Trane’s product-security index lists a 2023 vulnerability entry for the XL824, XL850, XL1050, and Pivot thermostats under CVE-2023-4212. The index categorizes the weakness as command injection and injection. It does not establish which firmware versions are affected or give enough detail to prescribe a specific fix, so owners should confirm their model and software state with Trane before acting.
What the Trane thermostat advisory says
Trane Technologies’ Product Security page lists an entry for CVE-2023-4212 covering four thermostat model names. The index gives 6 November 2023 as the entry’s last-updated date and associates the issue with CWE-77 (command injection) and CWE-74 (injection). These categories describe the type of weakness; they do not, by themselves, explain how an attacker could reach or exploit a particular device.

The index is not a substitute for the full technical advisory. Trane links the entry to CISA’s ICSA-23-234-02, but the available record does not establish attack preconditions, confirmed exploitation in the wild, or a complete technical account. Those details should not be inferred from the CVE or weakness labels.
Which Trane thermostat models are named?
- XL824
- XL850
- XL1050
- Pivot thermostats
These are the models named in the vendor’s 2023 index entry. The evidence does not identify affected firmware versions, so a model match alone cannot establish whether a particular thermostat is vulnerable or already remediated.

ComfortLink II is a separate, older issue
Trane’s index also lists CVE-2015-2867 for ComfortLink II. A National Vulnerability Database search result describes a design flaw in ComfortLink II SCC firmware 2.0.2 service that could allow remote attackers to take control. This is a historical issue distinct from the 2023 CVE-2023-4212 thermostat entry; it should not be treated as evidence that the two advisories describe the same flaw. The NVD record could not be verified directly for this article, so the brief description is limited to the surfaced result.
How to check your thermostat and get current guidance
The available vendor index does not give a specific firmware check path or update procedure. To determine what applies to your device:
Rank #2
- Touchscreen Thermostat
- Use up to 4 Heat / 2 Cool (Gas, Oil or Electric) / HP / Dual Fuel
- Programmable: 7 day , 5/1/1 day or None
- This is NOT a Plug & Play Replacement , Rewiring / Reconfiguration Required
- MUST INSTALL NEW SUBBASE WHEN REPLACEING TCONT800 Series Thermsotats
- Identify the exact model name shown on the thermostat or its product documentation.
- Check the thermostat’s displayed software or firmware information if available, and note the version rather than assuming that a model match means the device is affected.
- Contact current Trane support or consult a current official advisory. Provide the model and software version and ask whether the CVE-2023-4212 notice applies and what mitigation, if any, is recommended for that device.
- Follow only the vendor’s device-specific instructions. The accessible advisory index does not establish a firmware update, reset, network change, or replacement as the correct remedy.
Trane describes a coordinated disclosure process in which it gives responsible parties time to patch or otherwise remedy a vulnerability before public disclosure and asks for confidentiality during that work. It also says it does not offer monetary compensation for vulnerability submissions. This describes its reporting process, not a consumer fix.

Do not confuse the thermostat entry with Tracer advisories
Trane’s product-security page also lists 2026 advisories for Tracer SC, Tracer SC+, and Tracer Concierge. These are separate building-control products, not the four residential thermostat models named in the 2023 CVE-2023-4212 entry. The Tracer notices should not be used to infer a thermostat’s status.
