Is travertine tile durable?
It can be suitable for a planned application, but “durable” depends on the particular stone, finish, exposure, installation, and care. The Natural Stone Institute reports that absorption among limestone and travertine varieties ranges from slight—less than 1%—to high—more than 10%. That broad range is not a specification for any individual tile; ask the supplier for product-specific physical-property data relevant to your project.

The Institute’s limestone resource and its 2024 Dimension Stone Design Manual listing are useful starting points for understanding stone properties, finishes, and repairs. For a selection decision, match the actual product’s data to the intended use rather than relying on a general claim about travertine.
Where can travertine be used?
Travertine and limestone are used in interior and exterior applications, but suitability depends on the variety and its exposure. An interior wall, an indoor floor, a wet area, and exterior paving pose different demands; confirm the product is recommended for the exact location and assembly.

Interior floors and walls
For an indoor application, compare the stone’s properties and finish with the expected use and care. Ask the supplier whether the selected tile is appropriate for the room and whether the finish affects its recommended maintenance. The Natural Stone Institute’s limestone guidance describes the range of possible properties, while the 2024 manual listing identifies finishes and physical and mechanical properties among its travertine topics.
Outdoor paving
Do not assume that a stone suitable indoors will perform outdoors. The Institute cautions that relatively few limestone varieties have a successful history in exterior paving, particularly where freeze/thaw conditions occur. Before choosing travertine outdoors, verify the specific product’s suitability for paving and the local climate with the supplier or stone professional.

How should you compare travertine tiles?
Compare products against the conditions they will face, not just their color or price. Ask the stone supplier or installer for information tied to the specific tile and project.
- Stone and technical data: Request product-specific absorption and other relevant physical-property information. Do not apply the full range reported for limestone and travertine to every product.
- Location and exposure: State whether the tile is for an interior floor or wall, a wet area, or exterior paving, and whether freezing conditions are expected.
- Finish and surface: Confirm the finish and how it affects the intended use and care. A sealer can also affect texture or appearance.
- Installation assembly: Discuss the tile, substrate, and project conditions with the installer so the method fits the actual assembly.
- Maintenance expectations: Consider acid sensitivity and decide on sealing only after checking guidance for the stone and the sealer.
The Natural Stone Institute’s Natural Stone Tile handout puts the selection and installation approach simply: “Know your stone. Know the proper installation method. Set proper expectations.”

Does travertine tile need to be sealed?
Not always. Sealing is a product- and situation-specific choice, not a universal requirement. The Natural Stone Institute’s stone care guidance says proper sealing can help protect against everyday dirt and spills in some cases, while other stone may be best left untreated.
Ask whether the particular tile should be sealed and use only a product identified as compatible with that stone and finish. Topical sealers may change the surface texture or finish and can build up, so consider their effect before applying one. Follow the stone supplier’s and sealer manufacturer’s instructions.

How do you clean and care for travertine?
Because travertine is calcium-carbonate based, avoid mild acids unless the stone and product manufacturers explicitly approve them. Acidic products can alter the stone. For routine care, follow guidance for the specific tile and the labels on any cleaner or treatment you use.
The Natural Stone Institute’s consumer care resource covers cleaning, sealing, stains, and stain removal. If you are unsure how to address a spill or stain, check with the supplier or a stone-care professional before trying a treatment that could affect the finish.
What should you confirm before installation?
There is no single installation method that can be recommended without knowing the tile, substrate, room, and full assembly. The Natural Stone Institute’s tile handout emphasizes knowing the stone and using the proper method. It points readers to the Tile Council of North America Handbook and the Dimension Stone Design Manual for further guidance.
Quick Recap
- Identify the exact stone and product. Have the supplier provide technical information for the tile you plan to install.
- Describe the location and exposure. Specify the room or outdoor area, expected conditions, and any freeze/thaw exposure.
- Review the assembly with the installer. Confirm that the substrate and installation method are appropriate for the particular stone and project.
- Agree on finish and care. Clarify whether sealing is recommended, which products are compatible, and how the installed surface should be maintained.
