Choose its size and location around the way you want to use the space, the plants that suit your climate, and the maintenance you can keep up with. A sound plan also accounts for runoff, electricity, and child access before construction begins.
Choose a scale and a site that work for your yard
Start with the footprint you can accommodate and the upkeep you want. A large watertight container can add a small water accent; a preformed shell or flexible liner can make a larger pond possible. A patio or another visible spot can make the feature easier to enjoy, but visibility is only one consideration.
Before settling on a location, check how leaves and other debris will reach the water, whether surface runoff could flow into it, the ground slope, access to electricity if you plan to use a pump or lights, and how people—especially young children—move through the yard. Mississippi State Extension advises preventing soil and water runoff from entering a pond. UF/IFAS recommends a visible location with some shade while ensuring enough light for the plants you choose; the right balance depends on the site and planting plan.

Plan the build around water movement and safe access
If you want a fountain or waterfall, include its intended flow and the circulation equipment in the design rather than treating them as later add-ons. Pump choice depends on pond volume and feature design; the cited guidance does not identify one universally correct model or capacity. A pump is commonly used to circulate water and support aeration, while a filter is a separate, design-dependent choice.
Open water and electricity need to be addressed before the feature is operating. Oklahoma State University Extension recommends preventing toddler access to a pond and using ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets for pond pumps and lights. Pond liners can be slippery. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and local electrical requirements, and never treat a backyard pond as safe for unsupervised children.

- Floating plants sit on the water surface.
- Submerged plants grow below the surface.
- Emergent plants root in shallow water while their foliage rises above it.
Match each plant to the water depth it needs, the available light, and your local growing conditions. Some rooted plants need several inches of water over the crown; others tolerate damp soil. Check local invasive-plant guidance before purchasing or moving aquatic plants.

Winter behavior varies by plant and climate. Illinois Extension notes that hardy water lilies tolerate surface freezing when their roots remain below the deepest freeze. That is not a universal winter-care plan: regional guidance, including Florida-specific advice, may not apply to a cold-climate pond.
Plants can take up nutrients and shade the water, helping limit algae pressure. Mississippi State Extension gives “up to 40% of the pond surface or subsurface” as a rule of thumb for plant coverage—not a guaranteed balance for every pond. Excess fish feeding and nutrient-rich runoff can add to algae problems.

Decide whether your garden needs a filter
Circulation and filtration are related but not interchangeable. UF/IFAS describes a pump as necessary to move and aerate pond water. Filters can help remove debris and support cleaner water, but Oklahoma State Extension notes that a well-balanced garden with many plants and modest fish numbers may not need extra filtration.
- Mechanical filtration traps debris.
- Biological filtration provides a place for beneficial bacteria.
Choose equipment for the pond’s size, planned water feature, plants, and fish—not as a universal package. Equipment by itself does not correct excess nutrients, unmanaged debris, or an unbalanced design.

Set a maintenance routine before filling the pond
Expect routine attention rather than a maintenance-free feature. Mississippi State Extension recommends removing leaves and excess vegetation; also check that pumps and any filters are functioning and replenish water when drought or evaporation lowers the level. If you keep fish, avoid excessive stocking and feeding. Seasonal plant and fish care depends on local climate and should follow guidance for your region.

If algae appears, start with the conditions feeding it: review plant cover, debris, runoff, and fish feeding. UF/IFAS suggests adding plants and rocks as initial steps and treats algicide as a last resort. Use only a product labeled for the intended pond and compatible with its fish and plants, and follow the label.

Even a well-kept feature may need mosquito checks. UC Integrated Pest Management recommends an integrated approach: promote circulation, remove excess vegetation and organic debris, and consider suitable biological controls. Its guidance notes that mosquito larvae prefer shallow water under 24 inches and that deeper designs and steep drop-offs are less favorable. That observation is not a recommendation to choose a particular depth; depth must also suit the plants, construction, safety needs, and local requirements.
Bti products, including mosquito dunks where labeled for the intended use, are an option for larval control. Follow the product label and account for fish and other wildlife. Illinois Extension also describes Bti for standing water that cannot be removed. Do not release non-native fish into natural waters; UC guidance specifically warns against releasing mosquito fish into natural water bodies in California.

Mississippi State Extension writes, “Rarely does a well-functioning pond add to the mosquito population.” That reassurance assumes good management: stagnant pockets, accumulated organic debris, or neglected vegetation can still create places for larvae.
Check local guidance before you build or stock
Plant suitability, winter care, pesticide labels, and electrical requirements vary by location. Extension advice is often region-specific, so consult guidance for your area and verify current local rules before purchasing plants, using treatments, or installing electrical equipment.
