Mix garden beds and pots to suit your space, then arrange the houses and plants so the miniature details stay visible as the garden grows.
Choose a spot and plan the village
Start with the space you have: a shady nook beside a tree, an existing flower bed, a lawn edge, or a patio where a planter can sit. In-ground scenes feel settled into the garden; a container keeps the display compact and movable. For an outdoor planter, choose a weather-suitable pot with drainage holes, as recommended in The Home Depot’s fairy garden guide.
Before planting or attaching anything, lay out the houses, stones, and plants where you expect them to go. Check that the miniature doors and paths can be seen from the usual viewing spot. For a planted display, select plants with compatible light and water needs, and account for their mature size: taller plants can shade smaller ones or hide a house. Put larger plants behind or around structures, and keep low ground cover toward the front.
- Use flat stones to create small levels and pebbles or gravel to suggest paths.
- Repeat a color or plant type in several scenes to make them feel like one village, while varying each house and station.
- Leave room to reach plants for watering and maintenance.
Make a tiny gnome house
Choose a house material based on the look you want and how exposed the spot will be. Natural-material houses can use sticks, stones, clay, flowers, and natural-fiber string; a reused-bottle version can be cut and decorated with paint or markers. For either approach, build a stable base before adding small details.

Natural-material cottage
For a woodland cottage lane, gather sticks, stones, clay, natural-fiber string, and found decorations. MASS MoCA Kidspace’s fairy and gnome house tutorial describes natural materials for these miniature structures. A quiet, shady area near a tree suits the woodland look. Arrange the stones and sticks into a sturdy base and walls before adding a roof, flowers, or other decoration.
Recycled-bottle house
For a brighter hamlet, clean and reuse small plastic bottles as house forms. Cut and decorate them with paint or markers, then secure pieces with glue or tape. The Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park’s bottle-house activity also suggests optional bottle-cap furniture and a simple fence. If using hot glue, children should get adult permission and help, as the conservancy directs.

Do not assume a craft house will withstand rain. The Home Depot guide notes that cardboard-based houses are vulnerable to rain; bring them indoors or cover them when wet weather threatens. Treat other homemade materials according to their actual outdoor suitability rather than calling them weatherproof without a rated material and finish.
Build five distinct village scenes
1. Woodland cottage lane
Set one or more natural-material houses in a shady nook or beside a tree. Use stones as a foundation and path edging, then add sticks, clay, or string to define the cottage. Keep the base firm enough that the small pieces do not shift when you water nearby plants.

2. Recycled-bottle hamlet
Make several bottle houses in different shapes or colors and group them along a short gravel or pebble path. Bottle caps can become miniature furniture, or a row of small decorations can suggest a fence. This is a way to reuse clean packaging, but plan for the glue, paint, and other materials to face the actual conditions of the display area.
3. Container village
Fill a weather-suitable planter with drainage holes with compatible small plants, a miniature house, and gravel, stones, or moss-like ground cover. Arrange the house where it will remain visible as the plants grow. A container works well on a porch or patio and can be moved for garden work or when conditions change.

4. Stepping-stone main street
Place small scenes in separate pots or along an accessible bed, then connect them visually with flat rocks or pavers. Twigs and string can form miniature bridges between pots. Repeat a few colors or plant types to make the stations feel related, but vary the houses or details so each stop has its own character.
5. Evergreen guardian gnome
Make a larger foliage-covered gnome as a landmark behind or beside the smaller houses. A bucket or pot, wire frame, evergreen branches, floral wire or twine, and small accessories can form the structure. Secure the branches to the frame and use ballast in the container if needed to keep the figure steady. Pruners and wire cutters may help with this larger build.

Smithsonian Gardens lead horticulturist Janet Draper’s guide to making a garden gnome says not to collect branches from parks, roadsides, or public gardens. For found nature materials used temporarily, Oregon Metro’s outdoor nature activities guidance recommends taking only dead or loose items and returning temporary materials afterward.

Care for live plants according to their species’ needs, and check the display as they grow. If leaves start to hide a doorway or path, gently prune the plant where appropriate or move the miniature piece. Water with care around small houses and loose paths so the layout stays in place.
For practical project ideas and options for making décor yourself, see Fairy Garden DIY’s guide to making a gnome garden, published in 2022 and updated in 2022. The five scenes here are combinations of miniature-garden techniques, not one fixed design: adapt their materials, plants, and placement to your local conditions and available space.
