A DIY swamp cooler is a small direct evaporative cooler: a fan pushes air through a wet, porous pad, and evaporation removes heat from the moving air. It works best when the incoming air is hot and dry. Because it adds moisture to the room, it also needs an open route for humid air to leave. The concept is straightforward; the cooling you get from a homemade unit depends on local humidity, airflow through the wet pad, and how well the room is ventilated.
How a DIY swamp cooler works
Water evaporating from a surface takes heat from the surrounding air. In a direct evaporative cooler, a fan draws or pushes air through wetted media, then sends the cooled, more humid air into the occupied space. A typical system has a fan or blower, porous media, a water source or reservoir, and sometimes a pump and water-distribution arrangement.

Plan the air path as a continuous route: outdoor air → wet media → fan outlet → occupied area → open window, door, or other exhaust path. The fan must move air through the media rather than around it; gaps at the sides can let most of the air bypass the wet surface.

Look at local outdoor temperature and humidity before building. Dry air has more capacity to absorb water, so it offers more evaporative cooling potential. As the air approaches saturation, evaporation—and the cooling it can provide—approaches zero. At 100% relative humidity, dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures are equal, leaving no wet-bulb depression for evaporative cooling, as explained in the Building America Solution Center’s evaporative-cooling guidance.

Wet-bulb temperature is a useful way to think about the physical limit, not a promise of the outlet temperature from a homemade unit. The guide illustrates the idea with 108°F dry-bulb air and a 70°F wet-bulb temperature, a 38°F wet-bulb depression. That is an example of the air conditions—not a forecast or expected temperature drop for a DIY cooler.
Direct evaporative cooling adds humidity indoors. If the room is sealed, moisture accumulates and comfort and performance can suffer. The Building America Solution Center states: “For the system to work correctly, doors or windows must be opened to provide a path for the air to exit.” Treat that as part of the design: the cooler needs both an air inlet and a place for the air to exhaust.

Plan airflow and choose a realistic scale
Decide whether the goal is to cool a person nearby, a small area, or a larger room. Whole-home sizing guidance is not a specification for an improvised box or a guarantee that a small fan will perform as intended. The Building America Solution Center describes whole-home planning in terms of airflow in cubic feet per minute (CFM) and regional air changes per hour (ACH), with guidance around 20–40 ACH depending on location and conditions. Its formula is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems(space volume in cubic feet × ACH) ÷ 60 = CFM
This is a whole-home planning method, not proof that a fan’s advertised free-air CFM will still pass through a wet pad. Media resistance, enclosure layout, and bypass gaps all affect actual airflow. TeachEngineering offers a classroom simplification of replacing room air about every two minutes; that teaching rule and the whole-home ACH method come from different contexts and should not be treated as interchangeable engineering requirements.

Build around a clear air path and controlled water flow
The available technical guidance supports the system concept, but it does not establish a tested bill of materials, pad dimensions, pump size, wiring layout, or performance result for a homemade cooler. Use the following sequence as a design framework, not as a validated construction plan.
- Choose the scale and check conditions. Decide where the unit will sit, how air will enter and leave, and whether outdoor air is dry enough for evaporative cooling to be useful.
- Make a stable enclosure. Keep the intake, media, and outlet distinct so air has to cross the wetted surface on its way through the unit.
- Select suitable porous media. Wet evaporative media is central to the design. If using an evaporative cooler cooling pad or replacement cooling pad, match its dimensions and airflow requirements to the enclosure and fan; no specific product or model is established for a small homemade build.
- Arrange water distribution. Wet the media evenly using a gravity-fed arrangement or recirculation. A recirculating design commonly uses a pump, but the pump’s required lift and distribution rate depend on the build and are not established here. Arrange flow to keep media wet without spraying droplets into the occupied area.
- Control bypass and leaks. Seal gaps around the media so airflow crosses it. Position the reservoir to reduce spill risk and keep water away from electrical connections.
- Provide an exhaust route. Open a window or door, or otherwise provide a route for humid air to leave the occupied space.
Keep electrical equipment protected from leaks and splashes, select components according to their manufacturer’s ratings and instructions, and do not improvise a mains-wiring plan from general cooler diagrams. A fixed window, wall, or duct installation may trigger local requirements; check with the relevant authority before making a permanent installation. The cited Building America Solution Center guide discusses code considerations, but it does not determine current requirements for every jurisdiction.

Know the difference between a swamp cooler and a mist fan
A conventional direct evaporative cooler evaporates water from media positioned in the airflow path. A mist fan instead sprays liquid droplets into the air. Honeywell describes the media-based arrangement as more suitable for indoor use; that is manufacturer guidance, not independent comparative testing. For this design, avoid spraying droplets into the room and focus on keeping the media wet.

Clean and drain the water system
Keep the reservoir and pan clean, and do not leave stagnant water sitting through long idle periods. The Building America Solution Center advises keeping the reservoir clean and odor-free and draining and cleaning the pan when the unit will be idle for more than a few days, because standing water can support mosquitoes and bacteria, including Legionella. Clean the unit regularly and drain it completely between uses or when putting it into storage. This is general maintenance guidance, not a complete water-treatment protocol.

What a homemade cooler cannot guarantee
No independently verified, named, year-attributed statistic specific to DIY swamp-cooler outcomes is established here. In particular, there is no validated temperature drop, universally appropriate fan or pump size, or universally safe wiring arrangement for a homemade model. Treat the unit as a climate-dependent cooling experiment: results turn on dry outdoor air, airflow through the wet media, water management, and a workable exhaust path.
