Yes—you can turn an unused Android tablet or iPad into a basic indoor security camera. You will need a camera app, reliable Wi-Fi, continuous power, a safe mounting position, and a second device or web browser for viewing. This works well for monitoring a room, pet, entryway, home office, or temporary work area, but it is not a full replacement for an outdoor, tamper-resistant, or professionally monitored security system.
What you need
- A tablet with a working front or rear camera

Check the tablet before you begin
- Update the tablet as far as its manufacturer safely allows.
- Open the standard Camera app and test the lens, image, and microphone.
- Clean the camera lens and decide whether the front or rear camera gives the better view.
- Connect to the intended Wi-Fi network and test its signal where the tablet will be installed.
- Set a strong device passcode and remove unnecessary accounts and apps.
- Inspect the battery and case carefully.
Do not use a tablet with a swollen, damaged, unusually hot, or rapidly draining battery. A lifting screen or case can indicate battery swelling. Do not leave such a device charging unattended. Lithium-ion batteries can overheat and enter thermal runaway; safety information is available from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

- Install AlfredCamera from the official Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Install it on the phone, tablet, or computer you will use for viewing, or use the service’s supported web viewer.
- Sign in or follow the current pairing process.
- Choose Camera on the old tablet and Viewer on the monitoring device.
- Complete the in-app pairing process, which Alfred documents as QR-code based.
- Grant camera, microphone, notification, and any other permissions required for the features you choose.
- Position the tablet, connect power, and test live view before leaving it unattended.

Permissions and privacy controls
Android
Review permissions at Settings → Apps → [camera app] → Permissions. On supported Android versions, you can also use Settings → Security & Privacy → Privacy → Permission manager. Grant camera and microphone access only to the monitoring app and enable notifications if you need alerts (Google’s Android permission guide).
iPad
Review access at Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. iPadOS shows a green indicator when the camera is in use and an orange indicator when the microphone is being used without the camera (Apple’s hardware-access guide).

On supported iPadOS versions, App Privacy Report can help show camera, microphone, and network activity. It is a useful audit tool, not a guarantee that an app is suitable for sensitive monitoring (Apple privacy controls).
Configure the tablet to stay active
A camera app may stop when the tablet sleeps or the operating system restricts background activity. Android 9 and later generally restrict ordinary background apps from accessing the camera or microphone, and modern apps may need an appropriate foreground service (Android privacy documentation; foreground-service guidance).
- Set the screen timeout to the longest practical period.
- Disable extreme power-saving modes.
- Allow notifications for the camera app.
- Where available, exempt the app from aggressive battery optimization or app-sleep controls.
- Keep the app in the foreground if its documentation requires it.
- Test operation after the screen turns off rather than assuming it will continue.
Menu names differ between Android manufacturers and operating-system versions. iPad multitasking and background-execution rules can also affect capture. Verify the actual behavior on your model.

Position and power the tablet safely
- Aim at a defined zone such as a doorway, hallway, pet area, crib, office, or tool-storage area.
- Avoid direct sunlight, reflective glass, mirrors, television screens, and bright windows.
- Use a stable stand or mount high enough to prevent accidental knocks.
- Leave ventilation around the tablet.
- Secure the charging cable so children, pets, or passing feet cannot pull it down.
- Never place the tablet under bedding, inside an enclosed cabinet, or against a heater.
Apple’s safety guidance warns against conditions that promote unsafe heat or charging, including placing devices under bedding (Apple guidance). Stop using the setup if the tablet becomes very hot, the display lifts, the battery drains while plugged in, the charger becomes unusually hot, or the device repeatedly shuts down.

A mount improves placement; it does not add weather resistance, infrared illumination, or tamper protection.
Choose the right recording and alert mode
- Live view: You open the feed manually.
- Motion detection: The app identifies movement and may notify you or save an event.
- Sound detection: The app reacts to audio such as a cry or loud noise.
- Event recording: Short clips are saved around detected activity.
- Continuous recording: The device records for long periods, using more power, bandwidth, storage, and possibly cloud capacity.
Start with event-based recording. It generally uses fewer resources and makes important clips easier to find. Do not assume that detection is perfect: lighting, camera angle, hardware, sensitivity, and subscription tier all affect results.

Test the setup
- Walk through the entire field of view.
- Confirm that the viewer receives a motion alert.
- Repeat from another angle.
- Test low light and sound alerts if enabled.
- Disconnect Wi-Fi briefly, then reconnect it.
- Unplug power briefly and check whether monitoring resumes.
- Confirm that clips are actually saved and playable.
- Repeat the test with the screen locked.
Reduce false alerts
Moving curtains, shadows, headlights, fans, and television screens can trigger motion detection. To improve results:
- Reposition the tablet away from windows.
- Reduce the detection zone to the area that matters.
- Lower sensitivity if the app permits it.
- Use activity schedules.
- Improve lighting and avoid rapidly changing exposure.
- Use person or zone detection only when your device and plan support it.
Secure the feed
- Use a unique password for the camera-service account.
- Enable two-factor authentication when available.
- Use WPA2 or WPA3 Wi-Fi with a strong password.
- Avoid public Wi-Fi for a permanent camera.
- Keep both the tablet and viewer device updated.
- Disable audio if you do not need it.
- Review account sessions and permissions periodically.
- Delete clips that are no longer needed.
- Factory-reset the tablet before disposal or resale.
There are three separate privacy surfaces: the physical tablet, the app account, and the service provider. Someone with physical access may alter the tablet; a stolen password may expose the feed; and a cloud provider may process video, account metadata, diagnostics, identifiers, or user content according to its current policies. Alfred’s App Store privacy label lists categories including purchase history, contact information, identifiers, usage data, diagnostics, and user-content-related data; review the current label and privacy policy before signup.

Understand internet, power, and evidence limits
Remote viewing and cloud recording may fail if the provider has an outage, the account is logged out, a subscription expires, the router fails, or the internet connection drops. A local camera app may continue on the home network in some configurations, but remote access requires additional setup and should not be exposed directly to the public internet without understanding authentication, encryption, and router security.
A tablet camera is not tamper-proof. Theft, a damaged charger, a crashed app, storage exhaustion, power loss, or a broken network can interrupt monitoring or destroy locally stored clips. A reputable, correctly rated backup-power solution may help with short outages, but it does not replace a complete backup-recording system.

Choose it when you already own the tablet, need one indoor camera, want occasional remote viewing, can provide safe power, and accept dependence on an app or cloud service. It is especially useful as a temporary monitor during travel, for a pet or child, or for a single room or indoor work area.

For high-risk property or emergency-response needs, use purpose-built or professionally integrated security hardware rather than relying on a tablet alone.
