Transform Your Backyard into a Mental Health Sanctuary

A restorative backyard does not require a major makeover. Start with a comfortable place to sit or a small garden you enjoy, and tailor the space to your needs and upkeep limits.

You can make a backyard feel more restorative without a major renovation: start with one comfortable place to sit, then add nature or gardening details you genuinely enjoy. Gardening and organized outdoor nature activities are associated with better wellbeing and some mental-health outcomes, but a backyard makeover has not been shown to treat or prevent mental illness.

Can a backyard support mental wellbeing?

It can offer an accessible place to spend time outdoors, notice plants, sit quietly, or garden if that appeals to you. Evidence on these activities is encouraging, but it does not establish that a particular backyard feature—or redesign—causes a clinical benefit.

A 2021 systematic review of outdoor nature-based interventions for community adults included 50 studies: 16 randomized controlled trials, 18 controlled studies, and 16 uncontrolled before-and-after studies. In its randomized-trial meta-analysis, interventions favored improvements in depressive mood, anxiety, and affect. The review included activities such as gardening, green exercise, and nature-based therapy; its findings concern those interventions, not backyard renovations specifically. Read the review record on PubMed.

A 2024 umbrella review covering 40 reviews reported a positive effect of gardening and horticultural-therapy activities on wellbeing (effect size 0.55; 95% CI 0.23 to 0.87; p < 0.001). The authors cautioned that substantial variation among the underlying studies limits direct clinical implications. Read the umbrella review on PubMed.

Direct evidence about private yards is more limited. A 2023 study surveyed 2,084 people in Brisbane and Sydney, Australia, in April 2021. More frequent yard use over the first pandemic year was associated with lower stress, depression, and anxiety and higher wellbeing. However, longer yard visits in the week before the survey were associated with higher symptom scores. This observational, pandemic-era finding does not show that yard use caused either outcome, and it may reflect people turning to nearby nature during difficult periods. Read the private-yard study.

How can you make your backyard more relaxing?

Design around what you would actually like to do there, rather than trying to reproduce a prescribed “wellness” garden. The Royal Horticultural Society’s science summary organizes garden benefits around reducing harm, restoring capacities, and building capacities. That is the RHS’s framework, not proof that any one garden element produces a clinical effect. See the RHS science summary.

Make one comfortable place to pause

Choose a spot where you can sit without feeling you must complete a task. Consider shade or shelter, a stable surface, and a seat that works for your body and mobility. A small patio, balcony-adjacent corner, or chair near a planted border can be enough; the available evidence does not establish a minimum yard size or ideal layout.

Add nature in a way you enjoy

Use plants, textures, or other sensory details that feel pleasant to you and suit your climate and available light. If caring for plants feels like a chore, keep the planting simple or leave it out. The evidence does not establish that particular colors, fragrances, water features, or plant varieties have independent mental-health effects.

Make gardening optional and manageable

If you enjoy tending plants, try a small bed or a few containers rather than committing to a large project. Match the amount of planting to the time, energy, budget, and maintenance you can comfortably sustain. Local climate and growing conditions matter when choosing plants; the cited evidence does not provide a universally suitable plant list.

Should you prioritize sitting or gardening?

Neither is a universal winner. Choose based on the activity you are more likely to enjoy and the effort the space can realistically require.

Approach Best fit Maintenance and access Space and cost
Restorative passive use You want a place to sit, look around, or spend time outdoors without a gardening task. A stable, comfortable seat and an easy route to it may be the main priorities. Ongoing upkeep can be modest, depending on surrounding planting. Can work in a small corner. Cost depends on what you already have and whether you add seating, shade, or paving.
Active gardening You find planting or tending enjoyable and want an activity to do outside. Requires ongoing care. Raised or container planting may make access easier for some people, but suitability depends on individual needs. Can start with a few containers or a small patch. Plant choice and upkeep depend on local climate and conditions.

These are practical design tradeoffs, not outcomes proven by head-to-head clinical comparisons. The RHS provides a free digital wellbeing-garden blueprint for home gardens if you want further planning ideas.

How do you create a small backyard sanctuary?

  1. Pick one use. Decide whether you mainly want a place to sit, a small gardening activity, or both.
  2. Choose the easiest workable spot. Consider comfort, access, sunlight, shelter, and how much upkeep you want.
  3. Make one change first. Add a seat, clear a path, or set out a small container garden—whichever removes the biggest barrier to using the space.
  4. Notice how it works for you. If the change makes it more inviting, keep it. If it creates effort or discomfort, simplify or adjust it.

This incremental approach avoids spending on features before you know how you want to use the yard. There is no evidence here for a required budget, number of plants, or amount of time outdoors.

When should a garden not be the only support?

A backyard can complement practices that support wellbeing; it is not a substitute for mental-health care. If symptoms are persistent, severe, or interfering with daily life, consider speaking with a qualified health professional.
