To get smoke smell out quickly, stop more smoke from entering, ventilate only when outdoor air is cleaner, and remove residue from surfaces and washable fabrics. Use air filtration and activated charcoal as support—not as substitutes for cleaning. If a fire left visible soot, widespread residue, or damage to building materials, treat it as a restoration job rather than routine housekeeping.
What to do first
- Stop the smoke source. If smoke is still being produced indoors, address the cause safely. During an outdoor wildfire or other smoky-air event, close windows and doors, set HVAC to recirculate, and close the outdoor-air intake if your system allows it.
- Check outdoor air before ventilating. When outdoor air is cleaner and conditions permit, open windows or use fresh-air ventilation to air out the house. Do not draw in smoky air. Check local air-quality information and follow EPA wildfire and indoor-air guidance.
- Clean residue from the places it settled. Damp-wipe or damp-mop suitable hard surfaces, and wash smoke-affected clothing, linens, and washable soft furnishings according to their care labels. Cleaning residue addresses the source of odor; fragrance only covers it.
- Filter the air and add odor absorption. Use filtration suited to particles and, where available, gas-phase odor chemicals. Activated charcoal can be an adjunct after cleaning.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Wildfire Smoke: A Guide for Public Health Officials says, “Removal of smoke odor is difficult, but there are ways to diminish the odor, including beginning with a thorough airing of any structure.” That advice depends on outdoor air being suitable for ventilation.

How to clean smoke residue from rooms, clothes, and furniture
Hard surfaces
Damp-clean suitable floors, counters, walls, and other exposed hard surfaces. For ash or visible soot, avoid dry sweeping, which can put particles back into the air. EPA recommends wet cleaning and using a HEPA-filter vacuum where vacuuming is appropriate. Follow product and surface-care directions; there is no single cleaner or mixture that is suitable for every finish.

Wash affected clothing, linens, and washable soft furnishings according to their care labels. Some absorbent materials may hold odor after washing. Foam, feather-filled items, upholstery, and building materials may need specialist cleaning or replacement; a wash is not guaranteed to remove odor from every material. Will an air purifier remove smoke smell?
A purifier can help, but its filter type matters. A HEPA or other high-efficiency mechanical filter captures particles; it does not, by itself, remove all gaseous chemicals that contribute to odor. A portable cleaner with activated-charcoal media may help with odor gases, but its capacity is limited and the media may need frequent replacement as it saturates. Filtration reduces airborne material; it does not clean soot embedded on surfaces or in fabrics.
Choose a portable cleaner for the room
EPA’s current cleaner-air-room guidance recommends a smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. For example, a 150-square-foot room calls for a smoke CADR of at least 100. This is a sizing recommendation for a cleaner-air room, not a promise that odor will disappear. Check the cleaner’s filter specifications, gas-phase media, replacement needs, and operating noise at the speed you will use. Read EPA’s cleaner-air room guidance.

Check HVAC filter compatibility
A compatible MERV 13-or-higher HVAC filter is another option for particle control. Confirm that your system can handle the filter without unacceptable airflow restriction; MERV rating alone does not establish compatibility. EPA discusses HVAC and portable filtration in its indoor air filtration guidance.

They can be a supporting odor absorber, not a cleanup method. FEMA’s homeowner guide recommends: “Place activated charcoal bags or containers throughout the home to absorb smoke odors.” Use them after removing residue and follow the product’s directions for placement and quantity. Charcoal bags do not remove soot from surfaces or replace washing affected materials.

What not to use as a quick fix
- Do not rely on fragrance. Scented products may mask odor but do not remove smoke residue; FEMA cautions against odor-masking products in its homeowner guide.
- Do not use an ozone generator in an occupied home to remove smoke odor. EPA says ozone at concentrations within public-health standards is not effective against many odor-causing chemicals; generators can reach harmful concentrations, and ozone reactions can create harmful byproducts. EPA’s wildfire public-health guide does not recommend ozone generators for smoke-odor remediation. See EPA’s ozone generator guidance.
- Do not assume odor is a pollution test. A reduction in smell does not prove that a home is free of smoke pollutants.
When smoke damage needs professional restoration
For a small cooking incident or limited smoke intrusion, source control, suitable cleaning, and filtration may be enough. A fire that leaves visible soot, broad residue, or damage to porous building materials is different: residue can extend beyond what household cleaning reaches, and cleanup may require protective equipment and specialized methods. FEMA’s homeowner guide describes PPE for moderate smoke, soot, and ash cleanup. Coordinate with your insurer and seek a qualified restoration provider for significant residue, damaged porous materials, or odor that persists after cleaning.
Do not order duct cleaning automatically. EPA says it is warranted when there is a reason, such as excessive debris or particles actually being released from registers. Follow EPA’s wildfire cleanup guidance and the FEMA guide when assessing post-fire cleanup.

Why smoke odor can linger
Smoke involves both particles and gases. During wildfire smoke events, indoor PM2.5 levels are generally around 55% to 60% of outdoor levels when doors and windows are closed and portable air cleaners are not in use, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2022. That figure describes particle exposure in the stated conditions; it is not the percentage of odor removed or a prediction for an individual home. Smoke odor can also remain in deposited residue and absorbent materials, so airing alone or running a particle filter may not resolve it.

The strongest cleanup guidance here concerns wildfire smoke and post-fire ash or soot. Cooking and tobacco smoke also involve particles and gases, but cleaning requirements vary with the source, how much smoke was produced, and the materials affected.
